I’m joining my fellow Council colleagues in expressing my concern with this ad and the messaging it conveys. I’m pretty sure the data will show that many (if not most) pedestrian injuries happen at intersections and on crosswalks.
We continually frame road violence as an outcome of personal choices yet we all know very well it's the result of our cities choices.

I don't believe the QED was designed or ever intended as a route for "the flow of trade and transport". It's designed as a scenic route. As we debate this issue, let's not muddy the waters by positioning the QED as something other than what it is.
Agree with you Walter, the NCC is unelected and unaccountable and although there is a place for them on public lands and preserving historic places, for its bureaucrats to stop the flow of trade and transport in this and other parts of Ottawa is unacceptable.

I support the Vacant Unit Tax. 99% of eligible homeowners submitted their declarations, and 95% of those did so without the need for assistance. The high number of reported vacancies (either declared or deemed vacant) shows that Ottawa has a problem.
An Ottawa city councillor is looking to axe the city's new vacant unit tax this week, suggesting the administration of the new levy is "an unparalleled annual bureaucratic burden" on households.

But all of that kindness didn't prepare me for what I saw as I walked off on my own through the so-called "red zone". There's no question. The City of Ottawa is under an occupation. And the occupiers are completely dug-in. 3/
One year ago, Ottawa experiences historic rainfall, overwhelming our stormwater management capacity, crippling infrastructure & causing unprecedented damage. Earlier this summer, same in Toronto. Today, same in Montreal. The future we need to prepare for is here.

Canada is abandoning its commitment to human rights for the sake of a few Canadian mining companies and their investors. Parliament needs someone who will stand up and demand that Canada cease its support to Ethiopia under these conditions. If not, then we are complicit.
For those who suggest that bike lanes are enough, watch this video and see why painted lanes are not enough. Cyclists needs separated lanes with physical barriers to protect against cars.

A resident came back from Edmonton and sent me this photo of a segregated bike lane that looks quite effective and practical. They did this in Edmonton. Which has winter. And the world has not collapsed and the cars are still free to roam. Let's get these here in
#OttCity
!
As I stated in my mission, my focus is to help our city grow sustainably. We simply cannot do that through the continuation of car-centric suburban sprawl. And no, I'm not waging a "war on cars"; I'm simply looking to defend my city against the war that cars have waged on us. 1/
Today is when I learned the true meaning of the word "impunity". I even heard this from a trio of protesters, as I walked behind them. "We just got here, but I was talking to someone who's been here since it started and none of us have been towed." 8/
This is how you do it. As they do in Montreal, roads can be shared by cars and cyclists. We just need to invest in the right designs. Ottawa can embrace this kind of change, for the benefit of all.
#OttCity
PS: Montreal has winter.
Montreal is testing out an innovative way of clearing snow from cycle paths, where the popularity of winter cycling increases year after year. Rather than plowing and spreading granular salt, they pass a sweeper and then spray brine. Seems to work better!
To illustrate the frustration over not approving this development (80+ affordable housing units!): here's a map of the walking distance from the site property to the nearby Farm Boy. 14 minutes. Transit, schools, shopping: all close by. This does not need a 1-to-1 parking ratio.
Once again, Ottawa can’t grasp the forward-thinking vision of other cities. In Kitchener Waterloo, by adding service hours, they saw a predictable growth in ridership. Here in
#OttCity
, we get the double-speak of “less bus routes will make the system more reliable.”
That reason should now become far clearer to many, thanks to a
@globeandmail
expose on the influence that Canadian mining companies with investments in Ethiopia are having on
@JustinTrudeau
and our Canadian gov't. 3/
Kent Street from Somerset to Wellington, for all intents and purposes, is a logistics-and-refueling depot. Dozens and dozens of trucks. Work crews going in and out with fuel carts, with the kind of ease that suggests it's their 30th trip of the day. Barely a cop in sight. 4/
And it's because of truly loving, brave civic leaders like those three that we'll get through this crisis, with help from wonderful brains like my walking-buddy

After grocery shopping my neighbours were chatting about going to Gatineau for their BBQ Booze.
Here are some Ottawa options for beer, wine and spirits to keep it in province.
I am eager to support these kinds of conversations: where we look at the real cost of suburban development. And this is only looking at it from the lens of REVENUE per acre. What about COST of servicing per acre? From a fiscal lens, we need a re-think.
This single apartment building on just 1.6 acres of land in Centretown brings in more property tax revenue than this entire 36.3 acre subdivision in Barrhaven. More than 50X the property tax revenue per acre.
Same scale:
This is an effective visual that helps everyone (cyclists, pedestrians and drivers) to see just how easy it is to make significant improvements to public space FOR ALL that still provide space for cars.
#OttCity
One of the most simple and powerful city-building projects your city could do would be to transform its street intersections to prioritize people and life over cars and speed. We know how. It just takes will. Graphic via the always clever
@LiorSteinberg

I'm just going to keep on putting the positive messages out there. Making certain streets car-free is not only great for local residents, but it's also great for small businesses.
I’m grateful that the NCC is making these investments in augmenting Ottawa’s public realm. The city can do this as well, but we have to be willing to see it as a worthwhile investment, which I think it is.

Ottawa isn't the only city faced with fiscal challenges to public transit & diminished ridership. How will increasing fares (and likely driving more customers away) help us in the long run? How will that grow the ridership? Toronto is taking a different approach: investing.
As a transit rider, I know how frustrating it is to deal with long wait times and delays.
Today, I’m proud to announce TTC services will increase starting in September and return to 95% of pre-pandemic service hours by mid-fall.

Once again Ottawa, if other cities can do this - like Montreal and NYC - can we give it a try? We can launch a pilot project for Summer 2024 to pedestrianize specific areas like Downtown, Glebe, Kitchissippi. Businesses would benefit from this, as would local residents.
Don't know how many different ways I can articulate this, but

households are already accomplishing this. The fact that there's resistance should not deter us from doing what's best for the future of our city.
For many Ottawa residents, bike lanes ARE going to get them to work, to school, to the store, to church, to the pool, to see their grandparents, to get exercise, to see the city’s beauty without rushing past it, and to do all that safely. Don’t they matter just as much?
#OttCity
Add to that a quarter of a billion dollars on bike lanes.
Ottawa needs transportation priorities that work for them. Whether your getting groceries, taking your kids to school, getting to the community centre for hockey practice.
Bike lanes aren't going to help you with that.
This shortsighted policy will fuel the vicious circle of poor service - low ridership. Using public transit should be second nature for us - not a frustrating last-resort option.

Hey

, let’s start by being open-minded and assume that car-free streets can be good for people AND for business. So please suggest some streets where you think this could work. Bank? Somerset? Wellington West? Let’s just try a pilot project.
It's hard to describe the startling QUIET of these open streets. Hundreds of people out, and all you hear are birds singing, the click of a bike mechanism, and the murmur of conversation. Cities aren't loud, cars are loud.
