@VicVijayakumar Lots of "rate limit" responses here but I don't think that's the best route here. These are async jobs. Assuming I get paid/job and i my server can handle writing 15k jobs to db, do it. Worker pools exist for a reason. Bonus points for per account pools to prevent noisy neighbors

Folks think I'm terrible at frontend dev. I'm not. I'm terrible at design and knowing what looks good 😅 Given mocks, I can code it up, make it responsive, a11y compliant, etc. Easy peasy. Code is easy. Design is hard (For me). Much respect to all the UI/UX designers out there ✊🏾

Whenever I do end up leaving Google, I think the top things I'll miss: - being able to plan trips around all the different offices worldwide - bidets with heated seats - being at companies large enough to have a 🇯🇲 ERG (unless I go back to msft, i guess)

All software engineers are self-taught. The only difference is what your launchpad looks like. You can jump a lot faster and higher with that foundational knowledge. Senior yr, when i looked at apps and realized I didn't know any of the tech mentioned, I was livid at my college.

Please don't lie in your resume about your experience with a language. If you don't know how python dicts and for loops work, don't (yet) list it as a skill and maybe don't ask for the interview to be in that language. 🥺

Case in point, I detest Java much more than I dislike react. But 1/3 of the code I write daily is Java because that's what *my* role/field required right now. Do the thing that gets you paid and mess around with whatever else you want.

I'll let y'all in on a secret. As an engineer you realize the code is the least important part. That's just implementation details. The bulk of my time is spent designing the thing, writing docs and getting it reviewed. Show me those Google docs/markdown skills 😂

You'd think this situation is unique but it's not! I once saw a stat that 60+% googlers had never used vscode. 30+% never heard of it. Many senior engs have never used git, much less the deluge of tools tech twitter argues about. But they're some of the smartest & highest paid 😅

@VicVijayakumar Huh... I've seen staff eng that do nothing except add themselves as reviewers on PRs and design docs. And staff engs that steal work from each other based on perceived potential impact. Rarely, if ever, I've seen this ideal staff+ that sees/anticipates problems and fixes them

I just tried @sourcegraph for the first time and I'm in tears. It's so good!!! Amazing search across public repos. Intuitive/powerful search features (filtering, regex). Great go-to-def, find impl, find refs. Lovely file UI (file symbols, commit history, etc).

Companies like them (and Microsoft) publish yearly diversity reports. They love touting their pay equality in these reports. But they only report base salaries, for which they keep tight limits. But that's literally only half our compensation. The gap persists with equity & bonus

💯 DSA can be a grind. And unless you're happy knowing that the preparation for the interview is almost completely divorced from the prep needed on the job, you'll have a miserable time studying DSA.

@codedbyval It may by misogyny in your case, but not always. Ask, if possible. When persons have said that to me, they've meant that my communication skills, social cues etc are better than what they think of for a stereotypical coder... I still take offense but could be worse I guess 😒

@davidfowl @doxla I think this needs to be appended to the original tweet. I find modern laptops more than capable. But being a developer doesn't automatically make you a power user. If one can easily afford both, sure. But something like the surface laptop studio meets majority use cases.

Most folks think about leaving their jobs after their stock vests or bonus is paid. For me, it's right before my on-call shift. 😤 I know it's gonna be bad but I'm never prepared because it's always horrible in a new way 😭

@davidfowl @doxla Mhm. But how many devs are running OBS and VS? Not saying the performance is on par. Just that a good laptop meets most workloads. Heck, I have a maxed out gaming laptop and I'm looking to downsize. All i need are ports, tons of browser tabs and vscode with remote dev/rdp 🤷🏾‍♂️
