Can’t sleep so—this is Maple (L) + her sister (R). We adopted our sweet girl from @ShenandoahSR in 2022 after my girls + I spent 3+ years persuading my husband to say yes to a dog. Maple was a long-awaited, deeply loved, and very precious addition to our family. (Her ears! 😍)

There was no non-mechanized means of egress at District Dogs other than the doors facing the flood-prone street. The only other way out was via an elevator, which isn’t safe if the building is flooded. There were no interior stairs to get to higher ground within the building.

This is so heartbreaking. This building had problems even during construction. It's probably a good idea for all cities to begin looking at 10-20 year climate change impacts projections before permitting new construction. Storms are becoming more intense and more frequent.

I appreciate efforts to create a school-to-jobs pipeline for OUC call takers, but these are classified as entry-level jobs (and paid accordingly). This is an essential public safety job that requires maturity and critical thinking. We need to recruit + pay workers accordingly.

Maple developed a strong bond with my girls and showed a lot of affection for them. In the mornings, one of the things she loved to do was run into their room, jump on the beds, and nuzzle their noses and lick their faces to wake them. She never wanted to be far from “her” girls.

She’s the last thing I think about before bed and the first thing I think about in the morning. There is no brief moment where I still believe she’s with us before reality pierces the veil of sleep. Reality forces its way in too quickly—like a flood. I just miss her so much. 💔💔

Oh. My god. I just realized that almost 10% of all fatal traffic crashes in 2021 occurred in ANC 5B. (3 out of 40) @DDOTDCDirector , I hope we can work together in 2022 to implement some of the many, MANY traffic calming requests this area desperately needs.

Life with Maple was filled with so much delight and wonder as we welcomed our playful little puppy into our family. Maple was like a younger sister to my kids, always getting into whatever mischief the kids found themselves in (and being a good sport about their antics).

Water at District Dogs would come in “through the wall, … the floor, and … out of the toilets and the sinks like geysers.” Apparently @DC_DOB thinks sewage-infested, flood-prone buildings are safe for humans + animals. This unit needs to be condemned + permanently boarded up.

And to be clear: I believe it’s absurd that we even have to request this meeting. It’s also absurd that OUC can’t answer its phones, properly classify calls, or accurately dispatch 1st responders. It’s also absurd that there was no safe means of egress in a reputed flood area.

For context, there are 44,130 children under age 5 in DC. By comparison, the city employs 36,700 District government workers. That workforce—also a “small portion of the population”—was apparently not too small to protect by requiring vaccines and masks indoors. But kids? 🤷🏼‍♀️

As DC lifts mask mandate, Nesbitt says, "The world is not necessarily set up for the unvaccinated anymore." I asked about protecting kids too young for vaccines. She noted kids under 5 are "small portion of the population" & said families take precautions to protect their kids.
