Just popping up to say hello! (Hi!! How’s everyone been??) and let y’all know that my book NOTABLE NATIVE PEOPLE: 50 INDIGENOUS LEADERS, DREAMERS, AND CHANGEMAKERS FROM PAST AND PRESENT is available for preorder! Ah! In stores 10/5!
Just a reminder: the system in what is currently known as the US isn’t “broken.” It was designed by male white supremacist slaveowners on stolen Indigenous land to protect their interests. It’s working as it was designed.
For everyone who is appalled by this (you should be)—just also know that this is the model used on Native reservations. Still. Today. If you’re wondering what the health impacts would be, we have hundreds of yrs of data.
The news out of Portland is really terrifying. I keep thinking about Standing Rock and how they practiced all of this on the protectors in 2016 (and internal documents showed they were using it as “training” for future uprisings).
Lewis and Clark: WE WILL DISCOVER THIS UNTAMED WILD LAND B/C WE ARE MIGHTY
Native folks: Oh, you want to get over there? Here’s a detailed map. We’ll tell our cousins you’re on your way.
Lewis and Clark: WE ARE THE FIRST MEN TO NAVIGATE THIS LAND ALONE WE ARE THE BEST.*
"Monumental doesn't fully cover the importance of this discovery. This is easily the best-preserved of the Native American maps drawn for Lewis and Clark, and represents the most important discovery in the Lewis and Clark world" since 55 letters by Clark.

: "You don't just come into this country with low skills, low education, not understanding the language and come into our country because someone says it makes them feel nice. That's not what this country is based on."
@WattersWorld
NYC hospitals have just banned any support folks, including partners, for people in labor, meaning they will have to give birth completely alone, & partners will have to miss the birth of their babies. Someone very close to me is due in about a month, and I'm so worried for her.
Because the jokes come at the expense of Native peoples. They're making fun of Warren by drawing upon racist stereotypes and tired tropes that don't actually hurt her, because she's not Native. They instead further marginalize Natives, & show us what you really think of us.
So in the last 7 days: my partner and I decided to cohabitate ❤️, I won a big fellowship💰, I bought my first condo🏠, and today just found out the results of my surgery were great and I’m cancer free🔬. What. A. Week. 😭
I know a lot of white and non-Black folks are looking for readings/resources right now, and I'd just like to offer that my Intro to Critical Race Theory grad course from 2017 is still online (and free), with all the readings linked:
One more point: there is a long, long history of the Catholic Church aiding in Indigenous genocide and forced assimilation. From the CA mission system to catholic Indian boarding schools and everywhere inbetween.
My entire TL is talking about a Native person for the first time that I’ve ever seen. Even during
#NoDAPL
. Please don’t let this be the last thing you tweet about Indigenous folks, let it lead to more advocacy and change.
Damn. My across-the-hall dorm neighbor freshman year worked for the state department six years later and I had to be interviewed for her background check. It was an *internship*.
These incidents are not new for Native folks. They’re part of larger systemic problems that stem from ongoing settler colonialism. Allow Native writers, reporters, and community members illuminate that context and nuance for you.
My dearest
@QueerEye
I love you so so much but the “spirit animal” thing in S3E7 is super disrespectful to the Native nations and traditions that concept comes from.
Note to news outlets using my tweets in your articles: I'm not "of Cherokee descent" or "part Cherokee" or "has Cherokee ancestry"--I *am* Cherokee. I am a citizen of the Cherokee Nation.
Also...you could pay me to write for you instead.
I can’t stop thinking about SCOTUS effectively blocking every rez Native from voting in ND. And the ICWA decision in TX that called it an illegal race-based law. And Mashpee losing their trust land b/c they didn’t fit a 1930’s definition of “Indian”. All in the last month.

*this land is not mine or yours, it wasn’t made for you and me, it was and is stolen Indigenous land. But I will work to be in good relation with those whose land I occupy and make sure that we continue to welcome immigrants and refugees in a good way as relatives.
I’m in the midst of supporting my close friends through an awful, heartbreaking tragedy so I don’t have the capacity to really even think about anything right now. But center and listen to Native voices on the MAGA hat boys.
Remember when this child sued CNN and Washington Post for like $275 million because they ruined his life and he’d never be able to work or have a life after their coverage?
So the interesting thing about the Land O' Lakes logo is they changed it in February. The stores haven't had the Indian for almost 2 months...and no one noticed or cared.
Psst
@AOC
: “Nation of immigrants” erases Indigenous peoples and descendants of enslaved Africans. Wall is still bad, racism is still bad, just remember we’re not all immigrants.
“Build a wall of steel, a wall as high as Heaven” against immigrants.
- 1924 Ku Klux Klan convention
We know our history, and we are determined not to repeat its darkest hour.
America is a nation of immigrants. Without immigrants, we are not America.
It’s not that they’re not “widely accepted.” There is *NO* federally recognized Tribal Nation in the US that will accept an ancestral DNA test as proof for citizenship.
DNA tests are not widely accepted as proof of tribal citizenship — in part because the DNA could not show a specific tribe, only some genetic markers from Native people — and are more unreliable for Native Americans than for other ancestral regions.
And I hope Native folks are taking care of themselves too, these videos are so hard to watch. Each new angle brings more pain. Sending everyone love. ❤️
I may regret sharing this in this context—but for all the “what is ‘critical race theory’ and why is it trending?” folks, my Intro to CRT course from 2017 is still online, with most articles/books linked in PDF.
I saw Black Panther tonight. I may or may not have started crying at several times when it was completely inappropriate because the idea of a truly decolonized indigenous place was just hella overwhelming.
For the Native community:
1879-1970 (and later): Gov’t boarding schools. Indian babies as young as 4 forcibly removed from their homes, separated from their families for months or years at a time, had their culture and language stripped from them.
(1/3)
The separation of children from parents is something that happens in Gilead ( handmaids tale ) and Auschwitz. This is should not be happening in America. Disgusting
The piece of the Warren video that is hard for me is the entire section of folks defending her hiring. They say “her ethnicity was not a factor, she was an incredible teacher.” “Her race was not a factor, she’s brilliant.” Etc. It makes them feel mutually exclusive.
I don’t even have words to talk about the removal of the Washington Racial Slurs yet. I’m thrilled, relieved, exhausted, sad, and hopeful all at once. I didn’t think I’d see it in my lifetime. But let me be clear:
These stories happen every year and I am enraged more and more. ESPECIALLY for Oklahoma. Every high school in what is known as the US is on Indigenous land. Let Native students wear their regalia. It’s the bare minimum you can do.

Hi, um,
@zoom_us
? Is your platform prepared for practically every college class in America to be using it? Simultaneously? Asking for a whole lot of friends...
I just sat a coffee shop for 10 minutes listening to two undergrads painstakingly try to compose an email to a faculty member inquiring about a waitlist process for a course before I had to jump in and save them.
So the fact that “Sauvage” is on some “we are the land” BS is not surprising, but as always I find it deeply disturbing when brands force Native people to make the choice between stereotypes and misrepresentation, or utter invisibility.
Resolution for settlers in 2019: Listen to Indigenous folks. Actually listen. You've got a lot to learn, and that's ok. Be humble, realize you've got work to do, and listen.
😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️ ᏩᏙ (thank you)
@lizzo
! This is a hella old tweet but I just saw it and you deserve a late shout out cause this solidifies your awesomeness forever.
The term “spirit animal” is offensive to First Nation and indigenous tribes but look girl I love that u feel like I’m ur inner self! LOVE URSELF! *Muah* 😘
As a Native woman, every time I see "Pocahontas" or "Lie-awatha" or "chief" jokes or smoke signals or tomahawks or headdresses or trail of tears references, it makes me realize how close to the surface and accessible these stereotypes are--for liberals and conservatives alike.
My tribal citizenship was a factor in my hiring. As it should be. I represent my nation & Native ppls in this space & we wouldn’t have a voice otherwise. But I’m also a great teacher. Hardworking. Have degrees from top colonial institutions. Publish research. Win fellowships. Etc
Hi everyone, I’ve been writing a blog called “Native Appropriations” for almost 10 yrs. I’ve been following Depp’s transgressions since 2012. I’ve seen it all, and nothing you throw at me to “stump” me is going to work. 😂 There’s 300+ posts for you here:
Tonight I walked into the brewery down the street with my dog, and the bartender excitedly said, “Mochi! Hi! Let me get you one of the treats you like!”
Friends, I have never been in the brewery before. Guess I know where my partner is when I’m out of town...😂
Judge’s reasoning? “The federal courts are unanimous in their judgment that it is highly important to preserve the status quo when elections are fast approaching.” Really? Changing to a residential street requirement right before the election wasn’t deviating from the status quo?
Last thing before I sign off for a bit: you can critique DNA tests. You can critique misunderstandings of tribal citizenship. But saying someone is not Native because of their appearance is not the critique you should be going for. Tribal enrollment is not phenotype based.
It implicitly suggests that faculty hired when race was a factor are somehow less qualified. That she was a “real” hire based on her talent and merits. Considering what is going on with the Harvard affirmative action trial today, this is a harmful narrative to perpetuate.
These "jokes" show me that most Americans don't think of Native folks as your neighbors, your professors, your friends, or your fellow citizens. You think of us as nothing more than stereotypes and punchlines. We don't actually exist.
Grateful for the folks who organized and protested to make this happen—it wasn’t just the school district deciding to do the right (obvious) thing. Anti-indigeneity is rampant in US colonial schools.
I’ve always felt like the Dothraki were portrayed like the (white gaze version of) Indigenous people in Westeros and damn did they prove me right tonight. Just...got rid of them. All. In the first 10 min. Totally disposable. 😒
#GOT
When we implore everyone to wash their hands, let's remember that there are 1.5 mil ppl suffering from "plumbing poverty," no access to running water (map). This doesn't even count the people whose water has been shut off because they couldn't pay. Can't wash hand with no water.
For non-Black academics feeling "lost" as to what you could be doing right now: Use that library access, make a google doc, create resources. If your teaching doesn't include issues of race and racism, time to start. If you "don't know enough"--consent to learn in public.
Since the "Native Americans were immigrants too" crew is back, thread w/links on why the land bridge theory is BS. Also, again, the US has only existed for 242 years. "Documented" indigenous history on these lands is 13,000+ yrs, our oral histories stretch since time immemorial.
The BS theory (ha) is rooted in Christian theology, eugenics, and racism--not much real science. Remains have been discovered over and over that break the timeline. Googling "Bering Strait theory" gives lots of alternate perspectives (not being facetious):
So today had some big news that only means anything to other academics: passed my reappointment review, got reappointed for four more years. Woo! Onward toward tenure! Super grateful for my amazing supportive chair and department colleagues for guiding me through. 🥳
In summary: I’ve been on Johnny Depp’s case since at least 2012. He’s not Native, he’s not a friend to Indian Country. Dior has also been on the appropriation train since forever. Galliano literally put ghost dance designs on dresses:
Confession: I deleted the twitter app off my phone to try and be more productive, and instead I’ve just been logging in on safari, doing the two factor authentication (every. time.), and enduring the awful mobile web version. I have not been more productive.
So a small interaction, but another reminder the hidden curriculum exists, that faculty need to be real people to students, that students need to be given more credit, and clarity around expectations is everyone's friend.
#Welcomebacktoschool
Seems like the problem wasn't that you were attached to the logo and it harbored nostalgia for you, the problem apparently is Native folks speaking out.
“A study out this year, found that marginalized professors spent twice as much time mentoring, recruiting and ‘serving on various task forces,’ than their White male counterparts.”
Mixing and borrowing is great when it's done in an equal power relationship. When one group (Natives) is still experiencing colonization and had their spirituality banned by law until 1978, "borrowing" spiritual practices isn't benign.
The full video shows Nathan Philips trying to de-escalate a brewing situation that had the potential to turn even more ugly. He approached with good medicine and a song, and was met with sneering hatred and tomahawk chops.
Tonight at Muay Thai:
Pad holder/partner dude: So what do you teach?
Me: *jab-cross* Native Studies
Him: So are you, like, Native?
Me: *back leg kick* Yeah.
Him: How much?
Me: *MASSIVE CROSS WITH ALL THE FORCE OF THE ANCESTORS THAT ROCKS HIM BACKWARD* ...Enough.
Sorry we're not all docile and silent like your beloved Indian Maiden. It's just butter. Tastes the same with or without the racism. Maybe you should stop being so sensitive?
I’m fairly certain that wasn’t what the campaign was going for. They’re trying to demonstrate she didn’t “use” her heritage to get ahead. But by even entertaining the narrative means you give weight to the idea that minority hire=less qualified.
Almost a decade since my first post about “hipster headdresses” at music festivals,
@sfoutsidelands
has banned headdresses! I’ll take it. Thanks for the shout out
