I’m writing about the political history of neuroscience | I’m an asst prof @ ucla ISG | I’m having an amazing time (views here my own, not my employer’s)
NEW ODD LOTS:
How American Workers Got Hooked on Adderall
@tracyalloway
and I had a blast getting to talk to
@_danielle_carr
about what this popular drug actually does. And the historical and market forces that turned it into a workforce staple.
I asked the guy at bibis bakery if I should get the tuna melt or the hummus plate and he goes “well, they’re very different meals. If you’re that confused, I don’t know how to advise you.”
Until further notice I will be boycotting
@usc
and
@columbia
. No talks, no invitations, no coauthorships or grants with anyone tenure track or tenured, etc.
Shafik must resign. USC must reinstate the valedictorian speech. Shame on these administrations!
Most of all, I saw students experiment w making a society: they are experimenting w self governance, and with educating, entertaining, praying with, feeding, defending, organizing and caring for one another. How beautiful is that?!
After 7 years as a grad worker at columbia, I am not often shocked by the administration’s signature blend of hypocrisy, evil, & incompetence. Still, even for them, suspending Ilhan Omar’s daughter the day after Omar intervened in their congressional clown show is amazing work.
i’m an organizer with CU Apartheid Divest
@ColumbiaSJP
, in my 3 years at
@BarnardCollege
i have never been reprimanded or received any disciplinary warnings
i just received notice that i am 1 of 3 students suspended for standing in solidarity with Palestinians facing a genocide.
With less than one month’s notice, Columbia has announced that it will not pay people who are TAing and can’t make it back to the United States. Not because it can’t— peer institutions are able to— but because... they won’t. I’m too mad to make this tweet funny
I’ve needed to say this for a long time. If you are going to post a hot pic (as is natural & your god given right), do not try to make it about anything else, least of all politics or something intellectual or (heaven forbid) anything about struggling w body image. Have dignity.
Yesterday I was trying to explain the dialectic to my undergrads & I think the example that actually worked was that breaking up w your boyfriend and getting back together (negation of negation) is not the same as having never broken up (the identity of identity and nonidentity)
one of the things they teach u in anthropology grad school is that it is ppl who are the most precariously included in a social hierarchy who must incessantly perform their inclusion to outsiders. make of that what u will!
This week’s
@NYMag
cover story by
@_danielle_carr
examines the career of psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk, the author of the bestselling book “The Body Keeps the Score,” and how he popularized the once controversial trauma diagnosis.
A friend says about her boyfriend “he really does just sit down and read Hegel in German for three hours at night.” That’s not real, I say. That’s something guys pretend to do, I say. “That’s what I thought too, before,” she says.
The most fuckboy type of instagram behavior is the guy whose last tagged photo is from 2018 and who posts nothing except for like every 53 days will posts a photo like this— zero socially relevant information. Who are you hanging out with, sir? No sense of duty to the audience.
At a brunch at an undisclosed LES restaurant, a woman says to her gay friend “have I told you about my solitaire addiction?” and he goes “you’re not addicted to solitaire babe. You’re addicted to cocaine.”
Some of the most insipid writing you’ll ever read is the result of someone expecting you to be as moved by the spectacle of their self pity as they are
every explainer i hear on inflation is like "greedflation is a bit of a misnomer for the phenomenon, because it implies bad actors. Actually, companies are just raising prices under the cover provided by COVID and the Ukraine War as much as they can, bc it's rational to do so."
NOW: Columbia University faculty link arms and form a wall in front of the entrance to the ‘Gaza Solidarity Encampment’ as hundreds of students encircle the both lawns
Students remaining in the encampment were told they could face disciplinary action after 2PM
There should be a way of telling Spotify that repeatedly listening to a song is epiphenomenal to a bout of transient mental illness and should not be factored into your algorithm
feeling insane on the eve of the genocidal destruction of gaza and watching liberals, whose line has been "you have to break a few eggs" about ukraine, sincerely claim that there's nothing to be done about imminent slaughter except to denounce "violence"
The thing that Malcolm gladwell brain (or this American life brain, or nyt brain) gets wrong is that the truth about reality is not so much counterintuitive as it is obscene
Wow. Amanda Gorman “tomorrow is not written by our odds but by the audacity of our hope.”
“The American dream is no dream at all but a dare to dream together.”
God, she’s magnificent.

2850 academics, writers, and intellectuals have committed to boycotting Columbia and Barnard. This group includes over 1,389 tenured/ tenure track professors. Their demands are below. You can read the letter and see the full list of signatories here.
(claude shannon invented information theory, warren mcculloch was one of the major impresarios of cybernetics, and i'm assuming you all know who L ron hubbard was)
Men solve a late 30s crisis of personal fashion two ways as far as I can tell. 1- start wearing a blazer for some reason 2- begin dressing in Gear (camping, surfing, etc)
We are trapped in a system of perverse incentives that rewards parroting anachronistic tropes, such that talking about actually-occurring reality becomes increasingly rare. I wd rather hear someone honestly describe eating a sandwich than stitch together these recycled bits
Really upset the academy has imploded because I was looking forward to talking people in their early twenties into devoting a decade of their life to looking into some random bullshit that occurred to me in spin class an hour before our advising meeting
Today I bring you a little amuse-bouche, a short essay about adderall in which I hypothesize that not only is the drug not fixing the “attention crisis“— it is actively making it worse. Bonus features include my theory of millenial literature. Enjoy!
We are LIVE and public with the Columbia/Barnard academic and cultural boycott. As of this moment, we have 521 signatories. Please sign on and share widely. Solidarity!
exhausted so will write more later but initial report from ucla encampment: camp is running disciplined operation to prevent escalations which the counterprotesters are constantly trying to ignite. Yesterday they tried to surge into the camp and were so clearly the aggressors 1/
The people who came up with capital one cafe were so clearly like “genius… they will associate us w community… the ‘third place’ if you will” etc. but in reality it’s like what the fuck is this
I am a little banged up but ok. The camp needs protective eye wear and bodies if you can make it. There was no “clash” it was a very serious and violent attack by a group of guys in their 30s-50s. So many students injured. In awe of the bravery I saw last night.
The best advice I ever got in grad school was from a member of my committee, horrified: “danielle you really cannot say ‘blah blah you get the picture’ as a transition between slides”
"As we're seeing, increasingly professors subject to violence that differs very little from what the state is meting out on students, I think faculty need to realise that our lot lies with solidarity with the students"
UCLA professor Danielle Carr
There are seven great pleasures in life. Six are dissociative (in order: good sex, abstract thought, running, literature, drugs, bad sex.)
The nondissociative pleasure is color
In her 1976 address to the national conference on socialist women, Barbara ehrenreich jokes that a “socialist feminist” might be described as “someone who goes to twice as many meetings” lolol
We simply do not have the time to entertain bad faith accusations of antisemitism. They are unserious and designed to break US protest at the time it is most exigently needed. Los Angeles, there is a protest Saturday (oct 14) at the Israeli consulate (11766 Wilshire) at 12:30 pm.
It is so easy now to condemn the war on terror. But we remember who did not. We will remember those who called for “nuance” and whatabouted in this moment of *actual* US backed ethnic cleansing. God have mercy on Gaza. The horror. No words. God have mercy.
looking at the spreadsheet of academics who have signed on to boycott Columbia and feeling truly moved to see this kind solidarity from PhD students to tenured professors, across so many disciplines. yes!!!! yes!!!!!!!!
Our job now — other than raising hell— is to show that this moment has only one interpretation possible. The liberal positon on palestine is and always has been genocidal. Nothing happening now— despite its unimaginable horror— is surprising
i genuinely feel like i am tripping watching people straightfacedly talk about "terrorists." we learned nothing from the war on terror, we just got bored of it after two decades but the entire script is embedded latent in the US psyche ready to be activated. so unspeakably grim.
Btw to all my sisters out there— whenever someone is being weird to you, my advice is just default to “they’re in love w me.” This has saved me a lot of time, feels great, works, helps you be kind, & is basically true at least half the time
Watching the rationalizations ppl contort themselves into re: why they don’t need to say anything about Gaza (“it’s virtue signaling” “It’s not my mode” etc) is really something. sorry, now is really the time you do have to say something or idgaf what you have to say ever again

For the entire summer we were told by our departmental administrations, repeating word from the top brass, that we would be able to TA remotely. People got leases overseas. Now they have less than a month to get visas and in MANY cases this won’t be possible.
Mass incarceration is the result of a political arrangement that violently disenfranchises massive portions of a racialized underclass. It is not “caused” by crime much less poor early childhood attachment. Hope this helps.
It is august in Paris. On thé bridge by saint Michel American couples kissing everywhere. One young duo, blonde and lanky, strides balefully ahead of me. She says “you can make me watch anime or you can sleep with me. It’s your choice”
I genuinely believe that this should trigger a renewed conversation among the left about voting strategy. I do not know the answer but the idea that we assemble again behind biden— the entire body revolts
Buying postcards in an antique store in marseille; I ask about some showing gorgeous photos of naked young girls. The owner says “ c'était un photographe très célèbre. très talentueux. malheureusement, il était pédophile. mais les photographies sont certainement inoubliables.”
Most grad workers suspect that the logic behind this unbelievably cruel and asinine policy is to force international students to come back in an attempt to fast track reopening campus in the spring. Anything to keep the foreign tuition money flowing 🤑
Sometimes in Los Angeles, you get the feeling that passing interactions are so friendly because people are testing the thesis of their own charisma on you
Just learned that Philip roth was suffering terrible writers block w Portnoy’s complaint— bc he knew half the money would go to his ex wife— which suddenly lifted when she died in a car crash
I’m going to say one last thing before logging off and actually going on vacation: pointing out the sociological fact of the expansion of a concept (here, trauma) is not to invalidate that concept, or say it is misguided, etc. I’m interested in why people use one concept rather…
experiencing physically painful fomo about the LA socialist scene in the late 70s…. We have GOT to make socialist organizing great again around here my lord, this is the programming for just four months of the socialist media group
