The Bishop of Oxford's concern: "a radical dislocation between the Church of England and the culture and society we are attempting to serve" Morning prayer: the faith of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; the lukewarm church in Laodicea; prayer "to reject the world’s deceits".

Here's to the women clergy who lead churches that aren't deemed prestigious, are in out-of-the-way locations, or with buildings of little architectural merit. I don't have stats, but my impression is that women clergy have taken on many such roles. #InternationalWomensDay

I am so struck by the power and quality of the singing. Too often in 'charismatic' worship, the band is so overpowering that the sense of a corporate, shared experience involving every human voice is lost. Not so here. (And - note the "thee"s!)

. @giles_fraser laments what being a bishop does to people spiritually - but what about the spiritual impact of relentlessly negative coverage by church people about the church? As a journalist-turned-priest I'm often astounded by our willingness publicly to wound each other.

I keep thinking, WWJSD (What would John Stott do)? Of evangelicals within the CofE, he once said: "We went from a ghetto to being on the ascendancy, which is a very dangerous place to be. Pride is the ever-present danger that faces all of us."

@bbcnickrobinson @allisonpearson @BBCr4today I certainly don't think @BBCr4today dismisses Christianity wholesale, but little comments/mistakes have a cumulative effect - eg a few days ago you called this week Easter Week, rather than Holy Week (Easter Week is next week) - many in the audience will have noticed the error.

The worst thing about what has happened with LLF at General Synod? The sense that we all apparently have to accept, with weary resignation, a compromise that no-one actually wants, because we’re encouraged to believe this is the best option this side of heaven! A thread…

Given all the scandals within the very parts of the church that particularly relish seeking the Holy Spirit, this feels like a complex Pentecost. But don't let disappointment in people prevent your heart being strangely warmed, and more, by the God who still speaks and acts.

Lots of commentary on what's wrong with the CofE. My honest response? Read the start of Acts 19. When the church takes God's promises about the Spirit seriously... a world-changing movement grows. When we act only in our own strength, reliant on human wisdom... not so much.

On ethical issues I believe the Spirit calls people to resist both a shrill, hardline conservatism and an accommodatory, 'anything goes' liberalism. This is modelled on Christ himself, who always met people where they were, and also invited them on a journey of transformation.

Struck by how toxic so much 'Christian' conversation on here remains. Perhaps we need to rediscover praying for our enemies? Reminded of Bonhoeffer on intercessory prayer: "I can no longer condemn or hate a brother for whom I pray."

In essence, I am amazed to see the church I love take a deliberate vote in the direction of disunity and division, combined with calculated doctrinal unclarity. I hope and pray that a better - more theologically and pastorally coherent - way forward might yet be found.

“Christians believe amazing things. And one of the most profound and wonderful truths we hold is this: that almighty God, the maker of heaven and earth, gives to us the gift of the Holy Spirit, who comes to live in us.” @Steven_Croft on the Holy Spirit

Honoured to be writing 'A Theology of Disagreement' for @SCM_Press - and hoping that Christians can learn to face our inevitable disagreements in a recognisably loving way. Publication anticipated May 2021!

Almost simultaneously with the publication of Living and Love and Faith, Christopher Landau ( @talkChristianly ) has just sent me the final manuscript of this...

In the debates we face, we surely need to recover a humility which seeks to speak truth in genuine love (heard as loving by those with whom we disagree!), and which gives the pursuit of unity its proper, treasured place in the life of the church.

Were there fewer than 50 people at your church yesterday? If you'd value a day of encouragement specifically for those leading smaller churches, @ReSourceARM is hosting a day in Telford next Saturday...

Meanwhile the idea (John 8:32) that there is such a thing as singular truth, and that Christians are being led towards it, seems to have been abandoned in favour of a fragile disunity where competing theologies are held in irreconcilable tension.

To accuse the Alliance of 'doom laden and catastrophising language' risks caricaturing an opponent, rather than seeking mutual understanding. Perhaps Romans 12:18 offers the reminder we all need: "If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all".

Moving to hear on @BBCR4Sunday from a man baptised among the ruins of St Bride's during WW2; and @bbclysedoucet on dangers facing journalists today. Church as 'spiritual home for media' still vital. @AlisonJoyce12 @MarkFoxNews @RelMedCentre @CI_MediaUK

You may think I'm naive in saying this, but I honestly believe many of the church's problems have a root cause - an impoverished view of the Holy Spirit. If you're at all interested in exploring this, you might like to note these Tuesday lunchtime 'Pentecost Conversations'...

I care about this because Martyn was unfailingly supportive to me when I trained at Cuddesdon while he was principal; and until earlier this year I was an hon. cathedral chaplain at Christ Church. This was my final sermon:

@AngelaTilby @churchofengland An even more important answer (surely) is seeing this translated into the life of ordinary local parishes - probably without the same kind of architectural and musical excellence, but with the offer of local connection and community (and the same Holy Spirit...!) @Vicky_ljohnson

Personally I'm delighted there are prayers in parliament at 1130 today... seeking wisdom from beyond ourselves. #prayforparliament #BrexitVote @PeteGreig @churchstate

. @CrispinBlunt has tabled an EDM saying that Parliamentary Prayers are not compatible with a society which respects the principle of freedom of and from religion and should not form part of the official business of Parliament.

A key verse is Romans 2:4, 'Do you not realise that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?'. How is anyone going to find the path of life (which I believe inescapably includes the pursuit of holiness) if they feel they have been denied God's kindness by the church?
