Instead of mastering an understanding of the basics, most movement pros play the game of “follow the mainstream leader” & focus on downstream outcomes (mobility, strength, power, skill...) & the exercise programs to improve those outcomes. This isn’t wrong, it’s incomplete.

Human movement boils down to bidirectional joint actions in 3 planes. Masters grasp how 6° of freedom applies to joints. The key to unlock better, what @WGF1 calls, “proprioceptive planning” is to restore brain-joint-ground connections. Signal 6° starts you down this path.

The kinetic chain is the integration of joint actions to perform patterns. Upright posture & locomotion are basic patterns. Like an orchestra, all joint actions must play their parts for there to be high quality patterns. A signaling deficit at any link means we compensate. @WGF1

Within the brain are hard-wired maps for 4 phases (left, right, up, down) of 2 rudimentary patterns (get upright, locomotion). Each phase contains either 98+ joint actions (right & left) or 7 joint actions (up & down). These maps are integral to motor control/pattern generation.

The brain perceives ground reaction force (GRF) as either safe/unsafe for every joint action. The brain generates patterns (motor control) from GRF-safe actions & works around GRF-unsafe actions. Resetting the brain’s unsafe perceptions back to safe optimizes motor control.

Assessing an athlete on a table/open chain/feet off of the ground isn’t the same environment that they’ll commonly encounter in the real world. But that doesn’t mean assessing supine/prone in the open chain is bad. Just need to consider including GRFs as part of your process.

The invisible problem robbing us of optimal movement is our brains perceiving certain joint actions as unable to tolerate ground force. These actions are also unavailable as raw materials to generate movement patterns. The brain rewires around these actions. This is inefficient.

The kinetic chain concept is legit. While it’s great to understand how the big toe, forefoot, rear foot/heel, & ankle function during locomotion - what about the rest? Ground reaction forces don’t stop at the ankle. Most movement pros need more knowledge of the kinetic chain.

It’s very humbling & exciting to hear 2 “name” guys like my buddies @WGF1 & @JustFlySports talking about my baby, SQUARE 1, for 10-15 minutes at the very beginning of this podcast. Thanks boys! Dan really dropped some SQUARE 1 bombs in the first 15-20 minutes of this podcast!
