Today is release day for
#disobedientwomen
! Thank you so much for those who shared their stories and made this book possible.
Survivors of abuse and harmful teachings, may you feel seen. Advocates, may you be valued.
And may all those looking for a path to healing find one.
Nosing around and it's no surprise I cannot find business filings for Gateway Church (churches are not required to do so). But I did notice something interesting in the 990s for Robert Morris Evangelistic Association starting in 2018. Morris was paid more than the annual revenue.
I met
@shannonrwatts
, whose organization changed the course of my life. I got tongue-tied and later walked into a chair and knocked her clipboard and phone onto the ground. 😶
Y'all... my editor just emailed. Disobedient Women made USA Today's best-seller list. You know what this means?? Stories of these outspoken, brave survivors and advocates are being READ all over the country.
Please keep spreading the word.
I was pulling out of the driveway in the rain yesterday and spotted a shipping envelope at my door. My editor told me a first copy of my book was on its way, so I darted out through the rain to grab the package and ran back to the car.
@lauren_kelley
Reporting at the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting this week at panel about Dobbs, they told pastors 1 in 3 women in your churches have had an abortion.
My latest, for
@Newsweek
. "Women have long been useful mouthpieces for conservative values in America, particularly when those values limit women's rights and roles."
Researching/writing Disobedient Women, I ran across so many people who were called ‘slanderers,’ ‘defamers,’ or ‘gossips’ for pointing out error and abuse in the church. It’s a tired, old tactic, and it does silence some. And that’s WHY these terms are thrown around.
Y'all I published my 1st book this week... & went viral over my kid's question about caterpillars. Sounds about right.
If you're interested in a very different sort of metamorphosis, check out Disobedient Women.
I'll be here my kid's next Q as it comes.

I have been very distressed to witness the churn over the past week, weeks, months...
"Bullying is too often the favored tool in the cult of Christian masculinity, in modern American evangelicalism. Too often it works."
Grateful right now, it's not.
My interview with Shannon Harris is at the top of
@Slate
's homepage. We talked about her new book, which covers the inner world of a life, her life, wedged into a model of 'biblical' womanhood.
I spent this summer talking to many women for various stories who were taught following God means submission to their husbands. The idea of consent dissolves, they dissociate from their bodies. Where, oh where, is the godliness in treating women like this?
Just got a text from a staff member at my mom's nursing home saying she ate all her lunch and really seemed to enjoy the ladies she was sitting with today and it's these simple but profoundly thoughtful acts that show me she's OK and thoughtfully cared for.
My daughter was listening in as I was streaming discussion of
#SBC23
resolution 5, which became ever clearer concerning how Baptists feel about women in pastoral leadership.
She concluded, "Well, they're gonna lose business."
It can be so difficult, within an insular faith community or small town, to see a way out, to recognize what is happening to you is not okay. Especially if questioning or leaving results in isolation or rejection. There's so much risk in making yourself safe.
It's done. Draft

, at least. I submitted it to my editor earlier today.
I had so many plans to post thoughtful commentary on the process. Instead, I feel like I just birthed a child. I want a nap and for someone to bring me a sandwich.
#amwriting
I was a very low-income, free lunch kid. That lunch did not do me harm. Being separated out with a different color lunch ticket was embarrassing, but getting to eat every day at school made me ready to learn. Every kid should have that + what a perk to not feel shame for eating!
After 9 years working from home, starting from coworking with an infant and juggling all the home stuff while working, I start my first day today in a new office I'm renting to give myself space & work-life boundaries. It feels like sacred space.
My husband packed my lunch.
I just learned my local library system is about to order EIGHT MORE copies of Disobedient Women. (They already had 10.) I'm feeling all sorts of hometown love and library love.
I don't know what gives people strength to step out, but I do know it's easier when you are not alone. The women (and a few men) I spoke to for this story were so profoundly brave, and doing so together helped make them braver.
Abuse cover-up within SBC was not due to atheism.
People who claimed to love and fear God justified functional indifference to horrors as a means of avoiding liability.
Pretending otherwise means avoiding bearing witness to the hard reality. That's what got SBC here.
#SBCtoo
If you have a moment, please read their story. Then share it, because systems that excuse abuse should be shown as they are--forced to improve. Please help these women know they are heard and understood. So many times before there have been attempts to silence one at a time.
It has been dizzying, tracking the "firestorm" begun by Douglas Wilson, the response from people encountering him for the first time, and the deeper story, which is behind the flashy antics, there is a theology that fosters and mishandles abuse. My latest:
Yesterday I also learned that Disobedient Women was one of the top five books sold at BookPeople last month in Moscow, Idaho.
May more people learn they are not alone.
@ExaminingMoscow
My father passed away peacefully in his sleep early this morning, his 80th birthday. His sisters got a chance to say goodbye yesterday and thanks to his wonderful hospice nurse, Amanda, he was without pain. For as sick as he was, this was the gentlest path.
I started this story last fall for
@GENmag
after reading
@angela_denker
's Red State Christians. So much has changed over these months in our country, but it's offered a window into many women's faith and political thinking.

Two nights of panel talking heads has been exhausting, but

is spot on right. The past 24 hours should be a wake up call. Put the feelings away and get the strategy figured out. Fast.
Thinking this morning about how many of my sources for Disobedient Women described the ways Bill Gothard’s opinions were understood as near gospel by their families. His views dictated the clothes they wore (skirt length, neckline).
There's a bipartisan bill in Missouri to end child marriage up for debate and the only person speaking in opposition was Rev. Timothy Faber, a Southern Baptist pastor and former lobbyist for the Missouri Baptist Convention.
@emilynussbaum
I was sworn in for city council, and we don't use any texts for swearing-in. My raised hand and promise were enough. If I'd had the choice, I would have used my old pocket Constitution.
Cindy Clemishire's statement on
@wartwatch
"I wholeheartedly and sadly believe I am not the only victim. I encourage anyone who has been sexually victimized by a leader at Gateway Church to take the bold step forward and say something."
I woke to the surprise of being cited in a Focus on the Family article. It’s a piece that conflates ‘radical feminist’ rejection of patriarchy as the cause for destabilizing families and robbing boys of opportunities to thrive.
ICYMI: The excerpt of

Hey, Christian Twitter (or folks just learning about Doug Wilson, Christ Church and Moscow).
@VICENews
ran an excerpt from Disobedient Women a few weeks ago that can serve as a primer.
Some folks have been screaming about this for years.
It was so meaningful to sit beside
@ChristaBrown777
as she shared her story just a street away from

@ThigpenTiffany

The radical submission does not stop after dating. Some of the most tragic stories I've heard in my reporting are from women who absorbed Wilson's advice for marriage and became trapped in abusive marriages they were supposed to fix through sexual duty.
Here are screenshots of Doug Wilson grooming women to be simpering, manipulative, decorative baubles who are the property of men, and who will give up their agency and voice.
Doug Wilson is selling a formula.
It’s a grift.
His grift dehumanizes and degrades women.

Outrage at women speaking up instead of over abuse and coverup is part of how SBC got here.
We learned my dad has metastatic cancer. On top of dementia. I cannot describe the agony of living a memory loop where I keep telling him he has cancer. He just asked me, "I'm going to die?" I said yes. He took it in stride somehow. I wonder how many more times I'll tell him.
ICYMI: My interview with Shannon Harris for
@Slate
. For years after reading Josh Harris's version of their courtship, I wondered about the real woman depicted in those books.
Same sweet deal in 2019. (This is for a reported 15 hours a week, which as far as a side gig goes, is better than I ever made delivering papers...) This is a grab from the 2019 990.
There is an actual documentary called From Paris to Pittsburgh that spotlights how American cities, featuring Pittsburgh, are stepping up in the fight against climate change. It's helping *build* the economy and helps make us all healthier and safer.
By rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement, President Biden indicates he’s more interested in the views of the citizens of Paris than in the jobs of the citizens of Pittsburgh. This agreement will do little to affect the climate and will harm the livelihoods of Americans.
I told my daughter she could be president. I never planned to run myself. Tuesday I won my first election and will begin serving on city council December 1. Thank you Wyoming, OH voters,

You’ve seen the video advising parents to spank children to provoke joyful greeting/compliance. Wilson’s theology also requires female submission which creates compliance. Listen to Hilary’s story.
Why do I believe her? Her dad confirmed her story to me when I reported for VICE.

Can we talk a little bit more about Hilary Medina’s case? Hilary’s family were Christ Church members and Hilary attended Logos.
Hilary’s case has a lot of primary witnesses in it: Hilary herself, Doug Wilson, Nancy Wilson, and a father who confessed to secretly engaging in

We don’t know each other past a brief interaction, and in the event this finds you, wherever you are, tucked behind anonymity, I am hoping it may be of service in your walk with God.

When their churches wouldn't listen to survivors, these women did. They created platforms for fearless truth-telling, broke news, and are building the pressure for change.
Thank you
@wpmagazine
for helping me tell their stories.
@liviecampbell
I oscillate. It can be so extreme. Yesterday I was laughing out loud at some of it because it was absolutely absurd. Then I talk to women whose lives were shaped by this stuff and it just breaks my heart. What a thing to do with someone else's faith.
Ok. Not that there is even an attempt to be trauma-informed at this point, but no survivor owes these details and if they do share, it is after developing trust. Be diligent, yes. Not entitled, and certainly not as part of a defensive Twitter attack.

Let me ask you a simple question—what kind of abuse does Lyell claim? Rape? Groping? Some other form of assault? Do you know? If you don’t, ask yourself why she has never had to provide even this basic info.
You see a moment like this and rightly think about figures like Clinton who pushed us toward this possibility. But looking at that wistful look on Jesse Jackson's face, you think about just how many people it takes to bend history toward a moment.
#DNCConvention2024
And then Braveheart. But despite the Chrsitian social order talk that particular speaker did warn against idolatry of the flag, so at this point, that was refreshing??
Paige Patterson's new book evidently argues that scripture/pastors are sufficient for providing counseling.
This runs directly counter to his own horrific failures giving 'counsel' to sexual assault survivors and which led to his firing.
Wilson's world is a microcosm of what Christian nationalism wedded to Christian patriarchy does to real people's lives. Abuse is normalized, excused, and mishandled.
It becomes so, SO risky to speak out. I am deeply grateful to those who trusted me to help them do so.

Now
@sarahstankorb
has published a book on authoritarian abuse called “Disobedient Women.” What does the title mean? In authoritarian groups, women aren’t supposed to speak and they’re certainly not supposed to speak about their abuse. Sarah interviewed several of our EDWAM
💯YES! Men can preach patriarchy and submission all day, but it's the women who adopt, normalize and spread to their friends who help convince the next woman, and the next that this is a tolerable (or even superior) way to live.
It's easy to think of women's submission as a relic of a bygone era. But, as I explain in Holding It Together, many White Evangelical Christian moms accept this "hierarchy," not only because of what they read in scripture but because of what they hear from other moms. 1/
I wore a long skirt in part because I didn't want to stand out. These Midwestern homeschooling moms, it seems, figured out soft pants ages ago. Like 90% yoga pants in this crowd.

Folks. There is so much wrong here, from the gleeful retelling, the scared kid forced to fake cheer, to the sense that this is parenting advice to take on good authority.
Imagine how many people incorporated such guidance as godly.
If you consider that the average CSA survivor steps forward at 52, it makes sense to consider of the hundreds whose names are known, many are silently suffering.

Remember the years and years SBC officials called
@ChristaBrown777
a slanderer… for being honest about her abuse, a litany of other abuse she documented, and demanding reform?
Wow. I just finished an interview for
@NotSeenRadio
.
@DaultRadio
is an absolute pro. He read Disobedient Women so deeply and his questions made me consider elements I hadn't before. I'm very excited for this one to air (and to find an excuse to chat with him again!).
I don't think she would call this morning's church conversation 'preaching,' but
@ChristaBrown777
earned some Amens from the congregation.
This was one of the most powerful moments I have witnessed while covering these stories. I will pull quotes from her talk soon.
@SpudzPasta
This is a very accurate description, except add confidence and a readiness to stick up for any kid getting picked on. She's a fun force of nature herself.
The Gospel Coalition, as many are noting, has platformed abusers and promoted theologies that enabled abuse. Now looking to be trusted with the response.
Remember when
@DefendTheSheep
(along with others) was sued by her former pastor for sharing her opinion of the church… and he lost?
And he then had to pay their legal fees.
