There was a thread recently about how kids in the Cape Flats can tell the difference, from sound alone, between a bullet that’s missed and a bullet that’s hit a human body. But okay.
Been living with my baby sister full time for two years now.
Today my heart is full of gratitude because I realize that my best friend was in my home all along.
My entire heart.
What a miracle family is. ❤️
I live in the Joburg CBD in a big old apartment with loads of sunlight and old wooden floors in a gorgeous old building. I pay a fraction of what I would pay for the same place in Killarney. I worked in housing and evictions for two and a half years. Also in the CBD

And I’m telling you now - foreign nationals and the poor are not the enemy.
Joburg has all the ingredients of a truly incredible, inclusive city. We’re just led by the worst leaders.
The law on evictions has been settled for years.
🥰🥰🥰🥰 being South African is a flex
Allegedly this couple was taking their wedding photos when this group saw them and started singing traditional Xhosa wedding songs in celebration.
I bet they will not forget this😊🎊
Congratulations to them
Politicians ignoring the rule of law, court orders, their own internal policies and scapegoating others while they steal resources and funds is not the hill you want to die on.
Have some class solidarity. The ruling elite is NEVER on our side.
The city knows the requirements of the PIE Act. They know they have to consult. They know they have to create suitable alternative accommodation. There is funding available for that exact purpose.
They choose not to.
The Johannesburg Social Housing Company is mandated to build social housing for indigent people. The City has the real estate to do so. There are many vacant buildings all over the CBD waiting to be developed. I live here so I know they haven’t started.
The CBD has such amazing potential to be a starting point of real, grassroots economic development, wealth creation and social development.
It is centrally located. Within a km radius of my apartment there are four transport systems - Gautrain, taxis, Uber and buses.
@ongezwa_gwala
I don’t think the average South African understands just how dysfunctional and violent that area is and what traumas can emerge from it. I personally cannot fathom it. I saw a pic today of kids doing a drill coz there was a gunfight outside. They looked so relaxed.
@Khuze_Elikhulu
There’s this crazy gorgeous house in Hyde Park. Gorgeous Brutalist architecture. R8mil. That’s what I think about every time I see someone dropping that much money on a car.
Mind you I can afford neither. But anyways.
@smoicles
Men’s section! Slim fit. Very nb that you get slim fit. You won’t have to alter. Very important to fit them. If you’re a size 36 start with a size 39 mens. There’s one called Easy something. Very stretchy. Only ever bought from Woolies.
I run a thriving second hand clothing business with clothes thrifted a few blocks away.
The potential is endless. All they need to do is harness it. The budget is there. The policies exist. The infrastructure is available. The ruling elite is simply useless.
They don’t even have to do the work themselves. Most of the social justice organizations that work in the CBD have the data needed to tell the city where people are living and if they’re at risk.
Collaboration would be so simple. They choose not to.
Wits University is up the road.
There are fresh, healthy, cheap food and vegetables available everywhere. Every clothing, food or furniture store you could need is within walking distance.
There are up to date second hand textbooks sold on the street for R10.
The Joburg library. Events spaces. Clinics. Easy access to hospitals. A massive Home Affairs. Access to long distance buses and the airport right on your doorstep.
The property is affordable. The apartments (if you’re lucky) are massive and light filled and solid.
It’s incredibly multi-cultural. My neighbors are very patiently teaching me French and the radiologist neighbor offered to help me DIY my kitchen. The most incredible Chinese restaurant I’ve ever been to is a block away from John Vorster Square.
@Shezi_one
Like?! Your pelvic floor is fine sir. You’re not hovering between now and the afterlife trying to bring a baby into the world. All you contributed were a couple of swimmers. I’m here near death.
Nelson Mandela's ID book is among the items to be auctioned by his daughter Makaziwe to raise funds for a Mandela Memorial Garden in Qunu, Eastern Cape. After a two-year legal battle and objections from the SA government, she won the right to do the auction.
“There is not a single man on Earth who believes ‘not all men’.
Because if you really believed it, you would let your homies date your sisters. You don't. Becuase you know.
You would let your daughters go to sleep overs in other men's houses even if those mens wives were not
They don’t even have to use them particularly well - you’d have an urban, thriving, affordable, integrated, accessible and safe city that places people near economic opportunities, attracts investment, fosters childhood development and entrepreneurship,
Trash is simply not collected frequently enough. There aren’t enough bins. I don’t think there’s even a public school in the CBD despite there being hundreds of children everywhere.
If the City did their job and used their resources the way they were supposed to be used-
Addresses and remedies apartheid spatial planning. Gives people cushioning against the cost of living.
They don’t want to. And instead of holding them to account you turn on the foreigners and the poor, shooting yourself in the foot in the process.
@tanyajunghans
I was shocked to find out that they throw them into the laundry basket until laundry day. So they just stay in there with the other clothes. Percolating.
There is no visible policing despite a massive JMPD and SAPS police station a few kilometers apart.
Taxis park where they please and drive as they please so walking is dangerous and accidents happen often.
Amenities are not maintained and kept up.
It is unspeakably cruel to brutalize millions of people for hundreds of years and then claim you’re the great victims of that history.
Its better when you’re told you’re subhuman and deserve your subjugation. This attempt at gaslighting is demonic.
I think y’all need to tell us what this anger is supposed to look like. There was a march to Pretoria yesterday. Video clips of people fighting Denel executives. Service delivery protests. Didn’t we have another FMF protest this yr? What kind of rage are you looking for exactly?
This year someone randomly walked up to me and asked me for proof that I was South African like my ID or something. I’m dark skinned and Venda with an ambiguous accent. Any of those types of chats make me so uncomfortable.
What radicalised me against xenophobia was the 2008 xenophobic attacks in South Africa. I was just a dark skinned kid trying to go to school and I was met with “verification” tests at every corner to prove that I’m South African. Ducking and diving violence at every corner.

You only went away for sex? Was there no sex where you were coming from? Will the entire trip be pointless without the sex? Ahuna di museum? Restaurants? Picnic joints? Other ways of creating intimacy? I must feel bad while MY uterus is being torn apart? Ache.
The other day a man shot his wife dead as she reported him for abuse. Inside a police station. About a week ago was the anniversary of Uyinene’s murder at the Post Office. Today 11 men raped a 17 year old girl. A woman journalist was shoved about at a protest.
My lil sister finally agreed to be seen in public with her slightly un-cool big sis.

goes out to you kid. Still the most beautiful woman I know. ❤️

Like it was nothing out of the ordinary for them.
So if they say they’ve developed that ability as a response to the nightmare of the place they’re born into, I believe them.
I don’t know what a real bullet near me sounds like. Only hear it in movies.
Whole stretches of city smelling RANK.
“But there are no public toilets”.
We know. And yet women manage not to change the odour profiles of whole provinces and hold it in til they get home.
A maintenance case went all the way to the Constitutional Court of South Africa coz dude had just failed, after several court orders, to pay maintenance of a child he knew was his after he ordered about 9 paternity tests.
I have been shook ever since.
Your sons even quit their jobs to avoid paying maintenance. Men who’d rather starve themselves than raise their own flesh and blood. This is the calibre of men we’re told to “pick wisely” from Nkosi yam. 💀
Today was a lot. Between Nathaniel, Blake, Bheki Cele’s general and unending uselessness, a brand spanking new PPE scandal my tired is tired. It’s white people. It’s men. It’s police. It’s the ANC. It’s also COVID still. Yoh.
Say a prayer for ConCourt clerks who are sitting with a second high profile judgment today.
Bind the spirit of rebellious section breaks, whimsical transition headers, autonomous numbering, self determining spacing and invisible spelling and grammatical errors. Amen.
This blew up more than I thought it would. It was just a silly rant from a girl who REALLY loves her neighborhood and doesn’t wanna be forced to move.
Some responses to several questions:

Really need to implement my shopping ban but I saw this new set at Zara and it reminded me of these other looks I’d seen. Felt very Victoria Beckham-y. It is GORGEOUS. Colour. Fit. All of it.
I’m a size 36. This is a size M. Price of the set in the last pic. ❤️

The point we bhuti, is that a period cannot be an inconvenience to you when it’s me who is bleeding, vomiting and in pain or uncomfortable. For those three days at Gods Window, you’ll be fine. Your uterus is not trying to kill you.
My favorite random nature fact that I learnt this year is that dolphins like slapping sharks unprovoked. Just roll up, “shwaaTLHAAAAA” and then swim off.
For NOTHING.

It’s the wrong formulae for your baby. If they get sick then what? Also why didn’t he know already that his child drinks this particular one?
Children in Cape Town townships & Cape Flats can tell the difference between a gun fired in the air and the one that is fired and hit a person. Do you know how bad of a situation is if children are perfectly capable of knowing this? It's normalised

That’s not how you spell it.
Don’t talk down to me.
Elementary my eye.
My body not being available for your sexual pleasure because it is in pain and bleeding is not an inconvenience.
Your erection is not that important.
A woman is not a ca- yazin, yekela.
