Municipal issues, data, transportation, history, yelling at drivers. Serious ideas, unserious person. Lots of original content. Pretend journalist. π²πΆπ³
In 2009, a small change to the way Ottawa collects Development Charges resulted in a very significant subsidy on sprawl. This change was made by city staff, against the direction of council, buried in a 450 page background study, and nobody on council seems to have noticed.π§΅
Drivers keep crashing into this hazard sign at Kent and Catherine.
Each time I go by I see it bent over, straightened back out, bent over again, missing, replaced, over and over.
Somebody crashed into it again last night. Look how many times the city has had to replace it.
8 minutes later, this lady had zig-zagged around the one-way streets and found me, stopped in the middle of Gladstone Ave. "DID YOU JUST TAKE A PICTURE OF MY LICENSE PLATE?" - "Yeah." - "I WAS PICKING UP A SUN CHAIR!" - "You were parked in the bike lane. "
She was panicking lol.
"Jeez, traffic is terrible! It's those damn bike lanes I tell ya! If we just get rid of the bike lanes, which yeah okay, this road doesn't happen to have, but I know somehow it's those damn bikes fault! Look there goes one now! WAIT IN TRAFFIC LIKE THE REST OF US!"
This City of Ottawa employee close-passed me, in a school zone, in an intersection, with oncoming traffic, after rolling though the stop sign.
@ottawacity
, could you make sure your employees know how to drive before handing them the keys?

Remember when Brian Mulroney sold off all our shit for a quick buck?
He privatized 23 out of 61 crown corporations including Air Canada, Petro Canada, and Connaught Laboratories, among many others.
On the way to work this morning, 30km/h street, bicycle-route, single-file, stop sign every block.
Of course some morons in a pickup truck need to race up next to me to yell at me to move to the right side of the road and tell me that I'm "not a car". It's exhausting.
This single apartment building on just 1.6 acres of land in Centretown brings in more property tax revenue than this entire 36.3 acre subdivision in Barrhaven. More than 50X the property tax revenue per acre.
Same scale:
@garymallcop
She drove 5 blocks to yell at me, my wife and toddler because I took a picture of her illegal parking job as we walked past... Who's harassing who?
What a clown show.
But great demonstration of how easy it is for them to just "wait 'till it's safe to cross" and carry their things across the street without needing to block the bike lane.
This half acre of mixed-use, low-rise buildings in Centretown provides to the city nearly 4X the property tax revenue of this half acre of McMansions in Kanata with in-ground swimming pools, backing onto a golf course.
This guy came speeding up behind me, seemingly got angry with me taking the lane (I'm going 33 in a 30 zone), then used his vehicle to try to force me to over to the side of the road. I kicked his van.
He gets out, grabs my bike, starts poking me in the chest and threatens me...
I hope this looms in the back of her mind for weeks. Thinking that at some moment she's going to get a ticket in the mail or something. Unfortunately not something I can do.
This tiny little cluster of buildings on just 0.88 acres of land in Centretown brings in more property tax revenue than this 9.24 acre Walmart Supercentre in Barrhaven.

I'm excited to announce that Percy Street is now exclusively open to active transportation!
Under the Mayor's new "use it or lose it" bylaw, no cars used the street for two and a half minutes, therefore they lose it!
A bold step towards a greener future from Mayor Sutcliffe.
New data shows that very few cyclists and pedestrians are using Queen Elizabeth Driveway when it's closed to cars. Watch this video as a great example. When I recorded it yesterday afternoon, not a single pedestrian or cyclist passed me for the entire two and a half minutes.
@kubectlget
Did it occur to you that they could pass me later, when the speed limit changes, instead of breaking the law to do it dangerously in a 30km/h zone?
Reporting live from the Queen Elizabeth Driveway, I've been out here for over two and a half minutes this afternoon and I haven't seen one cyclist using the road.

The 'nightmare' of single family homes being replaced by 'out of character' multi-unit buildings is already reality. This cute little single family home was demolished for a giant, ugly, multi-unit... no wait it's a single family home. too. Nothing to see here!
Friendly reminder that βneighbourhood characterβ is mainly used as a complaint to keep poorer people out of neighbourhoods.
βNeighbourhood characterβ almost never stops new mansions from being built.
In 2009, 5 cyclists were run down by a driver on March Road in Kanata. This incident sparked a debate in the city about cycling safety.
@_MarkSutcliffe
, then a columnist, weighed in saying that this was not an issue of cycling safety as that road was "unambiguously safe". π§΅1/4
Itβs crazy how often I hear people complain that cyclists donβt stop at stop signs, often with the subtext that cyclists donβt deserve bike infrastructure.
Do they really not realize that drivers roll through stop signs all the time too? Do people just not notice that?
Far too many drivers with obstructed plates in Ottawa. How much are these drivers racking up in red light and speed camera fines that the city cannot collect?
This cover is obviously being used to block enforcement cameras that photograph at an angle.
When this guy unhitched his trailer on the cycle-track I knew he was planning to park there all day. It only took
@OttawaBylaw
15 minutes to show up π but then they didn't actually issue a ticket.π
Something I see far too often from Bylaw.
@OttSensNetwork
It's a 30km/h road, I'm going over 30km/h. If I were driving the same speed in a car in the middle of the lane, would they pass me? No.
I needed to make a left turn ahead and I can't do that if I've got a bunch of idiots passing me at twice the speed limit. Give cyclists space.
@KevinVuongMP
@FrostGroup1
@oliviachow
@ausmalik
Now he's "shooting up"? I thought he was "smoking crack"? You know those are different things, right?
Anyway, looks to me like he's smoking weed from a bong, not smoking crack or shooting up. That's definitely not a crack pipe.
So, I'm waiting at the light. A police car pulls up beside me. The light changes, a car runs the red light, and two cars are blocking the intersection. I think, oh here we go! These people are about to get ticketed! But no, the cop just goes around and DRIVES UP THE BIKE LANE!
The light was green for a solid 20 seconds before this guy noticed.
Sitting in his massive 3 ton SUV, staring at his phone, completely oblivious to the world around him.
Can't wait to hear what I was doing wrong here and how the driver that didn't stop at the stop sign and didn't yield the right of way is actually the victim.
Dear idiot drivers,
If you blow right past the stop line and into the crosswalk, you're eventually going to hit somebody walking in the crosswalk. Stop BEHIND the stop line, and THEN proceed if it's clear.
@SleepwellPM
this means you.
@CharlesBodi
Who am I impeding? I'm going the speed limit, there's a stop sign in 20 feet. This is a single file street. That's just called traffic, bud.
I always thought cyclists got a bad reputation for NOT following traffic laws. Now it's for FOLLOWING traffic laws? Can't win eh?
Everyday, drivers are speeding past me in this 30km/h zone, right into a traffic jam. I'm going over 30km/h.
I said to the guy "what's the point?" and he just gave me a great big shoulder shrug.

Does "growth pays for growth" mean that new suburban developments pay for all the roads they require?
No. Whether it's a detached home in Barrhaven or an apartment in Centretown with no parking, both will end up paying for these new suburban roads.π§΅
There's this common misconception that the high property taxs generated by dense developments will go towards improving the surrounding neighborhood. This is clearly not the case, and that needs to change.π§΅
And here is that same road today. The city has added a second line of paint - that oughta do it. "Unambiguously safe." I would feel confident allowing my kid to bike on this road now. /s
This is what the mayor considers safe cycling infrastructure. 4/4
@DufresneTalks
What's wrong with "You appear to be parked in the bike lane" - "Park in the parking spot"?
Did I roll up, call him a dickhead and smash his mirror? You're acting like that's what I did.
If somebody's going to fight me for politely informing them that they're illegally parked π€·
How many streets in Somerset Ward do we need to dedicate to suburban residents driving through our neighbourhood before it's "balanced"?
For the ward with the lowest car ownership - where the majority of residents walk or bike to work, there sure are a lot of arterial roads, no?
Getting around safely and effectively in Ottawa requires a balance of transportation. Thank you for your common sense
@_MarkSutcliffe
as suburban residents just want to be able to get to and from work on time. Open the qed for cars and letβs continue improving cycling elsewhere
The 417 is closed, so there's more traffic than usual, but he does this all the time regardless of traffic, just to save a minute going around the block to get home.
He sat in his car for 14 minutes before getting out.
Sorry about the shaky video, I'm holding a baby.
@hannahmartinn
Dude yelled "What's your fucking problem?" "Shut the fuck up." From his car, in front of his family, but is super concerned about how me giving him the finger makes him look. No concern how dad making multiple traffic violations and getting out of the car to yell at a guy looks.
@Twasnow
Imagine taking 3 seconds to wait behind someone on a bicycle on a single file street. Imagine getting upset encountering someone on a bicycle on a Bicycle Route. Imagine driving your truck on a Bicycle Route and thinking you have more of a right to the street than anyone else.
Happened just this morning, I've got the baby on the front seat, guy driving a huge truck rolls right through the red light ahead of us. He wasn't even looking until I yelled and got his attention. (sound on for yelling)
Bay & Gladstone.

There simply isn't enough revenue from property taxes to maintain all of Ottawa's roads. In 2017 council acknowledged this and voted to prioritize Arterial and Collector roads over Local roads. π§΅
This is one of those "priority" Arterial Roads:
Hard to believe, but Somerset Ward brings in 5X the tax revenue per kilometre of road than the ward average.
Where do you think all the money is going?
I'm seeing two thing in the news today.
1. Police officers couldn't wear their uniforms at a school.
2. An 8 year old girl was run over and killed at school.
Guess which story the police association is calling heartbreaking?
Guess which the Premier calls a disturbing tend?
Obviously I don't have a car, or I can't afford a car, or I have a DUI and lost my license. It couldn't possibly be that I CHOOSE to commute by bicycle because it's far more enjoyable and, for me anyway, actually faster than driving. Right?
@_MarkSutcliffe
The federal government hasn't been "underpaying its property taxes" - they don't pay property taxes.
There is no "unpaid bill".
If you need to misrepresent things to make your case, you don't have a very good argument.
I saw an item on the agenda for the upcoming environment committee "to undertake a tree equity analysis" and "use the results of the tree equity analysis in the prioritization of tree planting".
...so I did it myself.
@ottawacity
this is where you should plant the trees. Go.
From this morning. I signaled and everything. Is this so difficult?
On the plus side, the season for rolled down windows is the season for yelling at bad drivers.
This guy obviously thinks he can do whatever he wants, the rules don't apply to him because he has an important job.
And then the craziest thing happened...
@kels_ID
@ottawacity
So you see what the road looks like to my right? Do you think it's safe to pass me in a school zone when I'm going the speed limit? That should answer your question.
Took the left lane position to be visible to oncoming left-turning vehicles, but no longer visible to right-turning cross-traffic. Tricky situation, easy solution,

Youβre not going to take your kid to a splash pad in February either, should we not build splash pads?
Youβre not going to take your kid to skate on the canal in June, should we pave the canal so people can drive on it?
Seriously, what is your issue with bike infrastructure?
