A major problem at #umich . It’s about tactics of criminalization: surveillance, repression, intimidation (I.e. the threat of pressing charges, police visits to private homes). This is amplified by messaging from the top which is driven by the #UMregents . It affects Jews too +

At #umich , the campus police called around to every unit offering their “services” for the smaller graduation ceremonies. Thankfully many refused. The use of “outside” police forces is also a cover for administrators and regents/trustees who have no oversight of their activities.

I feel like teaching intro to women’s and gender studies used to be getting students to understand intersectionality. It still is, but in addition it has now become trying to correct and reframe students’ (emptied out) understanding and use of the concept.

Glad for this coverage, but be clear: It’s not “divestment from Israel” but from companies specifically invested in Israel’s campaign in Gaza. This is more narrow in scope and some assembly members used the purported vagueness or broad reach to denounce the resolution.

Monday afternoon, the Senate Assembly discussed and passed the resolution to call for the University to divest from Israel. The Assembly also decided on a response to the University’s cancellation of the U-M CSG ballot proposal last Fall.

This is the consequence of both a lack of institutionalization and structural anti-Arabness/SWANA-ness. It’s a gift to be in convo with other ethnic studies fields, but the lack of reciprocation is disappointing. I think engagement has gotten better in Asian Am studies. 1/3

I refuse to accept this. I refuse to shrug and say, this is how it goes (even if this is what the U.S. has done so many times). I refuse to see the slaughter of Arabs, of bombs and war in the “the Middle East” as normal, inevitable, or commonplace. I hope you will refuse too.

I was lucky to get to work with artist Yasmine Nasser Diaz, who created the artwork for this cover. Her vision wove neon pink and glitter (to signify femininity and queerness) with the lace that represents the labor of many Syrian women in the peopling economy. #PossibleHistories

One of my favorite moments of teaching is grading creative final projects. Students take all that they’ve learned, and the stress of the end of the semester, and build it into some really beautiful work. Today I’m looking through zines from my Arab American feminism class. 🙌🏼

New faculty advice: if you want to understand what makes a good recommendation letter, grad admissions and fellowship cmte work will teach you. It's time consuming but more instructive than a template. It becomes clear which letters elevate students and which do them no favors.
