The only students who stayed after class to talk about design were international students from... Nigeria.
Again, I cannot pronounce their names properly even after trying 10 times. I'm that bad.
@Ade_M0LA
I just noticed that. I'm trying to find more Industrial Designers but Nigerians seem to be some of the most loveliest people I've met online.
Ted Lasso's Nigerian characters show the same thing.
@EneyemeO
@tife_olayinka
I'm making it a priority to try and learn. I've always done this for my students. Respect is always paid back ten fold if I get it right or at least put effort into trying.
I woke up to a lot of new followers here. 99% of them Nigerian.😀
But the original 3 who've followed and I conversed and learned the most from are:
@nobodhee
@SuN_dzgns
@Kanayo_Uzo
&
@mr_ameji
. Great designers and even better people who've shared insights into NIgerian culture.
1st Semester (1st year) ID : 2 hour project.
Using only 1 piece of 8x11" paper, build a structure that can hold an apple. You can manipulate the paper in any way. (tear, fold, cut, roll etc). The apple must be at least 4" off the tabletop.

1. It still works.
2. Google has never been a design first company.
3. The settings is what really needs the UI work. The save button is still from 2005
4. Web fonts are still not implemented.
5 years ago today, I gave my notice as an in house Creative Director because I wasn't being compensated for the value and money I brought the company.
They called their lawyers to see if they could force me to work beyond my notice. They choose to pay a lawyer instead of me. In
How many designers get to see the public's reaction to your designs. Youtube can show you the best and worst. I'm lucky to see over 10K comments on my speaker design that are positive.
My co-worker printed and did perfect binding on his portfolio and sent it to the biggest agencies in NYC. They all sent him an email after receiving his portfolio in the mail.
Be memorable.
@Josh_egesi
It's expensive but I've seen good things come out of it. The head of the masters program is one my good friends and mentors. A lot of ID people move into UX after this course and make a lot of money.
In our Package Design class, I asked the students "who here has kept packaging from an Apple product?"
Most hands went up.
You've come to the right place. You will learn how to make the consumer keep empty boxes for no apparent reason except for the fact you believe the package

Whoa. My name translates to Brett (British) Hooper (maker of hoops on barrels). Pretty boring.
I would love to learn more about Nigerian names and what they mean.
@replyingurdad
These students do not show this type of pressure, but I understand it. I am one of those who won some lottery at birth only because the Hoopers left a bombed out London in 1945 for a better life in Canada. A colder, better life.

Who are your communication team? All these posts will just fill up with great ratio comments and not convince nor persuade anybody to vote you back in. You all look desperate and not appear to be in charge.
Please stop rebranding existing companies. You are not designing. You are showing competence in software skills.
Create an imaginary brand with a non-visual word to test your abilities to communicate or convey an idea.
@dopequdus
Design or invent something that will change the world. The world's greatest inventions were not designed by a company, but by a person in their garage with no money.
The Wright brothers who invented the airplane, built bicycles first.
This is Delayna. I taught her in first year studio. She wasn't very good in first year but she worked harder than anyone in class and I noticed the effort she would put into projects. She was intimidated by people who could draw better than her and she was determined to improve.
Sometimes we don't need to design in CAD to create products. These were all designed in Illustrator in orthographic project and dimensioned for the manufacturer. Even graphic designers can create products without knowing CAD.
@TWilsonOttawa
If we continue to dwell on the small problems (race, gender, equity) the large problems (mental health, homeless, opioids) will eventually affect all of us.
Phone-sized buttons on a screen that size. Just look at the car's natural shaking and see how difficult it is to touch your screen in an area that size.
We continue to have designers who believe aesthetics are more important than design. They are not the same.
Ooh, quite a bit of spray, might want to check I’ve got some sort of rear lights on, maybe even fogs … wait … which menu?
This is getting depressingly commonplace.
Be interested in other people's professions to get better at design.
Work in a restaurant kitchen to understand other people's problems to get better at design.
Problem: Some people can't reach or can't lift a heavy stand up paddle board to their roof rack. Some people hate inflating their SUPs before going out on the water. Some people have smaller vehicles.
Solution: Give people options.
Our team designed everything for this product.
My friend

decided to do the "permissionless apprentice" and redesigned a website for a local automotive shop. He contacted them, but he has not received a response. Let me know if you think they are missing out on credibility in 2024.
Their current site:
Design Twitter is full of charlatans who have 10s of thousands of followers, post their revenue constantly, offer design tips and provide technical courses on the newest trend, software or about getting clients.

I've had many Nigerian students over the last few years in Canada who blow my mind with their creativity. My problem has been pronouncing their beautiful names properly. Inioluwa Oluyemi becomes "ini"... 🫢
One of the best designs of the last 100 years
- Low Tech
- Over 100 Billion Sold
- Designed in 1950
- Designed in Paris based on an Argentinian patent
- Low cost and attainable
- Manufacturing tech is first of it's kind
- I've used them for over 24 years designing stuff.

Ah yes. I do. But I also teach the skills and share the knowledge of 25 years of working for private companies, in an occupation that is never funded by gov't and creates products and services that have made billions for the economy and made the planet better.
@novikoff
@theapplehub
The obsession of some designers with aesthetics vs functionality blows my mind.
Although, early in my career I was like that. Both in aesthetics and my cult following of Apple products.
@socoloffalex
Tropicana thought their product was a luxury good. They forgot their main customer needs help in choosing the product.
The change was too drastic for the simple consumer (who we should be designing for) and within this highly competitive grocery area, if you can't find your
