Carbon removal will only ever be a public utility; the sooner we institutionalize that the more effectively we can stoke technological development (likely by private tech co’s vying for procurement contracts) and plan industrial decarb and the (clean) grid against each other

What is the most catalytic thing a company can do for climate? The answer is almost never "purchase offsets." Purchases of permanent, high-quality carbon removal are a part of an ambitious climate strategy, but neutralization claims aren't the best (or only) way to justify them.

A serious economic policy would start with direct public investment to upgrade our crumbling infrastructure. @chrismwhayes on today's Autumn Statement.

@advaitarun_ “It’s not that it’s not possible with the private sector only, but it’s faster, easier, and cheaper to mandate a public company do something rather than incentivize and subsidize private companies to do something they might not end up doing.” (copy paste copy paste copy paste)

A key argument that @Cmmonwealth makes in our recent paper on public generation is that socializing—publicly governing investment and operation of—a systemically significant sector like electricity provides policy room for maneuver and resilience capacity.

Two years ago, when I argued that we need a new emergency stabilization toolbox & that strategic price caps can help fight shocks to essentials, I was accused of heresy. Now the @guardian editorial endorsed my policy playbook. Thank so much @tianran !

Nationalise Bulb 💡 (instead of the taxpayer paying Octopus £1 billion to buy it) Now is the perfect time to set up a state owned energy supplier (like EDF in France which has kept bill rises to only 4%) #NationaliseBulb
