Honestly ppl shouldn't be saying anything about "peaceful protest" to leverage respectability politics because Standing Rock was the epitome of a peaceful protest movement and water protectors were still brutalized.
Lakota medicine man, arrested for practicing traditional sweat lodge healing ceremonies by Father Francis M. Craft, 1880's. Photographed here in iron shackles, ball and chains.
I feel like the fact that Maslows Hierarchy of needs was developed by Indigenous ppls is purposefully glossed over to deflect from the fact that capitalistic societal structures are set up to deny everyone of their most basic physical, psychological and spiritual needs.
The reason settlers can place so much value on "pets" while investing in structures of colonialism which destroy the ecosystem and in turn animal kingdom, is because their ideas of love are about ownership and captivity. And that's the tea on that.
The way capitalism has disconnected humans from nature certainly has distorted our understanding of just how much the natural world operates on reciprocity.
Fetishization is a tool of colonization not a "compliment"

Ppl who never been through homelessness are blissfully unaware of how much work is entailed in staying afloat and navigating the system to abate criminalization and the ability to ever obtain housing again.
Erasure of Indigenous ppl has been so successful in convincing dominant culture that Natives are mythological creatures that White women in a dystopia narrative are prioritized over the thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women

Now that you've gotten the costume based on a fictional dystopia removed, can y'all muster up enough backlash to do something about the site's entire "Indian Costumes" section?
Imagine how privileged u have to be to assume that COVID is a conspiracy because u don't know anyone impacted while there are entire Native and BIPOC communities that are being ravaged by the death tolls.
Stop shaming Black and Indigenous peoples who have children "out of wedlock" and realize that the marriage industry is nothing but state sanctioned surveillance and imposition of colonizer patriarchy/ gender norms.
Something i learned from live tweeting standing rock is how important documenting is because when the state and police depts are culpable, things start vanishing.
Native ppl do not get college for free even though education was promised in the treaties for the stolen land everyone in this country is occupying. All Native students in the US (enrolled or not with proven Tribal ties) should get university loans forgiven.

Alyssa Milano: "the MAGA hat is the new white hood"
Also Alyssa Milano:
*Continues selling shirts for a team that maintained White Supremacy in NFL by being the last team to integrate.
I love how ppl have just stopped being afraid about vandalizing and dismantling colonizer representations like the Columbus statues. I hope to see that extend to other celebrations of colonizers.
Remind white people that they are illegal occupiers on Native land

Heard that Jillian Michaels was invited to an event with Natives and she threw out frybread and shamed Natives for it. This lady is fatphobic colonizer trash.

@JillianMichaels
on Lizzo: "Why are we celebrating her body? Why does it matter? Why aren't we celebrating her music? 'Cause it isn't gonna be awesome if she gets diabetes."
Let me remind u that during Standing Rock elders were dragged out of Tipis and prayer circles to get arrested. Ppl were strip searched thrown in dog kennels and numbered. Water protectors received injuries and PTSD that they will be impacted by for the rest of their lives.
I would like to see this petition reach 10,000 signatures. Will u help Indigenous women in rejecting the colonizers gaze and mass produced fetishization? Please sign and share!
It was pointed out the whole time and the only reason why Native ppl don't constantly bring up the hypocrisy is cause many of us know how "peaceful" in actuality is irrelevant when you are BIPOC, also because we are aware of how that's been used to dehumanize Black ppl.
Just a reminder that the US government requires Ndns to be granted permission for eagle feathers to practice spirituality and religion that was illegal until 1978, (when IRFA was passed) but non Native "revivalist" cults continue to colonize regalia of various Indigenous Nations.
Pride NYC. Having just finished marching with the Indigenous two spirit group, these people emerged. What tribe are you from?, I asked. —We just dressed up for Pride, they replied. It’s just a costume.
@NativeApprops
would have had a field day.
#culturalappropriation
Being poor is like forever living in deficit. Privileged folks like to compare and say "I have student loan debt" like that's the same thing. But being poor is having debt on top of debt. Like being buried in a hole deeper and deeper that u can't get out of.
“Land back” shouldn’t just be asking Natives to assimilate and repurchase land. Ownership gotta be transferred from national parks and national monuments.
Stop with the "dream catcher" tattoos. If you're not Ojibwe or one of the tribes that have picked up the dream catcher from cultural exchange its appropriation and erasure of its specific cultural origins.
So miss me with the respectability politics and preaching the "correct" way to do things. Tribal sovereignty is still valid regardless of whether non Natives decide to legitimize it.
Instead of focusing purely on theoretical aspects of "cultural appropriation" i think we need to be more unapologetic about recognizing the fact that descendants of colonizers are getting corpses of groups their relatives starved, displaced, imprisoned and killed tattooed on them
And for people who still want to argue about by arguing the correct way to protest is lobbying and legislation, there were Native ppl who did that while this movement was happening.
Can u imagine how much people could actually be mobilizing to address global imperialism and colonialism if Native ppl weren't having to focus on these stereotypes, mascots, and all visual expressions that glorify colonialism and Ntv genocide?
I don't know who needs to hear this but if you are an urban or displaced Indigenous person you are valid. No matter how many folks juxtapose experiences to yours to make themselves or others feel valid. Your struggle is just as real and im rooting for you ❤
I want to see ppl seize properties with the same energy that the guy who was hoarding money and hand sanitizer was tracked down and forced to donate it to community.
"The victim card" isn't real. The individuals who weaponize it against Indigenous ppls are just exposing their view that Native genocide isn't grievable.
My Tribe has a film called We Are A Horse Nation and theres parts where they talk about the ways horses been colonized so we have to repair our relationships. Def in support of this and something I view as intergenerarional healing for our Black relatives ❤️
UPDATE: Brianna Noble just launched a GoFundMe for horseback riding for underprivileged youth.
"Horseback riding's phenomenal motivational and therapeutic qualities are often out of reach. At Humble, we are removing these barriers."
The irony that ppl acting surprised by what's happening at the border are the type to normalize the Anti Indigenous stereotypes in the US that are currently being leveraged to criminalize Indigenous asylum seekers.
Imagine thinking White supremacy and colonialism will be dismantled by everyone having to post a disclaimer coddling White passing / light skinned ppl everytime they want to challenge power dynamics.
Let it be known that Dior is not "being accused of cultural appropriation" as the media keeps trying to spread for damage control PR.
Dior is being rightfully checked for its proliferation of eugenics and xenophobia.
And this country has a history of this: see all of the broken treaties. In 1870 Oceti ppl were shamed and called redskinned parasites when they traveled to dc to lobby for rations promised in the treaties because ppl were starving to death
My family doesnt know our Native name because my relatives had it beaten out of them in boarding schools and replaced with a scottish name. Stop speaking on things you know nothing about and trying to silence Indigenous ppls.
@KnikCage
@danny_mangoes
@hayBEARS
@SarahTaber_bww
I'm of Scottish descent. It was once illegal for my ancestors to wear tartans; now, everyone does. I'm not offended; why should I be? There are plenty of valid reasons for the Scots to hate on the Anglish.
When u continually express that something is harmful and ppl turn around and do it anyway that's them testing your boundaries and trying to push u to retract them.
Seems the only time settlers care about bringing up "peaceful" Natives is to tokenize us, fuel lateral violence, to shut down criticisms of mascots, genocide and injustice, to maintain the violent status quo.
So at any point of this anti gun movement are we going to talk about westernized settler conditioning like cowboys and Indians that glorifies gun violence against Natives?
The fact that ppl keep focusing purely on the over harvesting aspect over colonizer consumption of sacred plants (such as sage), is why settlers and their corporations will continue to commodify spirituality with impunity
Non Natives want to keep pretending that Native people rejecting settler colonial tropes is about "being offended" instead of structural power and erasure.
BREAKING: Ariana Grande sues Forever 21 for $10M for look-alike ad campaign. “The resemblance is uncanny and Forever 21’s intent was clear: to suggest to the viewing public that Ms. Grande endorsed Forever 21, its products, and was affiliated with Forever 21.”
@wbz
So apparently white women with ties to
#spunkysquawboutique
are now arrogantly announcing their niche industry on racial slurs and mobilizing. So too should we.
There is a whole ht (
#BuyNative
) to make it easy for ppl to find Native brands and artidans. There is no excuse to support settler industry knock offs over authentic creations.
So ppl in my mentions telling me to be grateful because Standing Rock brought awareness, I am well aware. But knowing that is not enough when I know my relations are actively living an ongoing fight for our sacred lands and resources.
If ppl are ready for the convo about Mt Rushmore perhaps now would also be a good time to remind ppl about the link between resource extraction, architecture and real estate. For example a lot of those huge buildings down in St Paul are made with marble.
When I say colorism I'm speaking to the hierarchies that benefit whiteness. So idk why lightskinned/ white passing ppl are saying they suffer from colorism. Isn't that contradictory like reverse racism?
Non Native people should not be selling and profiting from dream catchers. Mass producing and Commodifying Native cultural symbols is an extension of global systems of power like colonialism and capitalism.
