Kai is truly one of those experiments that I still ponder. It improved the pacing, but only covered half the story. It gave us an HD remaster of Z, but with odd redraws/coloring. It gave us weaker JP performances but the absolute best English-dubbed DB content out there. Wild.

Respectfully: I completely disagree. Darkstalkers is fun because it's a bright, colorful, and VERY cartoony take on horror elements. The 1997 OVA leaned into the darker horror and it showed how far less interesting that would be. Let these monsters be silly.

Just a casual reminder that these are NOT 2 different series. DBZ is not a sequel to DB, and DB sure as hell is not a prequel to DBZ. Everything from Pilaf to Majin Buu is just Dragon Ball, and you missed 50% of the story if you started with Raditz and never went back.

THe more I think about it, the closest parallel I can think of to Kai are the Z Gundam movies. But even those had a lot of new animation in them. Kai being a straight-up recut/rerecording/recomposition of a previous series is one of those really unique productions IMO.
