@JingruiM along with @Saurabh41288505 then showed that this pathway is involved with the BJR (reduced heart rate, blood pressure, breathing). This was in part done by developing the use of the workhorse of cardiology, ultrasound imaging with optogenetics (opto-US).

Bidirectional manipulation of the hypothalamic periventricular zone with chemogenetics had a push–pull effect, with inhibition leading to longer syncope periods and activation inducing arousal, without altering heart-rate dips. Mice became zen-like with longer syncope!

It is generally accepted that fat tissues “talk” to the brain via secreted hormones. Our amazing student @yuwang , co-mentored by @liye_tsri , discovered that somatosensory neurons innervating adipose tissue act as a break to counteract sympathetic activity.

What do #mechanosensitive ion channels do in plants? We show that #PIEZO in #Arabidopsis is required for roots to penetrate hard surfaces. Congrats to @MousaviSAR who drove this project through many obstacles and survived as the sole plant guy in the lab.

Laser doppler flowmetry in collaboration with the Kleinfeld lab revealed cerebral blood flow reduced. Interestingly, completely different parameters like brain activity reduction, an iconic eye-roll, mice falling over, blood flow reduction were tightly correlated. Blew our minds!
