I am thrilled to announce the launch of Coda’s newest product: Coda Brain!
It’s a turnkey AI platform, powered by Snowflake, that helps teams spend less time hunting for information and more time putting it to work.
I like to call it “your team’s favorite know-it-all.”

1/ Time for another doc. This one is historical.
YouTube’s hypergrowth was a rollercoaster, but we stayed grounded with a clear set of rituals. While it didn’t happen overnight, we gradually settled into the planning and meeting pattern you see in this diagram. A thread: 👇
7/ What started as an email reply to Daniel, gradually turned into a few pages of prose and then grew. I’ve captured the latest version in a doc, which you can read and contribute to here:
1/ Over my career, I've had the chance to help onboard dozens of executives - either directly/indirectly in my own teams, or in advising others going through the transition. Short thread 👇
One of the most challenging and valuable skills in the business world is the art of framing problems. We made up a word to capture a technique that we've found really valuable. Here's a writeup on "Eigenquestions". Feedback welcome!
I was extremely saddened to hear of
@SusanWojcicki
’s passing. It is an enormous loss for her family, and also for Google, and for the world.
Susan was my first boss at Google. She taught me the Google Way, but also the Susan Way. Google was known for thinking big, Susan was
4/ With those trends in mind, I base my exec onboarding process on 3 ideas:
- Run the old administration. Clean break. Now you're in charge.
- An intentional, documented, well executed 8-week learning plan.
- A single starter project that is not critical path.
I’m excited to share
that Coda has entered a strategic partnership with
@Snowflakedb
, the world’s leading Data Cloud company, plus a large investment round in Coda led by Snowflake Ventures!
Thrilled where this partnership is headed, and here’s a few reasons why. 🧵
Exciting update – today the team unveiled the vision for where we’re headed with AI in Coda.
I’ve been using Coda AI internally for a while, it has fundamentally changed the way I use Coda. I believe it has the potential to change the future of productivity. A short thread 👇
New doc, who dis.
We’re welcoming everyone into Coda 1.0 with the launch of our mobile app. Now you can create docs as powerful as apps. Thank you to the tens of thousands of beta users who used Coda and provided feedback.

Exciting news today! We just raised a $100M Series D round led by
@OTPPinfo
.
I’m impressed by how much the team has accomplished in the past year alone, and I’m eager to see what we will build next.
P.S., we’re hiring ;)
🎉 We just raised a $100 million round of Series D funding, led by
@OTPPinfo
— and we’re all-in on all-in-one docs.
What exactly does that mean? Glad you asked.
First and foremost, it means making docs even better for makers and their teams.

Huge kudos to the
@coda_hq

A short story: Early on in the product’s development, I asked them for their one-liner to describe their vision of Coda AI. We often approach new features or launches by “starting

Excited to unveil Coda 3.0 today after 2 years of hard work. Shiny new editor, an open packs system and marketplace, and 100+ other updates. Would love to know what you think!
Big news: we’re pleased to introduce the all-new Coda 3.0 — the doc that brings it all together.
With a brand new editor, an open Packs platform, and hundreds of your most requested updates, Coda 3.0 is ready for your team.
Read more about Coda 3.0:
Coda has always been remote-friendly, but the past 2 years of remote work have cemented my beliefs that you don’t need headquarters—or even an office—to collaborate well. As our company rituals have evolved, and with >40% of the company fully remote, here’s what I’ve observed:
Since we launched the

campaign, I keep getting pings about everyone’s favorite character (FWIW, mine is the Shady Lizard).
Today, I have more good news: we’ve pulled a number of the characters together for a new doc-umentary! Watch it here:

I’m thrilled to announce that
@coda_hq
has acquired
@platohq
, the world’s largest community of software engineering leaders.
For many years I have followed the growth of this community and admired their mission of spreading engineering excellence through mentorship. Fun fact:
Have you ever wondered how much time we spend in meetings? Or which of us has the best technique for managing free time? Or wanted to take a hacksaw to a particularly ineffective meeting? Introducing . A thread👇🏾
The Coda team just launched the Coda+FigJam widget which will eliminate copying and pasting from FigJam to a structured data tool. In a few clicks it brings your entire brainstorm into a Coda table!
But as fun as the tool is, the backstory of how it was built is even more fun...
5/ And a weekly cadence anchored our regular execution split into 4 meeting types: group information sharing, decision making forums, tag-ups, and 1:1s.
4/ For strategic planning, we bucked the classic Google quarterly OKR system and shifted to a 6-month / 6-week process — 6-month strategic planning for aspirations, 6-week sprint planning for commitments.
A few of you know that I coach my daughter's robotics team. They had a big day today - they took top prize in the Northern CA Championships! Here's a video of their winning run (10 pts short of the max):
🚀 Big news: today we’re excited to launch Coda 4.0 – the all-in-one platform for businesses, powered by AI.
You might be saying to yourself “Coda releases new features every day, what’s so special about Coda 4.0?”
We’re glad you asked...
@theryanking
We do a version of this at
@coda_hq
as well with some small diffs. Main one is that ours are 50% recourse not 100%. Also, we give every employee 20% of their stock as FF (founder's preferred) - another trick often reserved just for founders.

Smart Canvas news today - lots of "all-in-one doc" enthusiasm, clearly aligned with a future we see at
@coda_hq
as well. Curious for thoughts - what’s the dream “all-in-one doc” for you?
The meeting pundits are wrong.
They push us to single-threaded meetings. One group, one agenda, one discussion at a time.
This has a cascade of unforeseen side effects that can kill your team’s productivity.
But they are wrong. Multi-threaded meetings are way better than
6/ When I left YouTube in 2014, a number of other company leaders wanted to understand how YouTube worked. Spotify CEO/Co-Founder
@eldsjal
was the most encouraging — he suggested that I write a short summary of our key rituals so others may learn from them.
It took some work to get this just right (and there's a bunch of followups coming) but I've been using this for quite awhile and it's a total game changer.
🚨 Exciting news: your favorite tools can now be interactive pages in your Coda docs!
Reduce tab switching by embedding

pages into your favorite all-in-one doc.
Try it today—all you need is a link.
3/ And I’ve noticed 3 specific trends:
- No one knows who you are... and they are going to be skeptical.
- You have more to learn than you think. And no, you can't learn it later.
- What the leader thinks is broken isn't what everyone else thinks is broken.

Having worked on both extremes (YouTube=Video, Coda=text), I've found it actually easier to go the other way. The hardest part is generally insight. Once you've formed clear insight, you can talk about it forever :)

2/ The company was acquired early and had to adapt to being integrated into Google, a company well known for its rituals. While we borrowed many best practices, we also recognized that some of Google’s rituals didn’t quite fit.
This year, the future of work changed in an instant. We relied on docs more than ever—doubling our launch velocity to help our makers get the most out of Coda.
We’re kicking off a month of reflection by sharing our year in review.
Many know that I'm passionate about the rituals teams use to become successful.

Today's launch marks a significant milestone in our mission to power the maker generation. When anyone can build a business on Coda, there's no limit to what people can create. Whether you want to buy or sell Packs, check out the Gallery and let me know what you think!
🚨 Big, big news:
Coda's Pack marketplace is officially open for business. This launch opens new opportunities for both doc and Pack makers.
👉 Pack makers: Sell your Packs in our Gallery
👉 Doc makers: Trial & buy any Pack, regardless of plan
The impact:

Black Americans have faced injustice for a long time, and we must figure out how to help. From my reading and conversations, I’m using this as an opportunity to better educate myself about these important issues. And at Coda, we’re starting with the following actions:
The whole

team has been hard at work on bringing 2.0 to our makers (and their teams!). Packed full of the top requests from our community. Would love feedback!
Microsoft's ownership of the "blinking cursor of choice" for 3+ decades has lessened in recent years with the "all-in-one doc" movement. Interesting to see them start from scratch with

Early impressions?
New ritual alert! I recently learned of an amazing decision making ritual from my friend
@fidjissimo
[Instacart CEO]. Instead of grading decisions, she cleverly grades her _assumptions_. Here’s her writeup:

Since I first published my guide to distributed teams (), our team’s rituals continue to evolve as we expand and grow, and I’m curious to hear about yours. Which rituals have stuck with you these past two years, and which ones have you created?
Buttons in Coda docs have been incredibly popular since their launch in 2018—there are nearly 300 million in docs today!
Buttons turn Coda docs into interactive apps that connect to the world.
But did you know they almost never existed? 🧵

I remember well when
@zachlloydtweets

Thanks everyone for the amazing birthday wishes yesterday!
One fun anecdote - we have a ritual at
@coda_hq
where we make "virtual cards" for special events. Here's what one of our design leads,
@jerols
, submitted for me. Lots of inside jokes, but I thought it was amazing. And
This unlocks the most interesting productivity use cases, and the teams taking this leap do a few things well:
1. Measure goals, not work
2. Embrace asynchronous rituals
3. Focus synchronous time on building bonds, not producing work
Have you ever wanted planning to be WOOOOOOOOOW?
A few weeks back,

I encouraged the team to share where we’re headed early and start opening up the alpha process so makers can start building.
We’re just at the beginning of AI in productivity, and we’d love your feedback along the way as we iterate.
At
@coda_hq
, we’ve used rituals like Dory and Pulse as the default, async option. It means in many cases, we can reach consensus without needing a meeting, and it makes for a more inclusive culture. You can read more here:

Magical feature alert. So simple - paste any link into a doc (something everyone does dozens of times per day) and get a much richer result. It's a great example of how powerful underlying Coda building blocks can be brought to life in simple everyday experiences.
For some Friday fun...we've made some changes to how links are presented in Coda.
tl;dr - more options for how you display URLs you paste into Coda, from a plain ol' hyperlink to a full-fledged Packs connection. Read more about it 👉
