🧵1/n I have bad news and good news The bad news: With an avg. lifespan of ~80 and physical peak at 25-30, most of your life will be spent in physical decline. If you're like 90%+ of people, you'll be ill prepared & experience surprise and confusion as your body breaks down.

Aging is *by far* the greatest cause of suffering & death for humans. This is only denied due to false bias that aging is inevitable despite evidence to the contrary. Mitigating other causes of death is good, but misses the forest for the trees & only postpones death-by-aging.

Some worry that solving aging would open a can of ethical worms; a truly bizarre idea when you consider the devastating status quo 👇 1. The aged suffer inequity and disenfranchisement. 2. We now spend trillions foolishly on the last few years of life, only to gain tiny amounts

My first step was to check the state of the art. We. Were. Fucked. It had been 17 years & there were still: ZERO interventions to extend max human lifespan ZERO approved drugs for aging ZERO surrogate biomarkers to detect if a drug worked w/o long & costly lifespan studies

10/14 // Reason #7 // They'd put in money if only there was a good idea or plan. In other words, they'd rather age & die than invest to: 1. Get somebody to come up with a good idea or plan 2. Fund it 🤷‍♂️ Seems like a deflection, but also very common.

Two cognitively dissonant thoughts: 1. We’re currently nowhere near on track when it comes to solving aging and death; we should do something about it! 2. So far, life was entirely spent chasing status & 💰 instead.

🧵 1/2 How can we convince more people to invest time+$ into longevity? The right msg for the right audience! For example, some longevity supporters think “We’re making good progress” and do nothing. They need to hear: “We’re moving way too slow for you to benefit!”

@cha_myoung Why trivialize the only successful strategy as “bonkers”? Is 800k+ dead less bonkers? By both health and the economy, China, Taiwan and New Zealand did orders of magnitude better than most other countries. Their deficits notwithstanding, this should be celebrated and emulated.

We mapped our genome & reverted adult cells to a rejuvenated stem cell state. We used old cells to make a youthful clone with normal lifespan, showing the data that produces youth isn't lost. But we need 100x the brains & capital + new regulations, for anyone alive to make it

Many say they are “fine with death”. But then “inexplicably” offer their kingdom for an extra year when death from aging comes knocking. Pretending everything is fine doesn’t solve problems. But science does.

It’s deflating to admit, but vs $4.5T in US sick-care, the entire longevity field gets peanuts! Plus, due to social norms many scientists won't even say death is a problem, producing astonishing contortions like calling extended lifespans a "coincidence"

Q: What would an ACTUAL war on aging look like? A: Massive allocation of resources. - Manhattan Project: 130,000+ people / $20B - Apollo Program (cold war): 400,000 + people / $250B - War on COVID: 5 - 10M people / $3 Trillion+ - WW2: 20M people / $5 Trillion+

People justifying death at some arbitrary age will look ridiculous (or barbaric) in the near future...

🧵Most don't want to age & die, yet do little to support basic science to fight aging. Even billionaires. It's irrational, in specific ways. Let's understand them better to drive change! 👇Here are 7 logical inconsistencies (add yours below)
