I’ve checked into a lot of hotels in Japan. I may have been asked for an ID sometimes and I may even have let them copy it, too. I literally can’t remember because I don’t give a shit. The only thing I care about is what time my free breakfast starts and where the onsen is.

I live in one of the most touristed areas of Kyoto. The vast majority of foreign tourists are respectful and courteous. They obviously came here because they love Japan. But the highly visible actions of tiny minority cast a taint on everyone. It’s a damn shame.

The travel ban is purely political. Banning non-residents from entering Japan does nothing to make us safer. As long as entrants are required to quarantine, it doesn’t matter if they are residents or not. Making the quarantine stricter for all entrants makes a lot more sense.
