It is with unspeakable sadness and shock that I reflect upon the unexpected passing yesterday of Ron Duman, a beloved husband and father, a leader in the field of psychiatric neuroscience, and a dear and close friend and colleague of mine for >3 decades.
Mount Sinai's new BioMedical Laureates Program will add 20 Black or Latinx faculty to our basic and clinical science enterprise over the next five years. This will transform our campus and the impact and reach of our work. We could not be more excited about this new initiative.

Paul Greengard was a paradigm-shifting scientist who changed fundamentally the way we understand cell signaling. He was uniquely generous and was like a second father to so many of us. An end of an era. He will be missed.
I am especially honored by this recognition and want to thank the many PhD students and postdoctoral fellows who have been part of my lab over the years and who performed the work for which I'm being recognized.
Thank you
@SfNtweets

@IcahnMountSinai
is ramping down basic research to slow the spread of COVID-19. Making this decision goes against every instinct in my body--I never thought I'd see such a disruption to our nation's research enterprise, but it's an important step for everyone's safety.
Sorry to brag, but I'm so pleased to say that Mount Sinai's Departments of Neuroscience, Psychiatry, and Neurology are all in the top 10 by NIH funding in 2018. A great milestone for us.
We are incredibly proud to be among the first institutions to receive NIH's new Faculty Institutional Recruitment for Sustainable Transformation (FIRST) awards, the goal of which is to increase the diversity of our research faculty.
I just completed my term as SfN president–the privilege of a lifetime. A tremendous thanks to our fabulous professional SfN staff who serve our members so well. And thanks to our >30,000 attendees.
#SFN2017
Ron and I met in 1986 as postdocs. We joined the Yale faculty, founded the Laboratory of Molecular Psychiatry--the first in the country, and worked as partners in research for the next 13 years. We published 60 papers together and had enormous excitement and fun along the way.
We are proud to announce the publication of a new study by
@angelica_atb
in
@NeuroCellPress
which characterizes a novel role for H3K27me1 as a "chromatin scar" in nucleus accumbens that contributes to long-lasting sequelae of chronic stress.
@SinaiBrain
I want to draw your attention to a Neuroscience Forum workshop that I'll be moderating next week on September 23 focused on sex differences in neurological and psychiatric disorders based on transcriptomic data, with implications for therapeutics and policy. Please register!
I have long shown the slide below to make the point that it's hard to ascertain complex emotions in a rodent. This new study challenges my snarky slide but I stand by its major point!
Pushing the envelope for mouse behavioral obs: facial expressions reflect emotional state of malaise, fear, or sweetness. Groundbreaking proof of robustness by
@NadineGogolla
.
Who are the faces for? Can a mouse fake a smile?
1/3 Our nation's biomedical research enterprise faces crushing financial pressure from lost productivity caused by shutting down laboratories. I hope that Congress and the President will include robust support for NIH and its grantees in recovery bills now under consideration.
The end of "manels." Mount Sinai is proud to commit to organizing and hosting panels and symposia that include women or members of groups underrepresented in science and medicine. And our leaders commit to only participating in diverse panels elsewhere.

@MountSinaiNYC
PhD training should never be toxic and it is shocking that so many programs still are. PhD students should work hard and many experiments don't work--particularly at the outset, which is often frustrating and dispiriting.
@ElliotMiles8
They absolutely do exist. Was very lucky to work in a lab shared byRon Duman and
@EricJNestler
in the basement of the CMHC building
@YaleMed
- there was an amazing camaraderie and joy for science in the lab and it made the struggles of graduate school much easier.
Thank you all for acknowledging my obsessive relationship with my email. Answering emails so quickly is a highly potent anxiolytic. When I'm sitting in meetings and see those emails tick up (alarmingly and shockingly quickly some times) my stress levels rise! What a world...
Which is why email is not a reliable way to contact me. It is a 3 person job and I require professional assistance to get to the bottom😅.
But then there are people like
@EricJNestler
who have GOT to be receiving way more that reply in 30 s to every email.🤷🏻♀️
We will sorely miss the SfN annual meeting this fall. In fact, submitting SfN abstracts has become such a "rite of spring" that my lab went ahead and prepared "shadow SfN abstracts" nonetheless, which can be found here:
I am incredibly proud of
@IsslerOrna
and our collaborators for this new work using integrated human-mouse investigations to understand the molecular mechanisms of sex differences in depression.
This exciting discovery has inspired my very first "tweetprint". Here we go…🤞🏼
Please see our latest paper on transcriptional mechanisms of cocaine action in nucleus accumbens medium spiny neurons, focused on RXRalpha and its downstream effects on gene expression, in Neuron by Arthur Godino and others.
@SinaiBrain
As scientists we must always be open to evaluate new empirical data. But the conclusions of this paper are counter-intuitive and contrary to everything we’ve seen over the years.
We're aware of the concerns raised regarding the publication of this paper . We thank those who've contacted us about this issue & we're looking into it as a matter of priority.
@NatureComms
strongly believes in & supports equality and diversity in research
I am so honored to receive
@ACNPorg

Join us for a provocative and important discussion of why our nation’s MD-PhD programs have struggled to recruit women at a time when women admissions to MD only or to PhD only programs has excelled nationally. Why is training physician-scientists so different?
@SinaiBrain
Check out the eye-catching exhibition by
@PsychoGenicsInc
at SFN. Very exciting times for this biotech company that I helped found close to 25 years ago.
#SfN2023
Thank you, Marina! But you are being too kind. I tell everyone that perhaps my most important contribution to Yale was to help recruit you--which literally was in the last century! 😌
A shout out to
@EricJNestler
who took a chance on me and hired me as an assistant professor (back in the last century), then taught me how to be a successful academic scientist, both explicitly and by example. Thanks Eric!
