This is why we don't put surface observing stations in major cities: The buildings modify the air flow! Clearest demonstration I've yet seen of this concept. Source:
I, a tornado researcher, do not wish for EF-5 tornadoes. Because, by definition, that would mean I would wish for one- and two-family residences to have their slabs swept clean, and the humans inside almost certainly dead from traumatic injury.

Remember when
@NWSBirmingham
shepherded central AL through the 2011 tornado outbreak? Or how their employees went to work faithfully earlier this year for nearly five weeks without pay? I stand with
@NWSBirmingham
even if their parent agency,
@noaa
, does not.
Meteorology students: Have your summer courses / internships been cancelled? Here are some suggestions for alternative activities that will give you a jump on the fall semester. Never stop learning!
I invite others to add resources to this thread: /1
I really don’t get the root of the outrage with NWS’s rating the 12/10 KY/TN tornado an EF-4. It doesn’t make the lives lost worth any less than if it had been rated EF-5. It doesn’t invalidate the legitimacy of the human trauma.

Coming soon! EF-scale v 3.0 will include new DIs, and radar (incl. mobile radar) observations will be admissible evidence for EF rating.

I just found out I’m being promoted to associate professor this summer!
This is the culmination of six years of work.
I am still in a daze, and not just because I was up until 2:30 am working on some Python code for my radar class.
No need to call or tweet NWS offices about what you see on your radar app. Literally everyone in this real life NWS ops video is using state-of-the-science tools to interrogate radar data and integrate it with other info. What they need are storm spotter reports from the ground.
Well that’s two consecutive HRRR runs (16z and 17z) generating an isolated supercell near Purdue.

is in rapid scan mode for the rest of the day. (Fingers crossed that I don’t burn out the magnetron!) I’m also planning to launch a radiosonde with students around 2000 UTC.
I’m getting some requests to “show my work” for my beam height estimate based on this graphic. Here you go. Even with a slightly overestimated range, the beam height still ends up being 250-300 m at the range of the tornado, far above ground level.

He didn’t explicitly order a tornado to strike the Capitol. He just destabilized the atmosphere, gathered the moisture, cranked the CAPE up to 15,000 J/kg, twisted the LL wind profile into a semicircle, and then gave thousands of parcels a gentle nudge upward.
Prime example of atmospheric refraction enhanced by cold thunderstorm outflow. After the gust front (thin reflectivity line) passes over KIND and the surrounding area, clutter suddenly appears. The radar beam is bent back toward the ground by cool air behind the gust front.

I have nothing but respect for NWS Storm Prediction Center and its forecasters.
@NWSSPC
is THE best severe wx forecast office in the world, full stop. 👏 👏
Their critics have clearly never spent a day in the hot seat. 🔥 🪑 🔥
I’ve offically changed from one kind of Ass. Prof. to another kind of Ass. Prof.
I was told that, with this promotion, I would gain the ability to shoot flaming balls of plasma from my hands. So far, the results are underwhelming.
Ten years ago today,
@meteodan
and I donned “I’d rather be storm chasing” T-shirts and were married by a judge in Norman, Oklahoma. Best $60 we ever spent. We’re a little older, grayer, and heavier than we were back then, but he’s still my favorite chase partner!
To my transgender students, colleagues, and friends: I am ashamed that my institution is hosting a speaker who rejects your humanity. You belong, you are valuable, and I respect you for who you are.
I don't know why it occurred to me to do this, but I put a SPC categorical outlook graphic thru an R-G color vision deficiency emulator, and this was the result. The colors for marginal and moderate are similar. At least the labels help. Reminder: 8% / 0.5% of men/women have CVD
I *finally* made some plots of the tornadic supercell from last Friday (6/25) near Rossville, IN. Fortuitously, it was in our least blocked sector so I can plot the 0.5 deg tilt!

Now seems like as good a time as any to review the common causes of death in tornadoes:
•Head injury
•Spine trauma
•Crush injury to the chest
This is what you flirt with when you try to "zero meter."

I'm excited to share that I've been appointed to the

I love this gentle reminder that NWS employees are regular people who live and work in the communities that they serve. NWS doesn’t just serve the public, they are the public.
Good morning! There will be surveys today, but after a long night and getting kids to schools, we are not quite out the door just yet. We have 13 total tracks we know we have to investigate. We are grabbing the prospective paths and will send more info later.

I watched the 2013 Moore, OK EF5 churn across the horizon from the KOUN building. Saw homes, businesses, and cars being lofted. I knew the tornado was killing people, and that knowledge made me nauseous. Helpless, too, because there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about it.
Any chaser crying because none of the recent tornadoes have been rated EF5, because the damage you saw “clearly” supported that rating…or who are hoping for an EF5 tomorrow…you’re a bunch of 🤡s. Seeing that kind of impact is a type of horrifying I cannot even put into words..
I put “Dr.” in front of my Twitter handle for a reason: I earned that title with my brains and grit (not to mention most of my 20s).
I’d challenge anyone to face examination by my Ph.D. committee, emerge victorious, and NOT insist on being called “Doctor”.

needs to seriously reconsider accepting Accuweather sponsorship for future conferences, seeing as there seems to be no limit to the depth to which the latter can stoop.
Another jaw-dropping skew-T from inside the high risk area. These supplemental radiosondes are one way scientific storm chasing can really help the forecasters working the event!
Be on the lookout for this new mobile radar on the Plains: UMass LPR (low power radar) will be collecting rapid scan dual pol obs in supercells! Training on it this week.

Finally decided to drop my policy of not following my own students on Twitter until post-graduation. Why? Because they have worthwhile things to say, and I’m in a position to amplify them.
When I got my B.S., I was told I wasn’t cut out for grad school because I got a C in Dynamics II. After a year as a research intern, I was wholeheartedly encouraged to pursue grad school. I got my M.S. & Ph.D. Which just goes to show, you should always get a 2nd opinion.
Seeing this going around & thought it might be a good prompt & discussion starter.
Surprise Friday

I went kitten-chasing on Friday, and bagged one! My sister rescued 6wo girl in NC. Our family was wanting a new cat, so yday I made a 13.5hr round trip to WV to meet my sister halfway. We’ve named the kitten Aster, short for Asterisk; because 2020 has been such an “asterisk” year

As I’ve transitioned from an early- to mid-career scientist, I’ve become more convinced of the importance of “research play”: Just screwing around with data and tools and seeing what emerges.
Too bad there aren’t funding mechanisms for that.
I don’t consider myself a Swiftie, but the fact that her Time Magazine POTY selection has pissed off so many incels raises my opinion of her considerably.
Feeling like a million bucks (okay, just slightly over two thousand bucks) after successfully changing a magnetron myself, with zero casualties.

’s back online, y’all!
That feeling when I click on a story about storm chasing in a major international news outlet and their first interview subject is… me.
Oh yeah, I did give that interview back in April.
In 2010, the radar truck I was in was T-boned by another vehicle whose driver who was watching the tornado rather than stopping at an intersection where it was required by law. I was fortunate that the only consequences were a lost day’s chase, vehicle damage, and a sore shoulder
Every so often, I run across a Doppler velocity image that’s a work of art.
I count at least five distinct layers with different wind directions and speed maxima.
Why does it feel like we rocketed past the “pandemic impacted everyone” phase to the amnesiac “So, what explains your productivity slowdown these past two years?”
