Columbia is threatening with calling the National Guard bc students voted YES to divest & cut all ties w/ Israeli universities. That referendum is binding & must be voted on by the faculty next. They would rather have a war zone than disclose & divest. @Columbia we are watching.

I didn’t make this decision lightly. I suffered immensely as a low income person to finish my grad training. I sacrificed to complete my fieldwork, which involved documenting a mining conflict. I gave academia my energy, health and time. It just didn’t give me enough back.

The gag is that to "make it" in academia through those postdoc & early TT years, a lot of people have to take on outside employment! To hold onto the dream of academia, we have to super-exploit ourselves while hiding our identities as workers. All for some vague idea of prestige!

4 girls cry for their mom after she was deported by Dominican migration authorities & they were left at a local police station. Notice how it is Black Dominican women indignant about the treatment of these girls, & men in the comment section of the video encouraging deportations.

Today, I was told I was “pontificating, obnoxious, & posturing” for trying to center the work of Black Dominicans working on histories of slave rebellions & marronage. IMO it’s uncomfortable to write about Black rebellion & only cite white, European or U.S. historians. But ok.

If you need a burst of light, here’s one: In January, my small & mighty community of Black Dominican feminists pooled funds to help one of our own with cancer treatment Insurance didn’t want to cover. Today she said she’s cancer-free! Community love, care & solidarity works!

@lorgia_pena I am so so so very sorry. The DSA conference is clearly not a safe space for scholars doing work on race, migration and anti-Blackness. I demand some kind of institutional response to this violence and abuse. THIS IS NOT OKAY!!

As a Black Caribbean immigrant benefitting from the legacy of the Black American fight for Civil Rights, my job is 2 be fresh legs in the struggle for #reparations . I don't expect to receive reparations myself, or 4 my descendants. But I love justice enough to make this my fight.

My weekend. The class of 2024 graduated into a sea of alums w/ the Palestinian flag. I also told the VP of advancement that our alumni base is organized & “No” on Divestment in the Fall would mean generational consequences 4 @BrownUniversity We will withhold donations & labor.

I did not celebrate anything today. I mourned silently. Mourned for the histories of anti-colonial struggle yet to be told about our people. Mourned for the lives and land lost for a flag of convenience. & I longed for the day we collectively celebrate our real independence.

I discovered today that Francisco del Rosario Sanchez, DR's Black founder who was murdered today 160 yrs ago 4 trying to stop Spain from recolonizing the DR with the local elite's help, passed through Dublin, the U.S., Curaçao and St.Thomas btw 1844 and 1861! #DiasporicBlackness

#DominicanRepublic government is too busy to upgrade infrastructure. Too busy destroying carbon-capturing mangrove coastal forests in the northwest of the country in order to build that border wall. Too busy shutting down Haiti’s canal irrigation project.

Any attempt at Black representation (or truly, of anyone who is not light-skinned to the point of being white passing) in the DR is being destroyed, attacked and vandalized like these murals. Ironically, the murals represent the carnival heritage of the villa Juana neighborhood.

Happy Abolition of Slavery Day in DR! Haitian forces liberated Black Dominicans from slavery in 1801 AND in 1822. All the way up to 1865, Spanish settlers and their children created schemes to re-enslave a pop. they feared. We still here, still Black, siempre cimarronxs!
