SWE based in Tokyo. Like nature, coffee, AI stuff. On a journey to self-learn & gain a deeper understanding of ML. ソフトウェアエンジニア。自然と珈琲、AI等が好きです。最近機械学習を独学しています。
my resolve from here: learn js during work hours (part of my job I barely know anything about), learn ml + math after I clock out & during weekends
repeat
Iced coffee from 7-eleven, math academy, light drizzle outside the window, and whole Saturday afternoon to myself. Never been a more perfect time to get into the zone. See you soon
Seeing a lot of Math Academy prop on this platform & it’s interesting to me as it hasn’t been long since I decided to learn math for ML from scratch
So my question: can anyone who’s used/been using Math Academy tell me if the $49/mo price is worth it? Seriously considering it
Math Academy has made me question the content we teach in school that does not prepare students for college-level math.
It has also confirmed to me that class names are way too restrictive.
Today's math academy practice has brought the ML math course's estimated completion from May down to Feb 2025, nice. Target is to finish it by the end of the year
Finally finished my math academy diagnostic, I believe it’s all going to be math for ml from here for me until I’m done with that course, then I’ll deviate towards other topics
Karpathy and Raschka might genuinely save my life, no joke when I say that I need to consume everything they’ve produced throughout their careers. So much to learn, incredible incredible incredible
Taking a 2.5 hour flight to Fukuoka this evening, so planning watch Karpathy’s makemore to get some intuition since I’ve got a couple of hours anyway
Talk to you later :)
This is such a beautiful tweet. When you realize you can just start learning anything you want & get better at it, you feel so free. The most amazing feeling in life.
feels bad not being able to do math academy man lol
even during the vacation I just think man I really wanna do some math
this never happened to me before, what a funny feeling
All these new followers don’t realize that all I do is talk about how bad I am at ml & math, maybe post some random photos of Tokyo here & there. You’re not getting anything interesting here!
Unless you wanna get better at these topics then yes this is the perfect place :)
I get at least 1 friend every week telling me “so you do programming stuff, right? I could never do that”
my response, each time: “how do you know you can’t do it? How exactly did you reach that conclusion?”
they often respond with “nah I’m just not cut out for it”
can confirm, anki was quintessential for me to get better than most of my peers who started learning Japanese at the same time as me
I could just revise the flashcards at any time & any moment, so the hours compounded really quick.
every mini ml project I try to do reminds me of the elephant in the room called pytorch that I need to study seriously & reach a level of familiarity by the end of this year
there’s just so much to study

I’m not even that good at coding, I’m literally learning JS at my job lol
but if someone else can be good at it, I know I can too
I tell this to my friends & they say I’m just a driven person
Maybe I am… but shouldn’t you try doing your absolute best to do what you wanna do?
A big update to
@_MathAcademy_
's Mathematics for Machine Learning is incoming. The complete list of new topics is below.
Some students were concerned that adding new topics would affect their progress in the existing course. We decided to create a new version of the course to
Decided to go to Kyushu (the southern part of Japan) next week(end) for a short holiday.
My plan is to visit Oita to attend the graduation ceremony of my juniors and also go to Fukuoka.
I’ll probably end up sharing some photos here, so you’re gonna have to bear with me here
An interesting realization: I used to find it difficult to study after work because I'd be tired to death every day
But then I started forcing myself to study after work every day -- not giving myself an excuse -- and I've stopped thinking or dreading that I get tired after work
I love seeing people post about things they’re studying man, it gives me incredible motivation to work even harder. All about the environment you create around you that add positive responses to your mindset

looks like a sick sick list & the thread has some more resources, just bookmarked
wanna go through them all by the end of the year
what an amazing platform this is for finding valuable materials
One of our students recently completed 125 learning tasks in a single day! 🤯
104 lessons, 8 quizzes, 10 reviews, 3 multisteps, 1156 XP in total, and close to 1,000 questions. They also earned bonus XP on 7 out of 8 quizzes.
Try doing that with Khan Academy.😉
@RooMaiku
I’m still in the middle of the “diagnostic” phase (see screenshot) so I might be able to tell you after the system highlights my deficiencies after this & I work on them. This discussion might be helpful to you, by the way:

there’s just so much to study
Write more. Write for no reason. Write to organize your thoughts. Write to get the chaos out of your mind. Write to attract people to the work you love doing. Write because most other habits are distractions that slowly chain you down. Write to change your life.
I believe building a study habit basically shifted my mentality. I actually look forward to it now. It's become something as synonymous as me showering, drinking coffee, and looking at the stars. I do it without questions. I find joy in it.
This probably was an issue with the way I thought about studying post-work: "ah I'll be tired", "man I just wanna rest", "didn't sleep enough today, won't be able to focus", etc
Maybe I was just looking for excuses. Ofc I was tired, but I wasn't being honest with myself either
Managed to (finally) understand & implement micrograd during Obon
↳wrote some notes I could revise later
↳ a simple MLP, but provided me (a noob) a much better intuitive grasp of forward & backward passes
↳ feels good seeing a nn give cool results, MNIST next me thinks
so there was an old guy beside me who was trying really hard to sleep & I felt bad because the light was getting in his way so had to stop after 30 mins of the vid :(
will continue it this morning during my 2 hours of train to Oita :)

Yesterday was the most exhausted I’ve ever been & I couldn’t get any study done after work since I slept immediately :( slept a lot though!
Today & tomorrow, we are hitting new levels of productivity
sometimes I wish I’d have realized my passion for ML when I was a 1st/2nd year in uni… when I’d realized it I was already entering my 4th year and was about to get into job hunting
and now I’ve started working already, so don’t have nearly as much time either
it is what it is
Hey, I’m left scratching my head here myself at the attention this is getting, but since a lot of people are asking:
Monitor: Dell U2520DR
Keyboard: Nuphy Air75 V2
Pen: the most basic muji pen ever
Finally landed in Tokyo after the Fukuoka-Oita trip, I love Kyushu so much man
Forgot my exercise papers & pens in Fukuoka so I’m just gonna rest for the night :(
We go again with ml & math enlightenment tomorrow
This! You can be amazing at what you do without being bigoted, racist, or a raging transphobe. Just be a decent human being! It’s not difficult. And if it is difficult for you, maybe you’re just a bad person
Guys did you know that you can still like money and computers and LLMs and entrepreneurship without being racist, sexist, hating transgender people or being generally socially inept to the point where people are indifferent about your pulse?
@paneerchilli65
I’m gonna try to implement his new LLM book after I’m done with Karpathy’s NN series by the end of the year (hopefully), their materials complement each other so well
Do let me know how Raschka’s PyTorch book is as well btw! Might wanna do that after Karpathy’s NN series
Today is the day! 🎉 After 1.5 years of hard work, "Build A Large Language Model (From Scratch)" is finally out!
Print or ebook copies are available on Manning’s site: 📚.
And it's also available on Amazon soon: 📦.
got quite busy this week so didn't get a lot of studying done but managed to:
- get the absolute basics of tmux & vim down
- start studying calculus, will do a lot of it this upcoming week
- make some progress on micrograd, still haven't completed it but will in ~2 days
I came to Japan for undergrad & had to basically learn this language from pretty much 0
Brutal years, but I enjoyed the process a lot. Knowing only English just didn’t cut it, I could only get so far evading the language
Far from a native level still but man I’ve come so far
finally the weekend! been busy with work & studying a bit of linear alg during the week so plan is to complete the microgrid video today
I love weekends, so nice to get the long study hours in without constant pauses like the weekdays
@krisoshea1
this is math academy, yes. I don’t really use much other than this, although I do refer to 3blue1brown & statquest’s yt channels here and there
I don’t feel sad because I consider myself to be incredibly fortunate to be where I am right now as I don’t really have a CS background
still could’ve done way much more if I’d realized it sooner though
but we go again
@h0dson
It’s pretty good, but I can’t say for sure until I do it for a while 😅 it’s only been like a week!
Atm it’s still making me do a lot of foundational stuff before I can start the proper core of ML math, which i think is nice. Basically helping me brush up things I’ve forgotten
@iRammohanSharma
- job security: yes
- switching jobs: depends, though Japanese people generally do that less imo
- work hours: depends, if it’s a more “japanese” company then maybe more likely, but a lot of companies are quite okay (~40)
- apartments: depends on the location (contd…)
@novasarc01
Hey! Japan is pretty cool & nice, a bit too hot lately though
I’m in the process of getting to know about the AI scene myself since I started my job very recently here
Would love to update you when I talk to more practitioners here since I’ve got a lot of them planned
@kennethnym
Also the replies to your post??? Handful of people there demanding sympathy points after their buddy got caught being a raging racist is… definitely something
