Compare with the seat of the Emeco navy chair - an industrial design classic. Although our bodies' seats vary in size and shape, the curved "butt cheek" design here provides significantly better weight distribution and comfort.

The worst issue is that the side bars prevent all but the narrowest of hips from passing, so for most adult bodies, you have these things digging into your love handles and your spine has zero support. The actual back rest is inexplicably several inches back.

My dad is flying out of MSP (a 10-minute drive from my house to terminal) at 10pm tonight. He just arrived at my place at 12:30pm ready to go. "I would have left the house earlier," he explained, "but I wanted to wait till the dishwasher was done."

The seat itself is always flat - sometimes it's wood instead of metal, but still flat. This creates pressure points on your sit bones, rather than distributing your body's weight across a larger surface area of the butt and thighs.

Another issue is the weight balance. Especially for the all-metal ones, the seat and legs are too light compared to the back. If you lean back it starts to tip easily. Put your winter jacket on there? Don't stand up too quickly.

A couple alternatives I like for general purpose sturdy restaurant seating: Emeco Navy Chair is a fav, as mentioned. But at $700 a pop it's a tough sell. However, there are a million knockoffs of this design that are still nice (right)

A more budget-friendly option is these chairs from Article ($90 each with bulk discounts available). I have a few I intended to use as patio chairs — they don't do great in the sun, so I wouldn't do that again. But stackable, washable, ergonomic, and still a bit playful.

Gonna add a couple other suggested chairs, since people are (fairly) pointing out that this is not stackable. First, also a medium-expensive option, but Herman Miller Caper is a light, stackable, ergonomic chair with 300 lb rating. $250 ea retail.

This is a 🧵 of details of the urban environment I consider to be in good or bad taste. The stuff we don't usually talk about. Starting off: having a driveway apron is in good taste. Simply having a lowered part of the curb and going straight to asphalt driveway is in bad taste.

Drive-thrus are bad for cities. They're bad for pedestrians, bad for air quality, and bad for neighboring property. They generate more car traffic and usually with low-economic-value trips — taking an 8-mile round trip to spend $5 on fast food / coffee.

There's a false timeline in a lot of urbanist discussions — where a lot of people seem to think the 50s and 60s was peak era of suburbia. But (despite rapid growth of tract housing) the suburbia of the 1950s looks a lot more like its prewar urbanism than modern suburbia. 🧵

Speed limits are an especially relevant example of the culture of lawlesness when driving, because the entire core of how to set speed limits is based on the idea that drivers won't necessarily follow the law. In most jurisdictions, if enough drivers speed, limits go up.

8. Cell phone use What the law says: You can't touch your phone while driving, except one-touch actions designed to be done while driving. Casual lawlessness: At a minimum, OK to change music. On the high end, OK to film Instagram stories while driving.

Love seeing this level crossing at Lagoon and Dupont! This design really seems on its way to becoming a new standard for intersections of minor and major streets. (For minor street meeting minor street, I'd love to see the whole intersection raised!)

Immediate postwar suburbia was more centered on rapid growth of relatively affordable new houses. It did include some new styles (like the rambler), but it made simple retrofits for the car. Post-1970s suburbia centers the car in every aspect of design.

Culturally speaking, one of the oddest things to me about St. Paul is the obsession with personally loading up one's Subaru Forester with yard waste to go idle for 45 minutes on a beautiful Saturday to drop it off here. You can just get yard waste service? It's like $100 a year.

You'd think this would only be an issue where there are no sidewalks — SURELY if you have a sidewalk you'd have an apron between curb and sidewalk. Sadly that's actually pretty common in south metro:

But aesthetics matter even on taller lighting. Here's one I feel strongly about: right-angle (1) and "shoebox"-style (2) lights are in better taste than rounded light poles (3).

I don't know if it was helpful for Walz to opine he would have removed the case, but I appreciate the sound rejection of the idea his actions are somehow rooted in homophobia.

Moriarty tells strib Walz's criticism of her handling of trooper case was driven by her gender and sexual orientation. Walz paused then flatly denied when read this quote by @rochelleolson : "That's false. Next question."
