Per the NYT there’s a 135 percent increase in positive cases from the average 2 weeks ago in NYC. You’re not imagining that suddenly every friend group has a breakthrough case. It sucks but we know: get boosted, get tested, and then be real about your results w/ your network.
News to think about this Labor Day weekend: The strike by Kaiser mental health clinicians is now the longest mental health strike in U.S. history. This should be a bigger story than it is.
Some personal news… Friday was my last day at Inverse! I’m stepping down from my role as senior science editor and am excited to say I’ve decided to go freelance. The decision wasn’t easy: I’ve been with Inverse for six years and am so proud of what this team has accomplished.
Some professional news: I'm happy to say I'm now the Senior Science Editor at

People with cats, how has your life changed — for better or worse — since you have adopted the cat? (This is not for an article, this is because I want a cat.)
I've honestly tried to avoid this trial as much as possible but now it's time to look squarely at the ugliness of it and how passiveness (in part) allowed it to spiral. Essential reading here from

For people who have been studying the misinformation campaign around the Depp v Heard trial, this verdict is chilling. The success of Depp’s “redemption arc” narrative reveals a lot about our social media platforms and ourselves.
A thread of things I learned during Depp v Heard:
I'm looking to expand my Rolodex of science writers available to cover breaking news and studies. Rates are typically between $200-$300 per article. If this interests you, please shoot a DM with the topics you cover/links to clips.
Welp after 2 years of reporting on and avoiding it, I have Covid. My advice — that scratchy throat? That negative test? If you have the means, stay home for a day then test again. It's better to know for sure. I'm glad to be boosted & thankful to get to stay home and be cared for
Some personal news — delighted to say that I’m now the Mind & Body editor at

People aren't wearing masks b/c there is zero effort to enforce these policies. In practice, a mask is a request, not a requirement. So how are y'all going to fix this?
When I spoke with one clinician earlier this year, who is now leaving Kaiser, she said: “My community has been decimated. My colleagues are devastated. They can't work for a company who doesn't value them and who wants to harm their community by depriving them of what they need.”
Hi! I'm officially open to writing/editing assignments, as well as any other creative opportunities involving research and storytelling. If you're interested in working together, please check out my site and reach out!

I reported on the current state of women's health in the U.S. — spoiler, it's not great! I hope you read, that you feel angry, and you demand more.
Extremely proud and happy to announce we have unionized! We are committed to creating a more equitable and transparent workplace, and are looking forward to working with management to make that happen.
Perhaps you saw the news about the ancient wooden Roman dildo. But did you ask yourself...where are all the other ancient dildos?? I did and

let me write about it. Ultimately, archeology is better when it's rated R.
I’m typically hesistant to share something like this but, some days, the job is harder than others, and it’s just so nice to receive a message like this and lean on a considerate stranger
I can feel anxious about pitching something related to an idea that someone else mentioned once, almost, that one time — and then I remember there are two Pinocchio movies coming out in 2022
Eldest daughters, project leaders extraordinaire, have kickstarted an important conversation about family roles, responsibilities, and assumptions. I reported on why they’re onto something:
I struggle with needing to log off and guilty for doing so. It can make you feel awful, but isn't it better to know? To witness?
But you also can't help if you're in emotional paralysis.
Here's me on how to navigate this time of cascading trauma:
in a year transformed by vaccines and sustained by hospital workers/first responders it’s hard to see the M*sk “person of the year” thing as anything more than a SEO play

The pandemic has exacerbated inequities known to drive and sustain poor mental health among the most vulnerable. It is beyond time to rethink what care should look like. Here is how we can move forward — I’m excited to share my first article for

Inverse is looking for its next health science reporter. You'd be working with yours truly, writing a mixture of enterprise articles, study coverage, & features + covering a buffet of topics: mental health, relationships, nutrition, genetics, Covid-19, etc
@KateClancy
Meanwhile, people are told to "trust the science," but the science doesn't always include them. It seems that we don't have a chance of combatting misinformation if institutional science/medicine doesn't change how it views/treats the people it is trying to serve.
Feels cringe to share a compliment but a Viking researcher emailed to say this is "the best popular written piece I have read about the Viking Age ever" and after putting in the work to make this as fun and fair as possible that felt pretty great!!

Here's my latest, on the relationship between mental health and the immune system, and the quest to find a therapeutic for treatment-resistant depression:
I think I've fully pivoted from a "nothing matters" person to an "everything matters" person. On the downside, this makes me way less cool. But on the downside, I'm incredibly anxious.
We’re thrilled to announce the voluntary recognition of the BDG Union by Bustle Digital Group! This is a huge step forward to a more stable, equitable, and inclusive workplace.

The good people of Reddit/science voted a post with an article of mine the third "most significant submission" of 2019. The study I covered is tragic, and I'm glad it spurred conversation. You can read it, and the full list here:
Boosted, baby! If you’re in NYC you should get your booster now. Nurses are working 12hr shifts to make it as easy as possible to get everyone vaccinated. When asked how many shots she had given that day, one nurse couldn’t name a number and said “....beyond”

Every time I write an article on a conspiracy theory study, or one of those articles get reposted, I get inundated with messages from conspiracy theorists. They are often creepy/mean but there is something particularly LOL about using LinkedIn to share the word.
It's my turn to experience the heartbreak of the climate crisis. Watching friends and family evacuate, homes & beloved refuges in danger or already gone, is excruciating. It's beyond time for radical change.

The Inverse team continues to expand: We now have an opening for a remote, part-time Mind & Body staff writer. This is a great opportunity for an early-career science writer who's stoked on our flavor of health journalism:
