If you have a chance, get out on a 400 meter track and do a single lap as fast as you can. Then reflect that Kiptum did that in 68 seconds 105.5 times in a row and in a post race interview suggested he has yet to hurt in a marathon.
Jacky already had an amazing story of perseverance, but decided to add to it by tackling 100 marathons in 100 days. She just completed number 81. I will be interviewing her on HPO Podcast Monday. Feel free to send over any questions you have for Jacky!
11 hrs 51 minutes - 100 Miles. It was my fourth fastest 100 mile, fourth fastest American 100 mile, and 15th in the World. I also hit just under 101 miles for 12 hours, which is the third furthest by an American. Not my best 100 by the clocks standards, but may have been one of
How cool would it be if most (all?) top trail talent showed up at Gary’s race next year instead of UTMB? I have never done UTMB (to be clear, not because of some moral superiority thing, it’s just not my preferred course type, but I had planned on going eventually). It would be
I would like to take the time now to say that
@CoastMtnTrail
are officially announcing our intensions of launching a BC race in direct competition with this event, in September 2024.
My fastest 100 mile / 12 Hour time was done at the Pettit Center back in 2019. Tomorrow morning at 9am Central I get the chance to run fast for 100 miles and see what this last training cycle produced.
Nearly six years... In 2013, I first tested the flat 100 mile waters with the goal of breaking the American Record at the Desert Solstice Track Invitational in Phoenix, AZ. Finishing in 11:47:04 gave me enough…
Believe it or not, this year’s 100 mile road champs had five gentlemen in the 80-84 age group category, with one having his debut 100 mile date back to 1982. It was a pleasure to see them all go to work for a while.
Unless presented with more context, this is a XXL sized overreaction by this account. Zach Miller is racing at the World Championships in this video. It’s not some neighborhood fun run.
Hi Zach Miller. Just tell you that you are a XL size idiot. This is disrespectful to the sport, to your country (which you misrepresent), to the volunteers, to the environment, to the rest of the runners and to yourself. You deserve not to be invited to any more races.

@JavelinaJundred
Nicole punched her ticket to the big one with 2nd place at the Bandera 100km!
@wser
is on the schedule for June! Congrats to
@courtdauwalter
for yet another mind blowing win, course record, and also entry into WSER.
Check this course profile. Nicole and I did the 50km trail race (run) this morning and it felt about how it looks! Basically constant hairpin turning, very short steep hills, mtn bike ramps, and berms. Never done a course quite like it.
If Jasmin does finish all five loops, cementing herself in history as the first woman to defeat the course, will this be performance of the year? It will mean we already have two huge marks on the board and it’s only March.
Online science bros can take a seat. Dana White stepping up and snatching the belt for bro science final boss. All others can fight over the lower levels. 🤣
I did an 86 hour water fast and i feel INCREDIBLE! Obviously i'm not a doctor, but i've been told by the experts that water fasting can help to significantly reduce the risk of cancer, alzheimers and a ton of other health issues.
Here's my conversation with Zach Bitter (
@zbitter
), ultramarathon runner and coach, who held multiple world records in the 100-mile run and is planning a run across the United States.
@AiremSmith
@GangsterHebrew
@BernieSanders
Another angle to look at this would be if folks getting $7.25/hr. now get $15/hr they will spend that money out of necessity to move out of poverty. This additional spending will put more demand on business to increase supply to meet increased demand.
I always find the "soreness" difference between flat 100s and trail 100s interesting. Trail is more complete destruction of the lower body. Flat picks a few spots, but hits them hard!
The windchill this morning north of Chicago was 47 below F. I triple layered and went out for 5 miles just to do it. I got to thinking about the craziest cold weather I have run in the past. I’ve had a few crazier outings than today when younger. What’s your craziest cold run?
When
@courtdauwalter
had to pull out of Hardrock earlier this year while leading the race, it made UTMB much more interesting. Not because there would be doubt, but because it was inevitable the UTMB course was going to get absolutely hammered.

Good read. Small scale local farms, and getting closer to our food systems. I would add well regulated/managed hunting practices for those willing and able.
@labajakalana
Even being charitable, I cannot get past this being a half baked take. He clearly was unaware there was a cooling bucket at the end of the table before the volunteer showed him. Lol! Why would he go through the trouble opening bottles if he was aware?
Embraced the rain storms yesterday at the Rocky Raccoon 50 Mile. What a wild day and crazy to consider how much the same trails can change with a few downpours 🤣 I managed to keep it together out there and finish 1st OA.
Nuts! That is an average pace of 4:08/mi. For fun, go to your local track and give one lap the best you have and enjoy comprehending Cheptegei doing that 12.5 times at just under 62 seconds each... 😯
Pretty cool video of Cheptegei’s bonkers 12:51 road 5K this AM.
He did it totally solo. No pacers.
The video is without commentary, so it’s just an intimate long watch of him grinding and flying alone.
This November marked my 12th year following a low carbohydrate nutritional strategy for my ultramarathon endurance lifestyle. Here are some takeaways from my experience:
- In the 12 years, my inputs have ranged from mostly plant based, to mostly animal based and everything in
2023 Javelina 100!!!
My goal at this year’s
@javelinajundred
was to give myself a chance to earn a golden ticket for WSER in June. I assumed this would require something just a shade below 13 hours. This is where I thought my “best case scenario” finishing time was after the
Considering the commanding way she won WSER. If Courtney goes WSER, Hardrock, UTMB 3x win/CR in what is just a touch past 2 months, I’m not sure there is a short stretch of racing in ultra that tops that on either men’s or women’s side. What are some other great 3 race stretches
Sorry I gotta ask… where are all the, “but how does
@MountainRoche
coach if he hasn’t done a 100 miler?” people at this morning? Now he has and can make a good argument for as good as anyone in history.
I think I'm going to retire from being a spreadsheet splits boi after estimating my Leadville finish time within 26 seconds 😂
Predicted finish time: 15:27:00
Actual finish time: 15:26:34

Congrats Phil! What a strong close and solid day. You deserved the win. I believed TH100 could produce a sub 11:30, and still do. I paced first half accordingly, and paid for it. Safe to say I didn’t have that in me yesterday, but thrilled to confirm my ankle is back!
Definitely a year I will remember. Honored to share

I’ve never negative split a 100 mile race before. To be honest, this was the hardest part about Saturday. When I went through mile 50 in 5:40:38 there was a seed of doubt that at best I’d PR. By the time I got to…
San Diego 100 Mile. What a day! I needed every mile essentially to win. I tried to be a bit more patient than normal in some of the early aid stations. It was going to be a cloudless day and I heard plenty of…
I had a really fun chat with
@MountainRoche
about his recent win and CR at Leadville 100 last Saturday. I will aim to get this one up ASAP. Topics included:
- Ultrarunning Community: have we figured it all out yet?
- David's background as a football player before pursuing running
Ludovic Pommeret (
@Hoka
) wins the 2024 Hardrock 100 in 21:33:08, an overall course record. “It was my dream. I dream all the day. The nightmare never came.”
Kilian Jornet set the previous overall course record of 21:36:24 in this clockwise direction in 2022.
Here’s our
Dr. Jason Fung (
@drjasonfung
) sat down to chat with
@SBakerMD
and me for Ep. 50 (Yeah, half way to triple digits) of Human Performance Outliers Pod. Check it out wherever podcasts are found.
Wow! So stoked for Alek! What a race holding steady all the way to the end. Way to raise the bar! Excited to Pass the WR on and witness the flat ultra 100 find new heights. Props to
@centurionrunner
for time/energy/$$$ to put on a 100 mile specific track. So cool! Speedy recovery
My prediction with gut training and 120+ carbs per hour. Some elites will do it successfully. Brands will market it. Average runner will try and blow out their drawers. New wave of low carb endurance will follow. People advocating for gut training and hyper fueling will complain
Courtney Dauwalter (
@SalomonSports
) wins the 2021
#UTMB
in 22:30:54. It’s the fastest time run by a woman on a full-length UTMB course. She finishes seventh overall.
Our pre-race interview with Courtney:
Javelina 100 training by the numbers:
- 20 Weeks
- 340 hours (300 hours run, 20 hours bike, 20 hrs sled push/pull)
- 33 hours mobility work
- 40 hours strength work
- 20 hours drills
- Total: 433 hours, 18.04 days
So, yeah, spending a day running 100 miles is not that long :)
Ready for jfk50mile today!!! It has been a fun year of racing and this iconic event will be so much fun to add to it. Have fun and best of wishes to everyone else lacing you their race shoes today! 👍🏃♂️

It is funny. The vegan movement grew and eventually some of it's vocal leaders began comparing eggs to cigs. As a result, the exact opposite diet gained momentum, and has now found the same level of peak insanity. Once a dietary tribe compares something to cigs, it is a sign
Eating fries is like smoking cigarettes!
Don’t believe me? Read this study…
Cooking with seed oils releases the same toxic chemicals found in cigarette smoke. (PMID: 30221162)
The same study explains that cooking with saturated fats does not release these toxic compounds.

I’m a firm believer that an early workout jump starts the day. Some more than others. If you had to pick one workout to jumpstart the day, which would you chose?
I can run an ungodly amount of miles and my sleep doesn’t increase much, but if I increase strength work, It seems I can increase my sleep time by 30-60 minutes.
Lots of ultramarathon runners would benefit from training for a marathon, or even a shorter than marathon endurance event. The intensity for a marathon for many is such that you have to be pretty well rounded with the endurance training inputs throughout the process. Once
I have been coaching my friend Charles for the past few months. Charles has a visual impairment, so I was stoked when he asked me to guide him. Today, I get to guide him at the California International Marathon! Go Charles!!!

Lol! Austin just canceled schools tomorrow because it’s going to dip below freezing tonight. Every student in the Midwest is collectively raising a middle finger and I can see it from here.

It seems to me, if you move far enough to either side of a spectrum you will find a group that ends up eating itself. This seems true for nutrition, politics, and just about everything I can think of.
