Just learned that the Blinder-Oaxaca (1973) method was **actually** developed by Evelyn Kitagawa in 1955 - a woman and sociologist/demographer - but neither cited her... Wonder about other examples of economists ignoring contributions from other social sciences

Who uses the possibility of longer parental leave? Short answer: Mothers! But why is that? In this working paper, I show that gender norms rather than standard economic incentives explain how couples decide who spends time on child-rearing. [1/8] Link:

For decades, we’ve known that job loss leads to lower earnings and higher risk of unemployment. But we know very little about gender differences In our paper, we (w. @RiaIvandic ) estimate gender gaps and disentangle the role of childcare and human capital

The "old boys' club" gets blamed for gender gaps in promotions But hard evidence is difficult to come by... With amazing data, @zoebcullen & @pereztruglia show that if the (new) boss smokes, other smokers are promoted The effect is similar to being a man with a male boss

Skal sygeplejerskerne have mere i løn? Måske.. men det kommer ikke til at løse et grundlæggende problem I @informeren har jeg skrevet om købermonopol, rigide lønninger og konsekvenser for sundhedssektoren

"sexism where a woman currently resides adversely affects her labor market outcomes relative to men, increases marriage, and reduces childbearing age" A mover-design to disentangle the role of prejudice-based discrimination vs internalized norms. Such a cool paper 🤩

While the average American woman’s SES seems to have improved over the past 50 years, less attention is given to the vast differences between states. @KerwinKCharles , @GuryanJonathan & @jesspan13 how a region's level of #sexism affects women’s outcome.

What are the effects on the gender pay gap from better commuting opportunities? Improving public transport reduces the pay gap - because of better (relative) labour market effects for women, but this also lowers the cost of day-care. Very cool paper by @eunjeeecon !

Understanding parenthood’s contribution to gender inequality is not easy The devil is in the detail. Who is in the control group? Fathers, childless women, those who have a child later in life? Even IVF succes might not produce a clean control group

the New York Times once declared, “One of the worst career moves a woman can make is to have children.” But having kids isn't an inherent wage-and-job killer. I've spent the last few months digging into evolving research on the motherhood penalty: /1

Such cool graphs in this paper by @adamaltmejd 🤩 Using cut-offs for uni admission to show that kids follow their parents into the same degree Seems to be a role model effects - and not comparative advantage! Larger for same-sex parents and in gender incongruent fields

Did you know that parents' college major influences their kids' major choice? I didn't! "University graduates are two to five times as likely to hold a degree in the field that their parents graduated from." Fascinating.

@florianederer @JohnHCochrane I think we underestimate the share of researchers who have kids before tenure. Some numbers here: And in Denmark, researchers -regardless of gender - do not appear to delay fertility A decent income during the PhD seems important

When men assigned to teams with women, they change their view on gender equality at home and at work. And they change their self-image: they are less likely to disavow femininity I love a good randomization, but the best part of this paper is the focus on men and their gender!
