@elonmusk Right now, a billion people suffer from diseases and disabilities of old age. We don't need to discuss cosmological immortality. We need to end this suffering. We need a Moonshot project to defeat cancer, cvd, dementia, and aging itself. Stay healthy and live as long as you wish

@GabrielMariya @CNIOStopCancer @EUScienceInnov We need a Moonshot Project to end aging and age-related diseases. Aging kills 1 million people every week. Aging is about suffering, disabilities, diseases. At the same time, aging research is severely underfunded. We need a Moonshot with $20bn/year going to $100bn/year in 2030.

@sama No, we need to stop AGI research until we have a solid clear theory or at least consensus that AGI research wouldn't lead to human extinction or other global catastrophe. And hopefully it will be regulated that way.

Probably people would understand the concept of *delay* aging (and onset of age-related diseases such as cancer, heart diseases, dementia etc.). It's what people think they see sometimes in other people. Like, let 70 be new 40, 90 new 60. And it's the first step to defeat aging.

@jpsenescence Perception: you can sometimes cure cancer, but can't cure aging. To most people it sounds like you're working on a time machine. So it's more than a simple PR problem. It's fundamental aging biology education. The 1st real gerotherapeutic will catalyze these dialogues at scale.

@ArthurB Don't regulate nuclear bombs you doomers! They can be used for good: to deflect asteroids, to mine Earth for resources, to clear path in mountains. It's just a tool. It's not A-bomb that kills you but person who explodes it! It's safest when everyone has A-bomb, because of MAD.

Research on age-related diseases is crucial. Even if there were no NIA, aging processes would still be (and they are) studied in research on age-related diseases. Currently only 20-30% (~$10b/year) of NIH funding goes to research on age-related diseases:

Also, I can't speak for myself in a million years from now. No one can, we can just guess.

2/7 Collectively, it should be feasible to obtain first 1000 signatures or support statements of NIH scientists within 6 months. This would already mark a great achievement and grant the immortalist movement an unprecedented level of credibility.

It's nice to see people with passion to #MoonshotProjectToEndAging ! We need to unite all Moonshot enthusiasts for a discussion and action.

@EricVerdin What is the most convincing reason not to believe in possibility of living googolplex years? (just some practical definition of almost immortality)

There is a great petition by @TheA4li calling for funding $1bn/year for Division of Aging Biology of NIA. However, nobody can be impressed by number of anonymous petition signatures. We need them non-anonymous as in Open Letter of scientists on cryonics:

The Alliance for Longevity Initiatives (A4LI)

That is why we have created a petition, requesting increased appropriations to the National Institute on Aging - Division of Aging Biology. You can sign our petition here:

@Nst_Egorova @elonmusk Yeah, his "solution" for gerontocracy problem is many orders of magnitude worse than the problem itself. It's almost like what if we just kill everybody and there would be no gerontocracy at all.

"Delay aging" seems to be too weak to get Moonshot level funding. For people not familiar with LEV it sounds like one still gets deadly cancer or heart attack but say 20 years later. Does it generate enough value for people to be excited enough?

@aubreydegrey Creating a slack on life extension research and promotion is another very promising idea! so that people communicate more with each other. Especially if it's advertised among participants of aging conferences etc (or discord, or any other place which fits for serious discussions)

@PauseAI @bindureddy But also: what happens if every single person on earth suddenly gains the ability to design a vaccine and cure against any virus, to detect viruses much better, to improve health nullifying viruses lethality? What if companies use AI to find and fix zero-day exploits first?

@LongevityEVF Nice. If you want to sign a letter with a concrete Call to Action, consider these 2 open letters: 1) on aging, to European Parliament: 2) on aging, to US Congress: They ask for a Moonshot on aging w $20bn/year ($100bn/y from 2030).

@turchin Who knows. But in this case I'd definitely like if we all publish addendum to Dublin Declaration calling for many $billions on longevity research and on reversible cryopreservation research, and also on scaling the number of cryonics facilities and decreasing their price.

@PeterDiamandis If you give me $1B, I give $100M to Aubrey de Grey, $400M to 100 other life extension enthusiasts to promote topic, and will use $500M to collect 100k support statements from scientists to launch a #MoonshotProjectToEndAging with $20bn/year funding, and to lobby for that Moonshot

@MikhailBatin 3. More funding for organization moments. Not just for science. We need a plan with explicit goal to solve aging. 4. Right people should lead the NIH or Moonshot. People who are passionate about solving aging and age-related diseases.

@GaryMarcus @ylecun However, if AGI x-risks are 10-90% (Jan Leike), ~100% (Eliezer Yudkowsky) or 10-25% (Dario Amodei), we better think twice to use AGI to help us solve aging. The price might be too high, and we probably can try to do that w/o AGI, even if it requires more funding for Moonshots.

@GlamGrafter @yangranat What would the world look like where everyone dies? Not really fascinating. Imagine that aging is solved. I'm sure all problems could be solved in a more civilized way than killing people accordingly to their previous mortality rates.

@MikhailBatin 1. Need more funding. It's most important, everything follows from this. 2. Need a real wide internet-based discussion (slacks, discords, lesswrong-like websites) instead of ceremonial conferences which are an endless sequence of monologues which isn't discussion

@SF_Longevity In my opinion, a large Open Letter to US Congress makes exactly what you write. It's collective influence by (hopefully) a lot of scientists, programmers, artists, etc. It's a perfect cause for any transhumanist to ask any other person on what do they think of Moonshot project.

@Dr_Behrouz @DanilaImmortal While concept of absolute immortality is largely philosophical, the concept of defeating aging and age-related diseases is in my opinion quite sellable. People should have possibility to live healthy as long as they want. Death of old age should be optional.

6/7 Convincing scientific community is the key: once #MoonshotProjectToEndAging becomes an official NIH stance, everything else is straightforward. People trust experts, politicians trust experts. Sadly, experts are largely silent for now.

3/7 Even with only 1000 signatures, it becomes much easier to get new supporters within scientific community (to advance toward 10k, 100k signatures, and establishing #MoonshotProjectToEndAging as an official NIH position), in political circles, and among the general population.
