When I was born in 1997, four years after Nora died, my dad was not proud of his father's Thorpe surname So he agreed that I could take my mum's surname, Crowther, on one condition - that my middle name would be Nora to preserve the memory of his mother's side of the family

From asking family& researching online, here's what I found (TW: disturbing images & a very long 🧵) Nora's father (my great-great-grandfather) was a Hungarian Jewish journalist called Joseph Sachse, born 1884 He changed his surname to Saxe in 1932 to disguise its Jewish origin

@wandbc Scaffolding went up summer 2023 and we were told they cleared items blocking the gutters. The issue was apparently resolved… Many months later we pushed the council to remove the scaffolding, replaster and attach the curtain rail. Stains remained all over the ceilings and walls

In Brussels in the 1930s, Nora's house became a refuge for revolutionaries fleeing repression in eastern Europe It was as part of this movement that she met my great-grandfather Camille Loots, a Belgian Jewish Trotskyist who fought in the Spanish Civil War

Nora joined the Belgian Socialist Youth movement, & the Trotskyists in 1934, before becoming secretary to Austrian socialist politician Friedrich Adler She supplied material for his famous pamphlet that exposed the falsities of Stalin's first Moscow Trial, which saw 16 executed
