The last person to have been demobbed from National Service in 1963 would be at least 89 years old today. "Old people wanting young people to be forced to do unpleasant things that they didn't have to" is maybe the perfect metaphor for the United Kingdom just now.

My grandfather believed his entire life that his father, who he never met, had died at Passchendale in 1916, but at the centenary we couldn't find his name in the Commonwealth war graves list. But we found it on a manifest of a ship sailing to New York.

This must be one of the worst days of Theresa May's life, but it's important that she, and we, remember, that she's built her entire political career on fuelling racism and resentment of the less fortunate, and absolutely deserves this.

The current population of Germany is 83 million, of whom it's estimated that 17 million live in relative poverty. Given that those figures are actually WORSE, and support his claim MORE, I'm left wondering why Neil has chosen to use the incorrect numbers "14" and "88."

50 years ago today, the Parachute Regiment opened fire on an anti-Internment march in Derry, killing 13 people that day, with 1 more dying later from his wounds. No-one has ever faced, and likely no-one will ever face, justice for these murders. Love to my city, today and always.

Dammit. 1963 is SIXTY years ago, not seventy, so the youngest person who could possibly have done compulsory national service is 79, not 89. Over-79s do not constitute the majority of pensioners though, so the essential point still stands.

@InternetHippo I think Ricky is confusing "offended" and "bored" again.

Didn't play the cello. Played the viola. Typical Fake News from the leftist media.

This Father's Day, due to popular demand, I've returned with more stories about my irrepressible, inscrutable dad. It's a brief little tale I've never told before, concerning this one time he lifted a car.

"My industry have acted as stenographers to the incompetent Government whose inconsistent messaging has led to its advice being ignored. Now it's vital that we pivot to blaming the public when the consequences are clear. Please buy a paper. Something something cup of coffee."

Today I am scared. I am worried that we are complaining and condemning ourselves into a possible second wave. While people were observing lockdown (or the essence of it) and the message was blunt, we managed at huge cost to get the infection rate down. I fear us losing this.

@clairepvarley @SallyVanns The big problem is that, like Japanese or Korean, fridge is a tonal language. So "Dukduk" can mean one of several things, depending on pitch.

@EoinKeary @lilbuddymax 1) I think you mean "we don't all like potatoes," meaning "some of us don't like potatoes," rather than "we all don't like potatoes," meaning "none of us like potatoes." 2) In any case, I think we MIGHT all like potatoes. Potatoes are great.

@hughcooneys The Bus Bully (who later mellowed and became a surprisingly good friend) doing a perfect 'dustman's blow' and firing a bogey direct from his nose out the window into the open mouth of a boy from The Protestant School who was waiting at the stop for another bus.

@KiraArghy Similarly, when applying for a visa to go to a foreign country, answering "NOT TERRORISM" in the bit of the form asking the purpose of your visit means you end up being asked a lot of questions that you've already answered with "NOT TERRORISM."

@shockproofbeats @Matt_Muir I'm now imagining former Crystal Palace, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, West Ham, Man City, QPR, Bordeaux and England Striker Clive Allen as a poet, literary critic and broadcaster. I think he could handle it. I look forward to his latest slim volume of verse.
