Always remember: Malcolm X BELIEVED women. It cost him everything to do so--his position in the NOI; his relationship with Elijah Muhammad, a man he saw as a father figure; and in some ways, his entire life, a whole life spent with Betty and his 6 daughters. #MalcolmX

academia attracts so many brilliant yet deeply wounded people. i wish we as a profession didn't enable & encourage their toxic behavior. theory can't heal, nor external validation. i hate how the study of so much i find beautiful is done by people who hurt others so much.

In the month, you will see a lot of media stories about the “legacies of 9/11.” Please engage these critically, w/a keen eye on how Muslims are framed, by both “liberal” and “conservative” media. With specific regards to US Muslim communities:

1/3 of the world's Muslims are in Africa. The history of Islam in the US was made by Black people. The most well-known, influential GLOBAL Muslim figures are Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali. Talking "anti-Muslim racism" or "Islamophobia" w/o engaging blackness/Africa is unacceptable.

a small reminder: yes, 68 million people voted for Trump. but that is not “half” the population of the US. total pop is almost 330 mil. so 68 mil is only 20% of total pop. they are completely outnumbered. and that’s why they are acting out the way the are.

I completely hear what you are saying. But 9/11 didn't CREATE these frameworks. "Homeland security"/ "domestic War on Terror" were built upon/enabled by existing programs like COINTELPRO, "law and order" ideologies rooted in silencing Black--in may cases, Black Muslim, dissent.

Anti-Muslim hate didn't begin on 9/11 but it created the structural & institutional framework for our communities to surveilled, spied on, profiled, tortured, entrapped. On the ground, we were spat on, mosques were burnt down, children were bullied and our women were harassed.

what i know after 2 decades of studying race, racialization, & islam: like antiblackness, hatred of islam/muslims is foundational to western being, from the reconquista through the crusades to the war on terror. also, antiblack & anti-muslim hate are co-consituted/imbricated.

3 tropes make up the shape of anti-Muslim racism in the US: the radical Black Muslim (angry, violent), the Poor (veiled) Muslim woman (proves Islam’s backwardness and inferiority), & the Islamic Terrorist (always foreign). Combined, they produce the hatred directed at @IlhanMN .

It's been a rough semester. Thank goodness for my students, who created some utterly amazing final projects for our Islam in/and America class. I hope you don't mind, but I wanted to share a few because they are remarkable & deserve to be celebrated. So here goes: (A THREAD)

From @SJPRutgersNB 's IG: "(This week, Rutgers students passed) 2 bills defining Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism. In a crushing 15 to 3 vote, Rutgers Student Assembly (RUSA) became THE FIRST STUDENT ASSEMBLY to adopt a definition of anti-Palestinian racism."

Dr. @DebraMajeed 's work wholly shaped my own. I simply couldn't have theorized convergences bet Black/WOC & Islamic feminism in my work w/o her concept of "Muslim womanism." She was fierce, sharp, kind, & a trailblazer through & through. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun.

Taking an informal survey. What do you think are the most important sites in the history/story of Islam/Muslims in the US? (e.g. Sapelo Island, Detroit, Harlem)

(5) Note they (don’t) talk about how an entire generation of US Muslim youth have never known a world w/o War on Terror, & how this has done unspeakable damage to them, their communities, the nation. To me, this is THE story. But they don’t want (or don’t know how?) to cover it.

(4) While some Black Muslims are gaining visibility, the long history of Islam in Black American communities is still hardly mentioned, and when it is, is treated as an anomaly or afterthought, not the foundation of the faith in the US, as history has shown.

Dr. Claire Jean Kim published her groundbreaking article, "The Racial Triangulation of Asian Americans" 24 years ago. In it, she lays out the entire playbook of how AsAms have been pitted against AfAms time & time again. Read it yourself here.

(1) Notice how Muslims are (still) mostly only legible through the logics of surveillance and security. Or how they embrace or reject “American values.” Or how they embrace or reject religiosity, & more specifically “traditional” Islam.

A gentle request to Muslims during Ramadan: PLEASE get your history from scholars of history, who actually work in archives, analyze sources, & fact check rigorously. I'm seeing so much harm wrought by errors of "religious" scholars about Islam's history in the U.S. & elsewhere.

There is never a semester of teaching #TheAutobiographyOfMalcolmX (& I have taught it every year for more than a decade) where I do not utterly marvel at the moral, ethical, and spiritual integrity of this man.
