A useful trick for reading papers in PDF. You clicked on a hyperlink that took you to a Figure, Table or Appendix at the end of the document. You probably want to go back, right? Don't scroll up. In Windows, press Alt + Left Arrow. In Mac, press Command + Left Arrow.

Tip #1 : Act fast! If you love the paper, submit your report ASAP. Editors see their decisions as an optimal stopping problem. They invite more referees than they expect to need, and skim through the reports as they come in. So, the order in which reports are submitted matters.

Show the editor that you are aware of the manuscript’s limitations. E.g.: “The paper does not use an experiment, so the causal identification is far from ideal. However, this is the very first time a paper was able to do X. That’s an impressive feat that others will follow.”

For instance, sometimes I read a paper and the first thought that comes to mind is: “This is so cool, I wish I came up with this idea!” If you have the same thought, just tell the editor. This will send a strong message, specially if the editor thinks highly of your own research.

(2/11) Let's start with the problem: the typical paper gets published after being rejected by many journals. Authors start aiming higher than expected, and if it doesn't go through, eventually they start "going down" to less selective journals. This is incredibly inefficient.

Tip #2 : Show awareness of the weaknesses. Positive reviewers sometimes send a short report just saying that the paper is above the bar. But let’s say the other reviewer recommends rejection based on specific concerns (e.g., the identification strategy is not persuasive enough).

Tip #3 : Show your love! If you love the paper, say it. This is the language I encounter most often: “The research is carefully executed and the paper is well-written.” This far from enough to get the editor excited about the paper, specially if the editor is from another field.

(4/11) Indeed, the reason why referee reports take so long to begin with is precisely because the referees are being bombarded by an inefficiently high number of referee requests. Let me propose an alternative system. N>1 journals collaborate to handle joint submissions.

If the 2 R&Rs are submitted first, the editor will most likely stop and invite a revision. If Reject comes first, the editor may stop and reject. Even if the first two referees are mixed (1 R&R and 1 Reject), the editor is likely to stop and reject. So the order matters a lot!

(3/11) This sequential process means that a paper may take several years until it is finally accepted, mostly because it is waiting for editors and referees to do their job. So many referee reports and decision letters are a monumental waste of time for the editors and referees.

(5/11) Step 1: Along with the paper, the authors should submit their rank-order preferences over journals: they prefer journal 1 the best, journal 2 second, etc. Step 2: The "chief editor" would invite 5 referees.

(10/11) However, I think that is would be a good thing: this system would give incentives to the authors to work really hard on their paper before submitting it. The referees would find themselves with significantly fewer referee requests on their inboxes.

My recommended algorithm: work on multiple projects, but invest in each proportional to the probability that it becomes your JMP. Split your time evenly while the projects are equally promising, but focus almost exclusively on the JMP once it has revealed itself. #econtwitter

I often say to grad students: a reasonable thing to aim for in grad school is ~2-3 essentially complete and posted papers, alongside your JMP. This often looks like your JMP, plus your 2nd-yr paper, a paper from RA'ing for a faculty, or from working with classmates

This leaves the editor wondering: did the positive referee read the paper carefully? Did this reviewer thought of the omitted variable bias mentioned by the negative reviewer? What about that p-value from column (3)? The editor may take the safe route and reject the paper.

Let's say an Editor invited 3 referees for a paper. Those referees would (eventually) recommend: 1 Reject and 2 R&Rs. If the editor waited for all 3 referees, the decision would be Revise. Let's see what is likely to happen when the reports are submitted in different orders.

Another great summary by @econimate ! This is one of my favorite Youtube channels, and a great #econtwitter resource. You should consider incorporating these videos in your undergraduate/graduate classes. They provide a fun way of learning about the latest economics research.

Disclaimer #2 : I was not a summer intern myself. However, I did work for a summer at the World Bank and I had a fantastic time. Disclaimer #3 : (for international students) I suspect that, depending on which type of VISA you have, you may face restrictions.

While the exact amount may vary a lot from one internship to another, some may pay as much as the equivalent of a year worth of PhD stipend… for just a couple of months of work. Doubling your income should relax a lot of the anxiety about money.

@amitabhchandra2 @TexasChildrens @BostonChildrens I owe my life to these achievements. I had an open-heart surgery at the age of 4 and lived a normal life after that. If it wasn't for science, I would have not survived past the age of 5.

If you think you want to give summer internships a try, find below some useful links. But before, let me share a few disclaimers: Disclaimer #1 : I currently work as a Scholar for Amazon, and I worked for Microsoft in the past. Both companies offer summer internships.
