Easy answer for me! Loran is my soul character and kindred spirit, and in particular I really value his honor system. Dianna is my favorite character ever—I admire her idealism and empathy, and her growth as both a person and leader is very heartwarming to see.

Chrono Trigger was my introduction to Akira Toriyama's artwork. I was just a little kid and was taken by its unique style. The character & monster designs were just so lively. I still consider it one of the best games ever. Thank you for everything.

RIP Syd Mead (1933-2019), legendary designer and visual futurist. Among his many contributions to film, he was the primary mechanical designer for Turn A Gundam. Tomino specifically sought his services and went through great lengths to facilitate the process.

This is one of my favorite scenes in the show. In Loran's unending desire to support Dianna, he uses the Turn A Gundam as a makeshift washing machine. Dianna's happiness as the soap bubbles surround her is so precious. And Masami Goto's animation is stellar. It's all so lovely.

12/30 is the anniversary of Syd Mead's passing. He was a visual futurist & industrial designer known for his contributions to many science fiction films. He left behind a legacy that shall forever be remembered. He was the primary mecha designer of Turn A Gundam. RIP (1933-2019)

Wow, my Uber driver was really interesting. He's a background artist for American and South Korean films/TV. He knew a lot about anime production, and he's even met Hayao Miyazaki. I showed him photos of some of my Turn A cels, which he loved. He had a high opinion of KyoAni.

This quote is from early-2000, which was around the time Director Tomino was finally healing from his depressive state. If that's how he viewed Evangelion, then it makes sense he'd react this way. He wanted Turn A to be filled with hope & happiness and appeal to a wide audience.

Syd Mead understood the basic premise of the Turn A fairly well, but in discussions with Sunrise he'd occasionally throw out the word "Turn X" as a joke. This eventually caught on with studio staff and they wanted to adopt the name into the show. This is how the Turn X was born.

Turn A Gundam's first episode was applauded by many industry people. Sunrise president Takayuki Yoshii said it gave him chills he hadn't felt since My Neighbor Totoro. Harutoshi Fukui (who'd later pen Gundam Unicorn) sent Director Tomino a fax, unable to contain his excitement.

There is sad news to share. Shinji Tanimura has passed away, a renowned singer-songwriter who collaborated with Director Tomino on First Gundam and Turn A Gundam. He wrote, composed, and sang "AURA" (Turn A ED1). He was specifically sought after for this role. Rest in peace.

The SUMO was originally proposed as a design for the Turn A Gundam, but it was rejected for being too bulky like a "sumo wrestler". However, it was repurposed into the SUMO. Director Tomino appreciated its design as a mesh of different cultures, and he thought that it was cute.

Syd Mead intentionally put the Turn A's antenna in the "mustache" position. From his industrial designer perspective, he thought it'd allow more expression and dynamism to the Gundam's movement. It is in the image of a Japanese kabuto (helmet) or an ancient Roman warrior.

Probably the most exhilarating new scene from G-Reco Movie IV, by Eiji Komatsu. Director Tomino drew the storyboard for the climax battle, but he did not give the animators many instructions otherwise. He was very happy with their passion and enthusiasm.

It's worth mentioning this again—Director Tomino collaborated with his youngest daughter Yukio on G-Reco's eyecatch choreography (she's a professional dancer). Producer Ogata had her perform the dance moves in person, so that the animators could use the recordings for reference.

Witch from Mercury broke barriers w/ SuleMio, had incredible sound direction and a bombastic soundtrack, and an interesting premise... but then botched its character writing, the setting was largely unexplored, and the plot was awfully rushed. Sadly this is still how I feel.

Turn A Gundam fans should consider Brain Powerd. It's worth watching! Turn A's planning and pre-production was happening in the studio as BP aired, so there's lots of carryover staff & mindset. It's a very introspective and philosophical look into Director Tomino's mind.

Please give Turn A Gundam a chance if you haven't. It features character designs by Akiman, mecha designs by Syd Mead, and music by Yoko Kanno. A story about a Moon queen and her knight, with an idyllic atmosphere and uplifting message. A work that healed Director Tomino's soul.

The G-Self is/was trending in Japan, so let's honor one of the greatest mobile suits ever. Designed by Akiman, it has various backpack upgrades and is piloted by the protagonist Bellri. Let's also hope that, one day, it'll get an MG model kit release.

Turn A Gundam episode #8 "Laura's Cow" was written by Tetsuko Takahashi on Director Tomino's request. He wanted the storyline to feature a cow and present the Gundam as a general-purpose machine instead of a weapon.

Storyboard artist Masakazu Obara came up with the idea to have the Kapool launch the Turn A up in the air. Staff members endearingly compared it to "volleyball" and VABO-CHAN, a mascot character for volleyball tournaments.

This is a defining character moment for Loran, as it sets the tone for the type of protagonist he's going to be. What's interesting is that in earlier versions of the scenario, his identity as Moonrace isn't revealed until much later on in the plot.

My advice to GUNDAM FANS... you actually don't have to watch every Gundam series. You also don't have to love all the same series that your friends do. You can think First Gundam sucks. You can think Turn A is boring. That's ok. It's better to be honest with yourself.

Ichirou Okouchi's script for Turn A Gundam #23 went through many revisions before it was approved, but by #36 he had adapted to the production style. When Director Tomino received a draft of the scenario, he responded with "Is this what we're doing? Are you guys serious?"
