Just found out a story I produced for Illinois Public Media won TWO awards! It's my first time winning an award for journalism. I'm really proud of myself 🥲
🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿
I let myself rot in bed yesterday. I gave myself permission to not do SHIT, but today I got up and called Doug Mitchell from
@nextgenradio
who listened and gave advice.
“Stay present & keep your head UP”
I got this.
Hi y'all! I'm temporarily freelancing with La Voz at the Chicago Sun-Times. Super excited to build on what
@MeDicenAmbi
and
@HechaEnChicago
have started!
Feel free to send me any pitches relating to Latinos in Chicago/Illinois. Email in bio! :)
I am excited to announce that I have joined the LA Times as a reporter for the new De Los team (follow us @ delosangelestimes) on IG. This is an absolute dream for me, and I am so excited to continue sharing Latinx stories!
@RickSteves
100% I’ve seen strikes in Paris and London and it’s made me more aware of the issues going on and how different communities respond to them. Even if it means delays in commute, it often leads me to explore a different area of the city I otherwise would not see.
I feel like my life changed when I saw Shakira’s MTV Unplugged performance. Since then, her music has guided me through every important milestone in my life.
This week I revisited Shakira’s career as she receives the 2023 MTV Lifetime Achievement Award:
Universal Horror Nights is bringing the spooky tales of Latin America to life with its new “Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America” maze.
I spoke to creative director
@john_murdy
who credits the creation of the maze to Latino horror fans.
I’ve been crying in waves all morning and am slowly trying to process next steps. I’m grateful for my colleagues and my friends and family ❤️ also thankful for
@delosLAtimes
that gave this little Waukegan journalist a chance to shine even if just for a moment.
Wooooo! This is my first article post-layoffs. Thank you
@DeniseFlorez
for giving me an opportunity to write for
@CaloNewsLA
Here are the 21 Latino artists/acts performing at Coachella 2024.
What do the candy, golf, and BBQ industry all have in common? They've tried to lobby extending Daylight Saving Time to increase sales.
But health experts are against a permanent switch to Daylight Saving Time as it disrupts our internal clock, which leads to more health issues.
This past week, I participated in NPR’s Next Generation Radio, in their first ever Chicago cohort!
In my story, I centered Austin Cantu, a young community leader who revitalized an abandoned art park in Waukegan and in the process created his sense of home.
Our first Next Gen Radio: Chicago is done!
A project that included two 2014 Next Gen mentees who are now working journalists, a former student of mine from when I was teaching at Georgetown and who is now a reporter for WBEZ-FM 91.5, and me, three days i…
Rahm Emanuel dissolved the Chicago Department of Environment due to budget cuts. Lightfoot ran with the promise of re-establishing it... more than a decade later, there is still no dept.

The Chicago Headline Club is proud to announce 2023's FOIA Fest Boot Camp Cohort.
Now in its third year, Boot Camp is a mentorship program supporting early-career journalists of color on the path to investigative journalism.

@HeatherCherone
Thank you for making this distinction Heather. As someone who lives in Waukegan (born and raised), this distinction is very important to the bigger conversation of antisemitism in the north shore area.
I'll never forget looking up a brilliant TV journalist to see what her career looked like as she was coming up in the industry. You know, for inspiration.
Both of her parents were journalists w/ blue links to their name on Wikipedia 😐
You really have to make shit happen for yourself in this industry. No one is going to hand you the opportunities unless you're a nepo-baby or have generational wealth, unfortunately.
My first article with La Voz
@Suntimes
“[Tourism] needs to be in the service of the folks who live there because otherwise you do see displacement [and] gentrification,” - Rob Fojtik
@ChooseChicago
I wrote about Xavi’s success for De Los when his song reached
#1
earlier this month.
I told
@HexPositive
that I wanted to interview him right before we both got laid off.
“She feels what a girl feels when you’re going through a really bad heartbreak”
I talked to fans about heartbreak and how
@karolg
's music has helped them heal. ❤️🩹
I wrote about legacy of “Livin’ la Vida Loca” and the “Latin Explosion” it supposedly triggered.
Spoiler alert: it was all a marketing ploy ✨ but are we really surprised?
Incredibly proud of all the work and research
@AndreaSanFlores
put into this long read about livin’ la vida loca and the supposed Latin explosion it kicked off, which turned out to be a marketing ploy
“What if this linguistic shame, and shaming that takes place within the community, what if that’s a reflection of these broader political dynamics and broader societal dynamics where people are navigating this double bind?”-
@DrJonathanRosa
Most U.S. Latinos speak Spanish, and those who don’t are shamed by their own
A story about the shame Latinos feel over not speaking Spanish and how Latino identity is intertwined with views about Spanish. Read about the latest

analysis:
“Our language is beautiful, and we should teach it to the next generation, but understand that it evolves,” she said. ... There needs to be more understanding and compassion.”
My commentary on the Emmy nominations:
"...it may finally be time for Hollywood to move away from their caricature concepts of Latinidad and lean into the subtle sublime aspects that make us who we are without question."
@latimes
Maria Martin, the force behind ‘Latino USA,’ dies at 72.
I talked to one of her mentees Mandalit del Barco (
@Radioactive22
) who said "Maria would be very happy to see two Latinas talking about her and doing stories about her."
Mexicans in Mexico: “Los mexicanos nacemos donde nos da la rechingada gana!”
Also Mexicans in Mexico: “tu no eres Mexicano porque no naciste en México” (to US-born children of Mexican immigrants)
Make it make senseeeee
“This is why we wanted to overstaff our polling places ahead of the Nov. 8 election in Chicago. Make sure that we’ve got enough staff, we've got enough support and that people feel safe.”
The new iteration of “The Office” has been picked up to series at Peacock.
According to the official logline, the series will focus on “a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”
The post-layoff depression kicked in this morning. I'd resigned myself to rot in bed all day. Then I got up, drank a protein shake and remembered who the fuck I am.
Full circle moment for
@JessicaPerezLA2
! She started as a volunteer mentor when Boyle Heights Beat launched in 2010 and then became deputy editor. Perez returns to serve as Senior Editor of Boyle Heights Beat, managing all editorial staff.

on ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? by Shakira: “The Spanish-language album sold more than 1 million copies in its first month, reaching platinum status in the U.S., and it is regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone.” 🔗
Was chatting with someone yesterday about what an honor it is to grow old and being called certain things like Doña, or Señora. I can’t wait till I get to say things like joven or mija, or when I get to be la señora que “te va llevar si no te portas bien” in the store.
Christian is such an amazing editor. Not only is he brilliant, but he's also an incredibly kind and compassionate leader.
The L.A. Times dropped the ball in this decision, but if you're on the hunt for a stellar writer or editor, he's your guy!
Whether it’s a mental or physical workout, members said they are strengthening the bodies they have, at times, struggled to love.
“I want them to feel that they can do anything in this world, anything in this life. They can make any changes,” Wilson said.
When not being utilized as a gym, the space hosts conversations for the community. Past events include discussions about breast cancer, sex, miscarriage, abortion and infant loss.
For Mireya Martinez, WWM provided a different perspective on fitness.
“I didn’t want to be brainwashed by the image that I needed to be like an Instagram model. No, I need to be myself.”
As girls get older, physical activity often decreases, notably for Black and brown girls as they move into adolescence and become more self-conscious about their bodies. Especially “if they have been victimized or they’re teased about aspects of their appearance.”Carter said.
Kinda upset my extended family didn’t super disperse when they came to the US. My bf has family all over the country and I only have family in Illinois and Wisconsin 😢
But Carter said there are ways to make fitness more inclusive by taking a more community-centered approach.
WWM is taking a community approach to fitness by creating events that go beyond workouts.
Credits to Alonzo Stallings for filming, Tim Boyd for editing, and Joanna Hernandez for her endless support, supervision, and voice! Special thank you to
@DePaulU
and WWM Fitness.
Incredibly thankful for

Also, I will state unequivocally that if you ignore the Latino community as a journalism outlet, you will not survive. It might not be now, but it will happen eventually if you don't start planning the foundation for the demographic future.
Omg guys I just filed my last review of the night! My head hurts.
That was the most eventful Sueños I've ever had, but I have so many good things already online with much more on the way.
Phew. I'm excited to have a more relaxed day tomorrow!
This is the saddest comment on the
@nytimes
opinion piece about American theater. I wish this woman had told her family she was going with a couple of girlfriends instead or was just going to enjoy an evening by herself.
This is for sure a hot take. I was a low-income, first-gen student at Stanford. If I saw I was getting a 79.9% you can bet I was emailing my professor about it. You should understand that not every student is starting from the same place. What’s not equitable about giving grace?
My academic hot take, for all faculty who teach undergrads: not only is it important NOT to support grade-grubbing, we need to tell them not to do it, and explain why. And then follow through on what we tell them! A short thread:
I just want to point out that Waukegan has 5 Superfund sites, 3 of which are on the EPA’s National Priority List. Most of these toxic sites, including a coal ash factory, are located right by the lake.
Waukegan makes a pitch to the

I loved getting to show off my Flamenco skills in front of the iconic Charo, taking home my first mini challenge win🤭. Due to my DACA status, which I’m proud to have the opportunity to highlight on the show, I cant just randomly make it to Spain. But…
Produced a segment yesterday on the four-term Cook County Board President,

When asked if she has thoughts about seeking a fifth term, she responded, “I just got elected, ask me again in four years.”
