Penal substitutionary atonement says that Jesus’s crucifixion is him suffering the wrath/justice of *God* toward humanity. But the NT says otherwise. Jn 3:16; 1 Jn 3:16; 4:9–12; Rm 5:8; 8:35, 37, 39 all say the cross is an act of God's *love.* "But wait! There's more!" 🧵

Guys I need help. I have friends who can’t find a single speech in Acts of a clear Gospel presentation—after 2 millennia of Bible reading. Surely if Acts is inspired it should speak abt Jesus’ substitutionary death & mention “atonement”! Y is all the focus on the resurrection!?

Paul: A *pornos*, one who practices *porneia* (sexual immorality), “will not inherit the kingdom” (1 Cor 6:9–10; cf. Gal 5:19–21). So that unrepentant Corinthian pornos is a goner (5:1)? P: Well, his flesh will be destroyed, but he'll be "saved in the day [of judgment]" (5:5).

I don’t know why some think it’s so implausible that Paul would be a universalist, as if the notion first arose after him w Origen or something…even though it’s also found in Second Temple Jewish texts that predate Paul & he consistently makes explicit universalist claims…

If Jesus’s death is substitutionary because it’s “for” (Greek: hyper) us, then so is his resurrection bc it’s also “for” (hyper) us in 2 Cor 5:15. But we all know saying “Jesus was raised as my substitute so that I don’t have to be” is 100% false. Same with his death.

If you're going to read the Bible as a "unified story" as a Christian at least ground that in the "metanarratives" w/in the NT: eg, Col 1:15–20; Rom 5:12–21; John 1:1–18; 1 Cor 15:21–28; 2 Cor 5:14–21. Fair warning: You'll end up a supralapsarian universalist if u go this route.

Another exegetical nail in the coffin for Christian Nationalism: The verbs used w the "kingdom of God/heaven" in the NT r about "entering," "inheriting," "announcing," "proclaiming," etc. the kingdom; it is never something we "build," "make," "create," "bring" or "establish."

If ur a Xian who grew up evangelical & ur pastors gave expository “teaching” sermons emph context & used axioms like “context is king” or “a text w/o a context is a prooftext” & U sought teaching opportunities, & read NT Wright ur an ex-/deconstructing. evang/liberal/progg now.

Man, some Christians really want to follow Jesus but only so long as it isn’t to the cross for co-crucifixion.

P.S. I want to reiterate I think very highly of  @bibleproject  & esp  @timmackie  's research & work! I assign a lot of their material for my classes. So don't read this as a dig at them. I'm grateful their careful work that simulates dialogue & brings us back to the Scriptures!

Everyone needs to know that founding fundamentalist James Orr's essays in _The Fundamentals: A Testimony to the Truth_ (1910–1915) deny YEC & affirm evolution. Ch 11 "The Early Narratives of Genesis" & ch. 18 "Science and Christian Faith.” Here's my lecture slides on this:

Denny Burk's essay arguing for Eternal Conscious Torment in _Four Views on Hell_ is embarrassingly bad. I can't even believe it was published. I would have solicited another contributor. I would give it a D only bc the grammar is fine.

All the couple of “for Asbury skeptics, here’s my story” 🧵s all I read was “I was skeptical but when I got there *I* felt good.” When we get stories that look like Acts 2 & 5 where suddenly people’s pantries r getting filled & debts paid/forgiven, then we can call it revival.

Just a note that some of the most descriptive depictions of an ostensible postmortem “hell” from Jewish(-Xian) sources in the Second Temple period explicitly state that those in there could/would ultimately get out and be shown mercy.

A working thought(s): God quite literally tolerates the presence of impurity in Leviticus. Impurity accumulates in the sanctuary & stays in the Holy of Holies all year long. There's only a brief moment when it is all purged (Yom Kippur) & then it's back to being impure.

I don't believe for a second these folks do anything other than cherrypick various things to give off the *impression* that they read. The jig is up. Y'all rn't doing "this" to actually learn. Ur just a marketing network that can't even stomach ingesting ur own vapid products.

They just give lip service to the Bible to use it as a weapon for cultural & political supremacy. They treat the Bible as Israel treated the bronze serpent in the wilderness. What was originally designed to witness to God's salvation itself became an idol (2 Kgs 18:4). 3/

What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? Paul: HELL NO! DO YOU NOT KNOW ANYTHING!? ONLY SOMEONE WHO HASN'T IN FACT BEGUN THEIR ONTOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATION INTO THE IMAGE OF CHRIST CAN EVEN ASK SUCH A THING!! ~Romans 6:1ff

This thread is so good. And I think one of the contributing factors here is that the Christianity they left behind was one that itself didn’t reckon w the fact that *everything* is formational. They function as if everyone is just the sum total of their “beliefs.” Since +

It is good to reckon with the fact that your spiritual formation has rendered you a bad neighbor. But if you do not reckon with the attitude your formation bestowed upon you, you will take it with you even after disavowing the community. You still gon be a bad neighbor. 6/7

Did you know Jesus is sometimes *more strict* than the Pharisees when it comes to purity. E.g., in Matt 23:25–26 Jesus sides w Sadducees (& Qumran) over the lax Pharisees.

N. T. Wright's characterization of the Pharisees as the "religious right" of Jesus' time is inexcusably inaccurate, so much so that it is hard to explain how someone with his level of knowledge of ancient Judaism and Christianity could have made it.

Since more r finding this, I’ll add Acts 2:41–47 & 4:31–35 for the #asburyrevival . The 1st 2 episodes of the Spirit filling the church lead immediately to meeting the material needs of others. This is instructive. What God has joined together let no “revival” separate.

Holy smokes @SBLsite registration is expensive when you're no longer a student. I know I'm one of the lucky ones with a PD fund, but the registration cost itself is 40% of that fund. This has to be prohibitive for so many contingent scholars. Yikes.

Yes, which is why altho salvation is an ontological transformation, it is *not* predicated on achieving a certain level of transformation on this side of the eschaton in order to earn access to eschatological life. U can no more merit your resurrection as u can your first birth.

Good morning! Just wanted to let y’all know that the Love of God is in fact unconditional and not at all tied to your repentance, the Bible *does* say this (1 John 2:2 🌚), that love leads us to repentance & NOT vice versa (Romans 2:4 🌚), and that any other gospel is false 😊

Slaves: There’s a whole lotta liberation in the Bible. Other oppressed groups: You know it! “Progressive” Academics: No. You’re not allowed to find liberation in the Bible. You’re reading the Bible wrong. Them: I’m going to be liberated through reading the Bible even harder.

Not one of the substantive critiques from folks like @sheilagregoire or @AlethiaWrites or @aimeebyrdPYW or @LauraRbnsn etc were saying anything close to sex "not being something you can talk about in public." @sheilagregoire talks about sex all the time! Come on!

Paul used to stone & hunt down heretics. But then he met the Crucified Lord & engaged his enemies w/ a pen instead. It wasn’t like he just happened to be fighting for the wrong team. The *violence itself*—that method of “purifying” the community—was part of what he repented of.+

But this part is not funny at all: “'Imagine the pastor today that had the stones to pick a fight & then slaughter 400 denominational leaders, slit their throats as a public event,' Driscoll said. 'That’s Elijah.'” 🚨📷 1/2

P: The seed of Christ is already in all (Col 1:27) & God is in birth-pains until Christ is in fact formed in all (cf. Gal 4:19). Either the purifying waters of baptism unite us w Christ or the purifying fires of judgment will so in the end Christ will be "all & in all" (Col3:11).

Even they know the content from their tribe isn't worth their time. And, if u won't read something from someone u "like" & r endorsing, the chances that u read anything *at all* is close to approaching absolute zero.
