grassroots mutual aid effort dedicated to providing the community with high-quality respirators! DM for free KN95s and N95s! 😷😷😷😷 fill out the form below!
eleven western US mask blocs and mutual aid groups are fundraising to buy a WHOLE BUNCH of 3M KN95s for their communities :+)
can you pitch in or share?
They made the bill even worse!!!
It makes only certain mask types "legal" and it remains illegal to wear a mask for general respiratory protection. Even worse, they deputize the public to force mask wearers remove their masks for the sake of "identification"
This is horrendous!!
❗️Ok, folks: the North Carolina Senate has finally chosen conference committee members to hash out their final *mask ban bill* language w/ House members. Time to call & email - tell them to keep masking in public spaces legal.

The NC Senate Judiciary have passed HB237 NC mask ban with amendment making it illegal to wear a mask for health and safety reasons. Next it goes to Senate Rules
There are mask bans in ~20 states (*cough* legal commentators can you stop ignoring this and get us updates??) and they've been used as an excuse to arrest antifascists, environmentalists, anti-war protestors for a long time.
Why it's even more important that our community wears masks. Show solidarity!!
Help us get these out into the community by sharing our info so people can request masks.
Senator Buck Newton is proposing the "Unmasking Mobs and Criminals" bill. It would repeal the health and safety exemption for wearing masks. He told reporters this is in response to people wearing masks to conceal their identities.
To be clear this bill is a blatant effort to give cover for law enforcement to further target vulnerable and progressive BIPOC in North Carolina, by detaining and arresting them based on appearance.
Not a lawyer or legal scholar.. but HB237 officially putting law enforcement into the hands of the general public seems like it's meant to encourage violence and vigilantism against mask wearers!
Fascistic trash: "a person wearing a mask...shall remove the mask upon request by a law enforcement officer or temporarily remove the mask upon request by the owner or occupant of public or private property...to allow for identification of the wearer."
This article reports what we already know—that HB237 will be picked up next week when the House is in session again. It's helpful to know it's going to House Rules, likely Tuesday.
Plus speculation that the house may reject the senate changes 🤞
This and: wear a mask, ask others to wear a mask, hand out masks, share masked selfies, defeat the notion that masks are unpopular or non-essential.
Protect ourselves by normalizing mask wearing!
Mask bans are spreading faster than COVID
LA Mayor
@KarenBassLA
wants to ban masks at protests rather than do anything effective
Please do the following and stay posted for more actions:
1. Call the mayors office and demand no mask restrictions: 213-978-0600
🧵
The house adjourned until May 20! Keep sharing how this will affect you.
More importantly there is time to help increase the number of people masking in our communities and create visible pressure!
And please follow us to help build the community response!!
NEW: House and Senate Republican conferees have agreed on a compromise mask bill that satisfies concerns about health masking, and the conference report is ready to move forward, beginning with a vote on the House floor this morning.

We have distributed tens (hundreds?) of thousands of masks & have even more to share. We need people to act as hubs for mask distribution, to help deliver masks, & even start their own mask blocs!! People want to mask & making sure there is a community of maskers keeps us safer.
In addition - we need to talk about ways to support people in the state of North Carolina. I see a lot of talks about restricting travel & tourism and I agree that’s a great way to send an economic message. But there are people living there who need help right away. /10
HB237 is as far as we know, the first ban directly criminalizing people trying to prevent COVID by masking. It's an explicit ban on high filtration masks like kn95 & n95 rather than the previous general interpretation of our current & past NC mask ban to mean ski-mask/bandana etc
We need some orgs with resources to actually message on what HB237 does. Whether or not it passes with the amendments people will get arrested for masking and need to be prepared.
As it stands people will get felonies and misdemeanors for masking!

@hankgreen
If folks need help getting masks reach out to a local mask bloc! We give them out for free!
To find your nearest bloc ask us, search mask bloc here, or check out resources like
We and other mask blocs are here to try to fill the gap when employers don't provide adequate PPE.
@MaskBlocDFW
and @/757masks in southeast VA are also gearing up to provide high quality masks to farmworkers. Please share this resource!
Infections in dairy workers are likely going uncounted.
Farm workers, especially dairy workers urgently need:
-Practical PPE, and training on proper use
-Paid sick leave
-Widespread testing and treatment
I hope everyone who liked this knows there’s something everyone can do to make progress on getting rid of it, starting with wearing a high-quality mask whenever you’re in public (ESPECIALLY this week)
The house adjourned until May 20! There is time to blast your representatives with messages about how this will affect you.
More importantly there is time to help increase the number of people masking in our communities and create visible pressure!
And please follow us!!
Despite this!!
We have worked tirelessly to keep each other safe & will continue to do so. Many of us are criminalized already via poverty, gender, reproduction, race, labor, etc.
Being targeted by health status just brings us all closer in solidarity & strength.
@victoriacoble15
No idea! But ACLU is a good place to ask.
The advice now is keep calling Buck Newton and share how this puts you and your vulnerable loved ones at risk. I hate that we have to appeal to someone who would introduce such a cruel piece of legislation in the first place though
These anti-mask laws have always been used as a probable cause loophole but it was fairly rare compared to other ways of targeting people so it's been woefully ignored. We've been sharing this but we urgently need updated information to be able to respond
Extremely informative thread. It's why so many of us do mask bloc work—we experience movement in direct action & the cultural fight.
It requires time, energy, money, "acceptability" etc to fight legal battles & many of us don't have those at our disposal so we fight where we can.
So yes, accessibility is central to the fight against mask bans & absolutely should be leveraged. But it's also so important to not limit the arguments we make against mask bans to violations of ADA. Repression is also key as we argue in this episode
These masks are quite cool—they are the style of some 3M headstrap n95 masks but with ewrloops instead. They also are highly efficiently packed which makes them perfect for distro. These are going to be a great asset for mask blocs.
If you are able to take the risk, the senate meeting IS open to the public, held at 16 West Jones Street, Raleigh, NC 27601 at 4pm TODAY.
If you attend, don't forget to mask up!! 😷
We are encouraged to know they want to keep health exemption in place!
It's time to put pressure on them to reject the criminal enhancement for masking as well!!
It's surprising, but fantastic, to see a mainstream media outlet in 2024 recommending wearing N95 masks, and guiding consumers on where to purchase them.
This is the kind of content we need to normalize the wearing of masks in the long-term!

Our member is raising funds to offset the cost of masks and distribution!
This will help us get more masks to mask blocs in the eastern US.
We've already distributed thousands from this batch of masks and we're about to distribute a lot more!
For the love of God people do not use quotes from Senator Britt to stoke hope!! He said the same thing in senate and then voted for the bill as-is, along with all the other republicans.
They are relying on your confusion!!!
Thank you to all the people working against HB237!! ! It has brought it into the daylight for some great reporting and I'm sure that this pressure is helping create conditions for it to be easier to reject in the House.
It's time to do this IRL with sharing masks too ❤️🔥
SHARE this thread to friends and loved ones in NC! The more people who contact their state senators about
#HB237
, the better off we'll be! If you're not a NC resident, contact the state senate to explain why you won't be visiting NC anymore!
EMAIL AND CALL. The most important targets right now are YOUR state senator (find them using !), Buck Newton (919) 733-5878, Buck.Newton

.gov, and the bill's sponsors. All contact information is here:
And HB237 is horrendous in its own right w/ or without the amendment that makes it illegal to wear a mask for health & safety reasons. It criminalizes protest & enhances criminal punishment, & gives greater powers to religious institutions so no matter what there is no "win" here
Our member is raising funds to offset the cost of masks and distribution!
This will help us get more masks to mask blocs in the eastern US.
We've already distributed thousands from this batch of masks and we're about to distribute a lot more!
Help us cover the cost of N95 mask purchase (at the amazing rate of ~$0.16/mask!) and distro of these and the 3M kn95 masks we have to other blocs and communities in our region!
Notes that wearing a mask could be punished with probation, fines, and time in jail.
Problem with relying on discretion of officers is that the Black teen with leukemia would obviously be targeted and arrested on this premise.
Here in the NC House where GOP leaders have said they’ll vote down the Senate proposal to repeal the law allowing mask-wearing for health reasons.
Started 5 minutes ago and all the Dems are here, but the GOP caucus is nowhere to be seen. Meeting to go over talking points?
#ncpol
@kimleannelliot
It says in public, so it's up to private institutions to decide. It's extremely worrisome to those at public institutions like the UNC system. But yeah ostensibly you couldn't wear one legally outside a hospital on the public sidewalk
Multiple people have mentioned it's possible the house would want to change the amendment to HB237, so keep messaging your NC representatives if you want to increase the pressure to do so!
Senator Lowe comes in wearing a mask and asks if Senator Buck recognizes him. 🔥
Buck cuts him off to ask if there's a question coming.
Lowe asks what this is really about.
Lowe says this addresses groups like antifa, saying we don't know who they are or what they're trying to do
This is an incredible opportunity to help get another 100,000+ masks into communities. Mask blocs on the west coast and in the southwest are coordinating to get a purchase of high quality 3M kn95 masks 🤩
We're almost half way to our fundraiser goal!! Thank you so much to all who've donated/shared; every dollar and every share matter more than you realize! Help us get over 100k masks out to folks in the PNW, CA, and SW areas of the so-called United States:
While it's important that we fight HB237, it has already signaled a green light to profile people for wearing a mask. The criminalization has started whether it passes or not, and impacts BIPOC North Carolinians the most.
(rough quotes) Senator Batch —"as we criminalize immunocompromised people this bill protects the ability of the KKK to wear masks" "if (the KKK) is given permission they can walk around with hoods without repercussion"
This will affect hijab or other religious face covering wearers too.
A mask creates constant probable cause which goes against the basic civil liberties, like the 4th amendment which should give us the liberty to move around free from unreasonable search and seizure
Unfun fact—"thunderstorm asthma" exists.
Pollen can become concentrated & cause mass respiratory distress. In 2016 in Melbourne, eight people died & more than 8,000 went to the emergency room from one band of storms!!
Wear a mask if thunder makes you wheeze
#MaskUp
As anti-mask repression grows our goal is to help normalize and lower the barrier to masking for everyone. Distributing mass amounts of masks is a way we work towards this!
Immunocompromised person says they already get harassed for wearing a mask. They wouldn't be allowed to protest in NC at all due to this, a violation of their 1st amendment rights. They say that if the law remains unclear then it IS meant to criminalize immunocompromised people.
Senator Batch explaining that 700,000 immunocompromised people in North Carolina will be criminalized, as well as the families who support, uses her own cancer experience as an example.
Talking about how this disrupts freedom.
Hi friends! Here to share an open letter to the
@dsa
@DemSocialists
calling on them to carefully consider what Resolution 5 ideas about prioritizing COVID you can bring to your local chapters.
She continues and explains that the senators supporting HB237 are making it seem confusing on whether it's *really* illegal when many lawyers have confirmed "this bill makes it a class one misdemeanor to wear a mask for the protection of health and safety of yourself and others"
@dontwantadothis
It remains illegal to wear a mask for respiratory protection like dust, pollen, or painting!
And the part where it makes it so the public can force people to remove masks is terrifying
Shares that his church congregation feels comfortable coming because of high masking rates there. People learned from Asian countries that it can be normal to mask. "masks are for physical safety and comfort of mind"
Diseases in kids and adults went down with masks.
Since changes were made to the bill the house must see it again and approve. The NC house is overwhelmingly conservative. I think the governor could veto at this point and the senate could override a veto with enough votes.
(I think??)
Y'all are incredible, you helped us get so much closer!! Keep an eye out for the upcoming fundraiser from west coast blocs to get the rest of the pallets and make it a cool half million masks brought into communities 😎
A refusal to compromise indicates that the Republicans may be trying to force it through with an intention to paint opposition as supporters of masked mobs. (end of speaker)
We're not an advocacy org—we're here each day to provide an easy option for ourselves and others to stay safe and wear a mask to prevent illness and breathe clean air.
So if you do know an advocacy org that can be helping educate on HB237, please tag them!!
We had an entire industry around covid19 including n95 manufacturers. He was a customer and mask wearer for a long time before 2020 for allergies.
Notes that constituents will be calling "why can't I wear a mask?"
Notes that the original bill's intention has changed.
“Wearing a mask for health reasons in public going is now CLASS 1 misdemeanor in North Carolina.” This is what years of pandemic denialism has done, and of course all the civil liberties “personal freedom” people are SILENT
If you are also a person working to help people mask in your community, or even with your friends & family, let us know & we'll get you masks if you need them & amplify your efforts!! You're doing something important even if it's stopping just one chain of transmission
If you're telling folks to vote as a solution, that's not an path to change for most in NC. Also if HB237 is enacted the damage is already done...see abortion access if you think voting is an expedient solution to anything
Join us in Asheville next weekend for the
#acabookfair
thanks to
@FirestormCoop
for putting this on!
All of us vendors will be outdoors.
Please dm if you're thinking of stocking up on masks from us and we'll ensure you get the # you need!
On every post about this people are confused about it and some are taking advantage of the confusion to lie about the function of HB237. This kind of obscurity always endangers people, like we see with laws surrounding immigration, gender care, and reproductive care.
@vintageGardnGrl
While it's true that you risk others, we're missing worker protections that allow people to stay home when sick with covid without risking their job. This is a societal problem and masking can limit chains of transmission especially if you can get others around you to wear them
When you're criminalized for existing it's crucially important that your community doesn't let you fall by the wayside. An "us and them" mentality often develops. It can be a hard bridge to maintain but It's pretty amazing how easy the solution is in this situation—we all mask.
@UFWupdates
Companies need to provide this but in the meantime us and other mask blocs have many thousands of respirators/PPE to give to farmworkers! We're working on outreach but please let us know if there's anyone/org we should connect with!!
Not sure who's talking but she's sharing more issues with the bill. Health issues, daily comfort. "most people find it incomprehensible that we would make wearing a mask illegal."
Discussing lack of medical freedom like abortion, privacy around health inquiries
