Today, I updated the BC Building Code to allow for Single Egress Stair (SES) designs in low- and mid-rise buildings.
By allowing SES, we will boost our housing supply and create more options for families who need larger layouts and designs.

The most surprising fact I found while making this video is that over half (53%) of children who live within walking distance of their schools STILL get driven to class. The problem is way more cultural than a lot of people think.
Thanks
@KahlonRav
, it’s not every day you have an opportunity to meaningfully contribute to housing solutions in our province. I’m very honoured and excited to be in this role. Hoping to learn lots while advocating for way more non-market housing in general.

This change will allow for housing that fits better in our communities. 🏡
To ensure the continuing safety of residents, all new SES builds will require specific safety measures:
✅ Sprinklers
✅ Wider Stairwells
✅ Smoke Management Systems

This removes a huge barrier for affordable housing projects. Under Vancouver's new Social Housing Initiative, non-market housing will be permitted as-of-right between 6-18 storeys throughout the city!!
One of my favourite maps from the last video. Metro Vancouver's SkyTrain network connects the region's lower income population to opportunities downtown and elsewhere. Transportation mobility = social mobility.

This video was tricky. I spent several months researching, writing, and losing my mind a few times before I felt confident enough with the script to produce it. It challenged many of my core assumptions around housing (and its elasticity) and I hope it does the same for you too.
NEW VIDEO! "The Non-capitalist Solution to the Housing Crisis", a deep dive into the subject of non-market housing: . A HUGE thank you to
@Vancity

Ever wonder why it's so rare to find apartments with 3 or more bedrooms in North America? Or why most of our apartments are wide and bulky? It really comes down to one building code requirement for staircases.
Probably one of the most jarring shots from the show but one that helped me understand why SUVs (and the general trend of cars getting bigger in size) are a concern for pedestrian safety.
Also a fun fact that CBC wouldn't let me publish - one of Shaughnessy's mansions (now Canuck's Place) was once the headquarters of Canada's Ku Klux Klan 🙃
IT'S FINALLY OUT! Stories About Here - 8 episodes on urban planning issues facing North American cities today - is streaming on

We’re leaving no stone unturned in our work to deliver more homes for people, faster.
We have launched an RFP to work with all partners in order to safely update the BC Building Code with single egress stairs in buildings up to 8 storeys.
👉🏾
Shaughnessy's heritage policies encourage hedges and gates to be built around its historic mansions and limits traffic in the area. What's the point in protecting heritage if we hide it from public view?
If our heritage policies end up creating exclusive neighbourhoods that discourage people from living or even visiting them, who are we really protecting heritage for?
My case against Shaughnessy:
Excited to share this video but one issue I didn’t get to unpack more in the script was why housing construction costs are increasing so dramatically. If anyone has any insights on the matter, I’d love to know!
We’re leaving no stone unturned in our work to deliver more homes for people, faster. 🏡
In January, we commissioned a report to work with all partners on updates to the Building Code with Single Egress Stairs.
Today, I released that report:

Great point from a session on tenant protections. Right now zoning incentivizes displacement because it’s waaaay easier to build in areas that already allow multi-family residences. And those are the areas with more renters.
This was hard but rewarding to produce. Gentrification is a complicated issue but CLTs are so far one of the only 'solutions' I've seen that offer a serious response. It's crazy challenging to maintain renter communities in a real-estate market, but we can still do smthing abt it
Asking for a video: In your opinion, what were some of the worst examples of public hearings in Metro Vancouver in the last decade? Rezonings, day-cares, etc.
Oooof heavy facts from Dr. Robert Bullard’s keynote rn. Black Americans are three times more likely to die of asthma than white Americans because they’re more likely to live near congested arterial roads. And yet that’s where most new developments are going.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, one specific house was constructed in Vancouver over 10,000 times. Known as the Vancouver Special, I think it offers lessons for our housing crisis today.

When my dad moved to canada from Korea in the 90s, he mailed my mom two photos. One to show how cheap oranges were at the grocery store. A second one to show the size of houses and grass lawns in his neighborhood. Must have been quite the culture shock.
Check out these new and improved bus stop signs I made for Barrington St. in Halifax! The street currently has 22 different bus routes(!) going through it so hopefully this helps riders navigate that a bit better.

Why can't you find a public bathroom when you need one? Why are bus stop signs always so hard to read?

My favourite part of making this video was getting the chance to visit so many different industrial businesses. Dairy processing, welding factories, sewage plants, etc. etc. etc. The video doesn't do it justice. It's crazy how much goes on bts to make our modern lives possible.
Cities often redevelop industrial sites such as warehouses and factories into trendy new neighbourhoods with shops and housing. Here's why that's a problem...
