This book lays out the foundation for you 👇
🚨CSS News
CSS Trigonometric Functions just landed in Firefox, are available in Safari and are slated to land in Chromium soon (tentatively version 111).
What are they?
Font Awesome raised $721,620 to build an open source library of web components. Their goal was $30,000.
I need to collect my thoughts and put it in a blog post.
Dear devs and front-end designers, important research for a talk I'm giving: please fill in the blank:
"I would rather _____________ than attempt to style a native <select> element"
A friend just said that their team at Amazon, which has always been remote is being forced to come into the office and told to figure it out and relocate or lose their jobs.
Imagine being hired remotely, no where near an office and then being told, you’re SOL 😒
Bringing the bear back to form controls with CSS :has() and CSS anchoring 👀
ʕ´•ᴥ•`ʔ
:root:has([type=password]:focus) .paw {
top: anchor(--password, top);
}
Only JavaScript is to toggle the password reveal whose button is anchored to the input 😉

My hot take on this is that a lot of people won't take you seriously unless they know you've worked at a big / hot tech company.
It's not about not focusing on what we're working on now...it's that many of you won't take anyone who isn't a man in tech seriously without proof of
Some of you men have never been constantly harassed and it fucking shows. If you think we’re “whining” because of what happens online I’ve got news for you — it happens everywhere.
Physical spaces. Virtual spaces.
And we’re sick of it. So I’m going to keep whining about it.
I'm excited to say my book is available for early access! If you've wanted to understand UX and Visual Design fundamentals and feel more confident about making design choices as a web developer, this is the book for you. Use mlstimac for 50% off!

Why is the narrative always, "designers who know how to code are valuable"?
Why is it never, "engineers who understand design principles are valuable"?
For anyone suffering from burnout and struggling with wanting to create things but not having the energy: write your ideas down and come back to them later.
Give yourself time. Your side projects will be there. Your brain needs rest. You'll find the energy again.
Titles that indicate seniority absolutely mean something and hold weight and anyone who tells you otherwise has been privileged to not experience dismissiveness that comes with not having a senior title.
Oh friends. It's finally time to share some news of my own.
My last day at Microsoft will be next week. I have LOVED every minute of being on this team, teaching developers, working with developers and being an advocate for the web. It was an incredibly hard decision to make.
Guess what devs, there's a media query `
@media
(monochrome)` that exists so you can create styles for monochrome devices*
There's your Design Tip of the Day
*Depends on the browser, because Kindle doesn't support media queries in its browser.
Just started reading “A Colony in a Nation” by
@chrislhayes
tonight and will probably finish by tomorrow. Hands down the best book I’ve read this year.
My brother: just doing a little light neurosurgery for my rotation tomorrow.
Me: just fretting over the fact our color palette doesn't have colors I need.
Just read how students are screen recording themselves while they write essays because teachers are using tools to detect AI written essays and those tools are falsely detecting AI content leading to students failing when they didn’t use AI.
😐
Cool.
Denmark bound…to get married!
@jh3yy
💗
So excited to share my life with the best partner. When you meet the one who is truly a partner, it all makes sense. It all fits together.
I’m logging off. Some of you get it. There are some amazing men who step in and speak up.
And some of you would have us endure abuse and call it a misunderstanding.
It’s disgusting. I feel fucking broken right now. For what I and others women have experienced.
But the hardest decisions tend to be the most rewarding.
I'm extremely excited to announce that I'll be joining
@Rapid_API
as a Senior Product Manager to work on developer tooling.
I'll be in Seattle until October after which I'll be relocating to Berlin.
Just realized it’s been a year since being laid off barely four months after relocating to Germany.
I survived. I’m alive. I got married. I got my UK visa. I got a job with a company whose values are top tier. Every day is a constant journey of checking in with myself.
And
Sometimes self-care is ordering $50 worth of Thai food so you are absolutely set for dinner...then lunch...then dinner again and at least one more lunch.
Your reminder that ignoring issues like harassment, sexism, racism in the tech world doesn’t make you a better developer….these things are inherently a part of products that get built…..so thinking you can just ignore them is a detriment to the end product.
I've started writing chapter 1 of my book...started pondering that I've never seen anyone ask, "Should developers learn design?"
It's always "Should designers learn to code?"
✨New CSS Feature
Here's a demo of the CSS field-sizing property applied on a <textarea> I blogged about yesterday.
textarea {
field-sizing: content;
}
The textarea grows as you add content.
This is currently in developer trial behind a flag in Chromium.
In a shocking turn of events, it turns out I want to hang out with people often. Introverted-ness be damned. I’ve been alone too much over the last year.
Anyone else look at their to-do list personal or work and just start their day so overwhelmed you don’t know where to start and end up in a cycle or exhaustion?
I have decided that I will continue to wear my mask in kickboxing class because I’m still wary despite being vaccinated…but also because a I look like a mortal combat character with it on 🤓
Survived a layoff in Germany 4 months after uprooting my life in Seattle for the job, refocused and prioritized my personal wellbeing and got my UK Visa and married my best friend ❤️
