What if, hear me out, this was people having fun in a park, having pizza? And is a call to action for better waste collection (and recycling) and, while we’re at it, washrooms and drinking fountains.
Here’s the deal
@LoblawsON
; no idea if you got a building permit for this or not, nor how it was reviewed and approved if so. But here’s my unofficial take: see that exit sign? If it’s dark, lights are out, room getting smoky, seeing that sign would save my life. 1/
What if (hear me out) this was a sign that ppl wanted to use the space and we need to step up services like waste pick up, provide washrooms, public amenities and services. Be the city we aspire to.
Hey
@JimWatsonOttawa
if we’re providing toilets for this group of protesters, how come we can’t also provide them for the people who live here?
@GottaGoCampaign
Here, I added a green line to show where it is. So maybe
@LoblawsON
this is fine, maybe it’s got a permit and it meets code requirements for exit, access to exit etc. Who am I to know what process you go thru to do construction in your stores. But it feels wrong to me.
But if I ran for the sign, I’d have a hard time, in a panicked state, finding the gap in the barrier, especially now that you’ve lined it with plexiglass. How easily could you find the le gate (circled in green)? 2/
#BREAKING
Police called in to manage the crowd at the York Catholic District School Board meeting. The topic of raising the Pride flag at YCDSB schools this June sparked this scene. The man at the beginning who you are seeing get swarmed was there to support raising the flag.
Another perspective: you see the exit sign? Head for the barrier and run into it. How are you to know the gate is 50ft to the left? Can you even see the barrier? 3/
Rideau Street was the subject of millions of dollars and investment as part of the LRT; note the lack of trees, benches, places to sit; how do we attract people, residence and tourists, when the built environment is in hospitable or even hostile?
It’s pretty disingenuous to suggest that rural residents (13% of pop, 11% of tax revenue) need to be heard when urban (majority of pop/rev) is routinely ignored when it comes to how decisions are made on things like transit, social/public infrastructure, etc. 1/
I want to make sure that rural residents feel included in the decisions we make as a city. You should not feel like people in downtown Ottawa are deciding how you should operate your farms or live your lives or that your unique needs are being overlooked.

Dear Martha; we have fought bravely at the battle of Billings bridge; while we have lost the Harvey’s, a McDonalds remains. The truck bros have been stopped and we persevere. We are inspired by the warm hearts of our leaders, and seek solace in rousing music. Farewell.
A long piece from me will come out but (TLDR) thread is that this is nonsense. This was a predictable hole in the budget that, thru a series of poor choices, we’re now saddled with and asking, petulantly, be be bailed out. 1/
I'm grateful for my working relationship with Minister Sudds and all Ottawa-area MPs. We're also thankful for the two areas of funding the federal government has provided to Ottawa this year, for affordable housing and new arrivals. However, neither that funding nor the
Thousands of hooligans descend on ottawa, desecrate tomb of unknown soldier and memorial to terry fox; create chaos in rideau centre and on streets while displaying fascist/racist ideology. There, fixed it.
Ottawa planning staff asked me to make a building (new, 6 st) more grey and beige, less colour so it fits with the rest of the neighborhood (mostly 1 st 1930-50s commerical); is this the city we want? One designed by/to meet planning staff or one ppl like and want?
I’m also incredibly angry. I’m angry at the silence from leaders; I’m angry that our mayor has done so little. I’m angry that we’re allowing giant trucks to take over our streets drive and park illegally and intimidate people.
Today, I met Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet, who was born in Ottawa during WWII. It was her birth that started the special relationship between 🇨🇦 and the 🇳🇱. To commemorate her history, I propose renaming Fairmont Park after her:

Actually, the people were probably having a good time, saw a trash can and put their waste in it; we don’t make people take their coffee cups home when they get coffee to go. This is a poorly thought tweet, and a sign we need better park waste collection.
The conservatives are willing to renovate Staples stores and Walmarts but meanwhile we have tens of billions of dollars in backlogged school repairs.
@alexbozikovic
Doug Ford is more interested in renovating American-owned corporations like Staples and Walmart rather than addressing the unprecedented long wait times in Ontario’s ERs. We have tax-paying patients lying on the floor in hospital hallways for 32 hours+ as a result of the dire
Short thread, a counterpoint: we don’t need a $900k study to tell us that free transit is better; it’s possible & creates a positive social outcome; it’s a balance to road/car subsidies and makes sense if we want to be the bold leaders we think we are; 1/
We don't need to spend $900k on a consultant's study to tell us what every taxpayer already knows: we can't afford to make transit free.
Let's work together to fix light rail and improve bus service.
It’s funny how we design the road to be clear and concentrate the water right at the pedestrian crossing. (By funny I mean goddam pathetic).

This has been bothering me. It means a lot to me, as an immigrant to Canada, it stands for much that I hold dear. Really struggling with this.
We’ve earmarked nearly a billion dollars in suburban road and road widening projects; we’ve committed half a billion dollars (and growing) to Lansdowne; we’ve cut transit service and reliability to point where fewer ppl use it bc it’s expensive and untrustworthy.
It's time for the federal and provincial governments to recognize the scope of the crisis in our city. And to recognize that we didn’t create this mess. It's time for Ottawa to get our fair share. Please sign my petition and add your voice to the fight for fairness:
Counterpoint; roads and parking aren’t free either. Yet users aren’t charged for the use of the road and city vastly undercharges cost of parking, while offering free parking as incentive to drive downtown. We also build park and rides and let people use them for free.
Now is not the time to put more financial pressure on Ottawa families.
The price of everything keeps rising and yesterday the Bank of Canada raised interest rates by a full point.

Actually, city council has not. Council, as a body, has been complicit in underfunding investment, approving too-low property tax increases and approving unsustainable projects like Tewin and Lansdowne. While there are a handful to vote against, as a body, council is complicit 1/

Apparently there’s a new story coming up at 8:30 about the flight of downtown parking lot owners and have they struggled and are hoping for a resurgence and people coming back to work is their livelihood depends on it. And not on the onion.
I don’t need direct flights to London; what I need is for our city to be the sort of place that makes tourists want to come here: set aside federal investments (museums, canal, etc) what does the city do to make an attractive offer?
Do you want more direct flights from Ottawa to London and other cities? The more people who support this campaign, the more we will show the airlines that Ottawa wants and deserves more direct flights :
For 2 ½ minutes I watched and there wasn’t a single car on this highway. Clearly, the answer is to remove it and turn this space back over to the people of ottawa.
There are many things that keep Ottawa from being the city it aspires to be. Yes, money is part of that and we have ourselves (city council) to look at: $600m for Tewin subdivision, against all good planning rationale; 1/
If Ottawa is going to be a city in accordance with its national significance, it needs real dollars, and the feds should pony up.
Si Ottawa veut devenir une ville à la hauteur de son importance nationale, elle a besoin d'argent et les autorités fédérales devraient y contribuer.

Question for the universe: building codes require washrooms for buildings; construction sites require porta potties (yes, I know, over min size/type etc). So why don’t we require public washrooms in parks? Or within communities as a basis of density?
@GottaGoCampaign
It’s astonishing that the ON gov would care so little about internationally recognized public space/buildings/parks that it would choose to willfully underfund, undermine and ultimately destroy such works in name of profit and secret deals.

We are a deeply unserious city. We could design for the weather, design for maintenance, design for the winter city we profess to be. This is a sad excuse for cheapness of design; cheapness of utility, cheapness of procurement.
We received some questions about the Chief William Commanda Bridge closing for the winter.

If your 18 wheeler transport truck has to make a right turn from the left lane and still can’t get through the corner without having wheels on the sidewalk maybe it’s the wrong size vehicle for an urban traditional Main Street?

Bc of poor planning, instead of a close walk from the nearby station, ppl are expected to walk 1km or more (uphill on way back) crossing several +4 lane roads: few/no benches along way; no washrooms, no spots to rest/do anything along journey. This is result of poor procurement

The ByWard investment is in more police; most of the $ is in roads; nothing for transit (unless feds cough up $ for kanata north); reserves are being depleted bc of austerity budgets; festivals are being defunded bc we can’t be bothered to want nice things. This isn’t progress.
