@wlwspoiler
Makes me think of those weirdos who would proudly claim Bruce and Dick being shipped together “used to make headlines” and the headlines in question were claiming Bruce was representative of the stereotype that gay men are predatory 😭
@jasonsmomager
They saw the Lego movie and decided that that was Joker’s personality across the board instead of being a singular iteration of the character meant for kids 😭
I feel so bad for Captain America fans because there are extremely well-written and nuanced stories with those characters and they knew from the beginning that the odds of those stories being properly adapted and treated with respect were nonexistent with the military involvement
I don’t know how to break this to you but Billy Kaplan’s Jewishness has always and will always come before his status as a queer character considering his surname is literally Kaplan
Saying “some people” when you mean Jews who are understandably upset a character who is Jewish before he is queer is being played by a gentile is crazy
You are not a fan of the character if you don’t respect his Jewishness and want for it to be represented the way it should be. How are you going to call yourself Wiccan Updates when you view a core aspect of his character as optional.
Billy Kaplan will still exist in the comics. He will exist in the MCU. Heck, he'll exist soon in Marvel Snap. I'll still keep you updated on him across all media as I always have. If you prefer one or the other that's ok. If you are excited for both, that's ok too.
Marvel Studios was founded by Avi Arad, an Israeli-American who served in the IDF, and continues to produce films for the company. The only thing that surprises me here is that Sabra didn’t make an appearance sooner.
Reminder not to share that Hulk comic in response to the Sabra casting because the comic takes the “it’s because of religion” and “why can’t you guys just share” approach to an ongoing genocide
Billy Kaplan I’m sorry you’re being played by someone who can never understand what it’s like to be in your shoes and there’s now a stain on your character that meant so much to your queer Jewish fanbase
We’re comparing proud Jew Jacob Kurtzberg being drafted during WWII and suffering frostbite so bad that they initially wanted to amputate both of his legs to Tom King willingly taking a break from comics to plan the invasion of Iraq and then quitting to write his debut novel…?
Also it’s better that people who served in the military write comics who are Anti-war than people who write comics who didn’t serve in the military that are pro-war. Take for example Jack Kirby VS John Bryne, and Tom King VS Mark Millar.
Not-so-fun fact! Other survivors and I spoke about how much Kate’s story meant to us during a support group and recommended it to others there, who were excited to see her in the MCU.
Only for it to be deemed that our stories have to be changed for palatability.
dear billy kaplan, i am so sorry that i was not the casting director. if i was the casting director, you would have been jewish. given an actor who stands a chance at pronouncing yiddish and hebrew terms without a dialect coach.
You might as well stop reading comics as a whole because Jews built the industry from the ground up and your favorite characters and stories in the medium have like an 80% chance of being the pride and joy of a Jewish creative
While we’re discussing the Marvel boycott (which does include comics), I’m seeing people dive into DC instead but I don’t think that’s advisable. It may not be on the list, but the upcoming Superman film alone has zionists in the cast.
I’m going to choose to ignore that you’re equating Judaism and zionism for a second: you do not care about Palestinians if you only bring it up to dunk on others during online “discourse” and you need to work on your language surrounding it.
“genocidal enabler” are you twelve.
Most insane take I’ve seen during this mess has been the claim that they didn’t cast a Jewish actor to play Billy because it “would’ve sent the wrong idea” because Judaism =/= zionism aside, they’re releasing the trailer of the film with Sabra as a central character TODAY?
Someone, completely ignoring that Billy’s actor doesn’t know how to put on a kippah: He can gasp as effeminately and as gayly as he wants and wave his painted nails around in a tribute to those who came before us because someone shared a panel where he did a Sailor Moon reference
Gonna ask the people this: what takes do you have that you think are OBJECTIVELY right? Things that you would stand by, not just as your opinion, but as provable fact?
I can’t believe we’ve only had two Jewish actors playing Jewish characters in comic book adaptations and one is a zionist playing the monstrosity that is Sabra like the bar is on the floor and OH MY GOD ITS ANDREW GARFIELD WITH A STEEL CHAIR
They should’ve been more polite, but please email your local bookstore instead. Or ask to speak with a manager immediately. I’m a bookseller and it puts us in a beyond awkward position when we aren’t even the ones who decide if we can carry your book.
I just went into a bookstore, bought a book, then asked “hey I’m a local author, would you be interested in carrying my book?” and the way she brushed me off SO QUICK, asked no questions, wouldn’t even make eye contact with me 😭😭
I hate it here because a Game of Thrones fan will be like “look how adorable these two are, they’re so in love” and then you’ll look the characters up and it’s the most convoluted court case you’ve ever witnessed
The reason why Rogue fans can’t meet in person is because there’d be over a dozen people with dyed bangs standing in the same area and normal people would think we were a cult
Designs of female characters in comics in the 80s and 90s will make you fall to your knees and scream at the heavens because they’re never going to look that good ever again
No because I really could make an entire extended document about the military propaganda in American comics but I don’t have the heart nor the time to do so currently. I don’t think people realize just how deep it goes.
Editor-in-chief of Marvel is a white man who was exposed for and admitted to pretending to be a Japanese man for years to get around company policies involving the employment of diverse authors to write diverse stories. You should not be shocked by a lack of morality here.
A thread of comic characters I headcanon as having some variation of bipolar disorder for disability pride month, most with actual canon reasons and others just because I feel like it would spice things up around here.
Yeah it’s not like Billy having very proudly Jewish and supportive parents was extremely meaningful to the queer Jewish fans the character stands for or anything
Same thing happened with Janet van Dyne. PG-13 rating in the MCU can show kids war profiteering but can’t do a base level depiction of domestic abuse as an origin story and instead opts to erase the backstory completely.
Imagine what we’d get accomplished if you guys were talking about Billy Kaplan not being played by a Jewish actor with the same ferocity as you are defending that dramatic little gasp in these comments
So many people complaining he’s too camp and a stereotype like… some gay men act like this… sorry if it’s giving the masc 4 masc bros a bad rep but get a grip 😭 I’ve always read the character as a bit camp so idk doesn’t seem too different ??
Lots of assumptions going on here for the sake of defending an actor who doesn’t know you exist and would probably be freaked out by the “Joe Locke’s World” thing in your location idk
@lavfeysun
Jewish people don't care if the actors who play them and tell their stories to the world are actually Jewish themselves, they're smart enough to know they're actors. The representation they want is already portrayed by the actor, that is what matters, not the actor's religion.
Dunking on Steven Universe because of the redemption aspect of the series is so tiring. SU is a deeply Jewish series and the very redemption concept utilized is Teshuvah. Characters admit their wrongdoing, express regret and are given a second chance.
Guy going through something that completely changed his life by no choice of his own vs some dude taking a vacation from writing for some casual war crimes

I’ve encountered MANY between here and Tumblr over the years who believe any writing that deviates from that depiction is OOC.
Going anywhere with a boomer is such a risk because if they encounter anyone within their age range you’ll end up taking a 10 minute side quest with unskippable dialogue and god forbid they actually know the person beforehand
I don’t care if it’s your favorite book ever and you think everyone needs to read it, you NEED to tell people if that book contains highly triggering content when recommending it to them.
Comparing Jace in S1 to S2 is so funny because you can tell Harry Collett went home like “when I come back to this set I have to have the best posture and most luscious hair ever or get dragged all over again”
How many teenage girls do you think grew up with a Patsy Walker fixation and were absolutely pissed when they had to start reading superhero comics to get their fix
Trigger warnings in books are very considerate and should be appreciated. They’re on a separate page at the beginning of the book specifically so you can skip it if you, for whatever reason, view such a thing as a list of spoilers.
Sometimes I think about this and get so sad because Damian and Jon deserved to grow up together and be there for each other’s growth as a pillar of support
“another tweet about GoT shipping how original” fuck off I just found out Aemond massacred Alys’s family and she’s a prisoner of war and I have never seen anyone mention this before when I feel like it’s pretty relevant information. I feel insane
Avengers: War Across Time (2023) is so painful for me because I spent the whole time going “it should be me… not him” whenever Janet and Hank interacted
