Using AI to write is the best way to kill your growth as a writer.
It will help you write faster, but that speed will come at the expense of growth.
You won't reach the great heights if you do not have the patience to sit on an article and write it bit by bit for hours.
A reminder that submissions close in 4 days!
We're open for submissions, ESPECIALLY for creative Non-fiction and fiction.
Send us something enthralling and thought-provoking.

The story of Bolo Haram's terrorism is one that's slept upon by most Nigerian writers even though it's literally next door.

The "Show, don't tell" principle in a nutshell:

Imagery is everything in writing.
It's what separates an good writer from a poor one.
To a good writer, a sunset isn't just a sunset.
It's a sky engulfed in a blazing sea of fiery orange and soft, billowing pinks.
Are you in the middle of a writer's block?
Here are 15 creative prompts to help you get creative again!
1. Write a letter to your younger self with advice you wish you'd known.
We discovered this morning that some entries went to our spam box instead of our inbox 😬. We're reading them and sending feedback as soon as we can.

We asked our fiction editor for an advice to young writers. He said,
"The most important part of writing is actually the outline. No matter how sweet your idea seems, make an outline of it FIRST. Otherwise, you'll get stuck the middle of your work."

A recurring problem at our poetry readings are poems that, while well-written, feel derivative of established poets.
Writers, you can do better.
Read widely, gather inspiration, but don't be a copycat. Your unique voice is what makes your story sing!

Honestly, the storytelling is nothing like I expected✨. The neologisms, Ghanian politeness markers, Nigerian English style, and plot twists... This is one of the most beautiful stories I've read.
Vivid descriptions paint mental pictures. They make writing come alive.
The rusty swing creaked like an old ship in a storm, carrying memories of laughter lost in time.
👆That's vivid.
We asked one of our editors to give advice to young writers, and she said:
"Do not fear rejections. If I didn't get rejected in the early stages of my career, I wouldn't have been uncomfortable enough to seek for more growth."

""A boy is firearm or skylark, with less than a way to tell which is what"
This poem by our alumnus,

, is a haunting exploration of identity, violence, and resilience. Samba navigates the complexities of existence in a world of binaries.
The storm may rage, wind clawing at the windows, but dawn brings a promise. Even the most bruised sky eventually yields to a shade of sun. Hold on, you weary traveler. There's a quiet strength in the space between the raindrops.

University writing communities and workshops are highly underfunded. It's not that there's no money. Brands would rather sponsor fresher's party, fyb party, dinner night, etc than give a penny to a workshop.
Which is why so many writers workshops are barely hanging on a thread.
We're getting entries from Ghana, South Africa, and diasporan Africans. I'm feeling so excited reading the beautiful works of a diverse number of African authors ❤️

Lol! The first time I was hired as an editor, I wasn't qualified. I didn't the required degree, I wasn't even a graduate. My interviewer said they hired me because of all the applicants, I was the only one that knew how to use Google docs.
Those of you that see a job advertisement you know fully well you are not qualified for. But you go ahead to send your CV, what exactly are you expecting?

To all boys called Effeminate out there, don't ever feel ashamed of how you choose to express your masculinity. Paint your nails, make your braids, wave your hands, cross your legs. DO YOU!
So I started with Tomorrow I become a woman. The storytelling is so beautiful. It's not a complex novel, but its simplicity is what makes it alluring. I'm in page 116 now! Hoping to be done by dusk tomorrow 😌

It’s a new week!
I have a question for you, especially you that loves books.
Here is the question: Which fictional world from an African novel would you love to visit?
For me, it is “Americanah” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

The nature of Igbo language is highly metaphorical. It's why igbos are great storytellers
Only an Igbo man, instead of saying Don't kill your son, would say, "That child that calls you father, do not have a hand in his death". The way they speak English reflects their language
"I think if you start from the end, then we could get the depressing part out of the way and get to the good stuff when he still lived"
This piece got me into tears. I had to fight to read to the end. So sorry for your loss, Patrick ❤️
A year ago, my friend Steve passed away. And through mourning, I wrote a piece, that is now published in
@IseleMagazine
's "Grief" Issue.
I hope you can relate, and connect and feel whole with "Not... a eulogy". Thank you to Isele and the whole team🙏🏾❤️
So I just finished reading Tomorrow I become a woman. I have nothing to say other than
@aiwahannah
, you'll have to pay for the tissues I used while reading this.
I low-key wish we could get a sequel where Akin and Uju get married, against the wishes of the powerful Gozie.
13. Write a monologue from the perspective of someone experiencing self-doubt.
14. Write on the pressure to succeed and the fear of falling short.
15. Write a letter to a late loved one about a current challenge you're facing.
For example, instead of "Sarah was a tall woman with fiery red hair and eyes that sparkled with mischief." you can say,
"Sarah strode into the room, her fiery red hair bouncing with each confident step."

I've read some of his plays. I found them quite easy to understand, even though I admit he uses flowery language a lot. His essays were tough to crack tho

A poem about the Lekki toll gate massacre.
"When Oliloanya’s brothers spat him across the Atlantic/ his skull broke in two/ in three/.../ A river, his blood ran into us/Of his passing breath, we are drawn/ He festers in us, and we fester with him."
