I don’t exactly like night shifts but I think it’s probably worth it for the feeling of euphoria that comes with leaving the hospital on a sunny morning after your last one. Just don’t get that with a 9-5.

Did an elective Caesarean section list yesterday and it was SO LOVELY to do something positive and not related to Covid. People still have babies. Partners are still allowed in theatre. Anaesthetists still have great playlists. Scrub nurses still gently remind me what I’m doing.

I’ve always felt that no one ever really taught me HOW to do clinics, I just got chucked in at the deep end and have got a bit more confident with time. However my new hospital has TRAINING CLINICS with just 5-6 patients booked, the SHO sees everyone and the consultant sits in.

Since we’re all talking about messes I’d like to big up the best mess I’ve ever known, Lewisham Hospital. Always well stocked for food (including CHOCOLATE RAISINS) and a big pizza order every Sunday which bought together all the on call teams (the ortho F1 bleeped THEM ALL).

I recently experienced the highlight of my career thus far. Delivered a baby to ‘The Circle of Life’ played at full volume, at request of parents. Full on Rafiki/Simba vibes. Pressure was on because I had no idea how long the song was but we made it in time for the final chorus.

Ordered a salad for lunch today, and declined the options of chicken or prawns on top as I’m veggie...the chef was worried I’d been ripped off so sent out an extra bowl of chips for me instead. I have a lot of respect for that chef. Salad and chips...winning combo!

My dad is a bee man/mad scientist. He’s invented a little sensor that counts the bees in and out of his hive like some sort of club bouncer. He gets live updates to his phone. We’ve spent quite some time this afternoon watching them come and go and the lights flash accordingly.

Book 16 of 2024: ‘Getting Better’ by Michael Rosen. @MichaelRosenYes has been one of my heroes since I was in primary school. This is a lovely book, honest and touching. I really enjoyed the last section about his creative process and how he plays with words.
