we were in Iraq in early 80's . Older generation of Iraqis could speak Hindi. Personally conversed with them as a child. was amazed and extremely jubilant to be able to speak in hindi in a foreign land.

Shankracharya was just an example. Ordinary people went on yatra from North to South and vice versa, still do. No English and no language problem. The language problem gets manufactured *after* English is imposed.
