Our new story about Manipur's prolonged internet shutdown. Public interest triggered by "viral" events notwithstanding, the conflict has remained out of sight for the rest of the world. We argue THAT is the purpose the shutdown serves.

I'm constantly astonished by Amulya's story. 112 days in jail during a pandemic. For what? Having a John Lennonesque view of the world? If you didn't think of the world like that at 19, you're part of the problem. And to think of what her family has had to go through...
"She has enough documents to prove that she is Sabiya Khatun. But a tribunal had declared her a foreigner because the panchayat secretary, who provided a certificate to prove her parental linkage, failed to appear before it to testify that he had issued the certificate." (1/2)
Watched Laal Singh Chaddha yesterday. It was better than Forest Gump. Didn't realise how much I missed a good old Bollywood movie with so many emotions packed into 3 hours. More of this, please! Hope we retire 'concept' films, historicals set in ancient India and biopics.
This is the story of somebody who had to spend more than 3 years at a detention camp in Assam. I have no words to describe what has become of us.

Why don't we think about the Queer Azadi Mumbai members who collaborated with the police and RW to get a fellow trans* activist charged with sedition in the same way that we think about the Uber driver who took a passenger to the cops for talking about protests? (1/2)
Our story from Mumbai about OTT platforms in India crawling when they were asked to bend. While Bharat's political leadership aspires to rub shoulders with Western superpowers at the global high table, the best of India's creative minds worry we might be becoming the next Iran.
New: Under pressure from the Hindu right, Netflix and Amazon in India drop projects touching on political, social issues and documentaries. After "Tandav," Amazon's head went into hiding and surrendered passport. Netflix execs feared risk of arrest.
Spent most of the last three weeks understanding what is happening in Manipur. I visited the state and spent some time both in the valley and the hills. Our report, with pictures I clicked during my visit, is out now:

Both are instances of citizens turning against citizens even when no crime was committed. While so many people wrote about the former here and elsewhere, the latter is still not seen this way. Among other things, this reeks of classism too.

In junior school we were once asked "If I'm in a sanitarium, what am I?" No one on the team had a clue. I looked towards my teacher. She put her pen to the side of her head to indicate that the correct answer would be mad/insane. I didn't understand. So I went for "I'd be a pen?"
As I find more busts of Dr. Ambedkar in and around Bada Bazaar, I continue to wonder what he meant to this part of the city. Will be looking for answers to this question in 2021.
Found this one in Tiretti Bazaar aka Old China Town earlier this year.

Kal 14th April hai. After 4 weeks of isolation, I'm missing the thrill of walking around Calcutta. Here's a bust of Dr.Ambedkar I found outside an old, dilapidated building in Bada Bazaar 6 months ago. I wonder what was his connection with this part of the city.

Missing this poster from the wall of my room in Delhi. When I left Delhi, I left it on the wall because I thought I would return soon. Today, I don't know when I will return to Bombay, let alone the possibility of ever returning to Delhi. To memories of great films and cities!

Look at this woman arbitrarily bestowing the status of "most deserving" to someone seeking asylum. If you still don't get it, THIS is what is wrong with the bill. It creates arbitrary, unqualified grounds for privileging certain applications for citizenship over the others. (1/2)

What do lovers of cities do in times such as these? We read. About cities we have deeply loved and cities we are yet to fall in love with. This is a description of Lucknow from a book I'm reading today. The book itself has little to do with cities and that makes it even better!

People who haven't seen their school fees paid late or just-in-time for years because of their parents barely making ends meet, will not get it when one speaks of fees hike in JNU, or any other rationale for subsidised education.

The 16th of December is celebrated as the day of Victory on both sides of the border. We call it Vijay Diwas in India while the Bangladeshis (as well as some Indians as witnessed in this tweet) call it Bijoy Dibosh. It was a historic moment in 1971.

Things look very grim. Sporadic violence from across the state still makes the news daily. The two communities are deeply divided. The focus of relief work has been the movement of people so far. But it is clear that rehabilitation of the displaced is the next big problem.

A lot of people on the ground see the state govt. as biased towards one community. The armed forces and, to a certain extent, even the central government command more public trust. How the central government handles things from here will determine the future of the state.

16/12/1971 was a moment of collaboration between people of different countries in South Asia. This region has had a bloodied history of distrust and discord. Its people benefited when an oppressive rule came to its end on this date. But who benefits on 16th Dec this year?

How did it get so bad? Some allege that the violence was pre-planned while others claim the mass outrage was sudden, triggered by an ill-conceived High Court order. Both these theories don't stand the test of genuine scrutiny. Manipur has been on the edge for much longer.
