It's been said many times but it's *amazing* that just a few years ago, the idea that much/most work--especially at the low & middle segments of the pay scale--wd be automated in the near/medium-term future was being widely discussed as the BIG issue re: labor & society.

This is really breaking new ground - not just in terms of the "AI exemption" idea but also in terms of targeting landlords, who frequently engage in all kinds of under the radar price coordination.

1. As landlords turn to algorithms to set rents, they should be aware that price fixing through an algorithm is still price fixing. A brief by @FTC & Department of Justice makes clear that there is no AI exemption from the antitrust laws.

I was just wondering what it would it take to prompt a walkout of all the faculty who have essentially been providing an escape valve for months now, and how that would (or more likely would not) change the dynamics of this situation.

I would hope that Columbia Faculty see their admin arresting their own students for peaceful protest as a red line. These students are in our care. Our primary responsibility as academics is to nurture their minds and protect them from oppression. Faculty must walk out now.

@brianbeutler Merits aside ... your position is that putting concern for other humans (even if you think it misplaced) over individual career advancement *undermines* a person's credibility?

My review essay of Block & Harris's _Inequality & the Labor Market_ is out. Here I argue explicitly: the discussion around competition policy & labor needs to move beyond imperfect competition, to a thoroughly legal-institutionalist study of markets

a) I got the house I was hoping for in ann arbor, without even sacrificing my need to be present for the inspection including (duh) watching the entire sewer scope, AND they cut the price in the meanwhile; b) just in time for today's rate hike!!

It was quite profound at today's commencement to hear our honored guest, a sitting federal judge, call out @umich central administration's security theater in particular light of its arising in the context of "advocacy for Palestinian human rights," as a part of broader remarks

The last bullet point in this letter is key. Too many high university officials have been 'making or supporting vague public and private allegations and spurious claims against students' (and faculty) for 6 months now. That laid the groundwork for the current chapter.

@ettingermentum My (extremely obvious??) take on this whole discourse is: great, so on that principle (save civilian lives--good principle!!) do you support US subsidy of Iron Dome for Gaza? If not, why not???

OK I have to briefly post on this platform to make an observation: 'Freedom of contract' and 'more competition' have *always* been in latent tension with one another! This is in fact the basic tension at the heart of "free markets" as a putatively unitary ideal.

Just note that the actual "Uncommitted" vote is going to *greatly* undercount the actual margin Biden needs to worry about for Nov--disaffection predates this short, shoestring campaign. Many, many more who would've otherwise voted Biden are going to stay home, do a write-in, etc

It's just about #LeavetheLeaves season! A couple of inches of leaf cover is habitat that invertebrates and pollinators (including native bees) who are in turn essential to healthy ecosystems rely upon.

I understand the impulse to find a unified framework for why things are bad but I humbly submit it's important to come up with unified frameworks for making things better--which definitely includes critical analysis of the *actual ideas & arguments* that keep bad things in place

Levin clearly endorsing the Uncommitted vote in the MI primary; asking Ferndale and other cities to pass ceasefire resolution; and stating that Biden sending people to Michigan is irrelevant: we need a change in POLICY, not messaging ... Biden must act to "end the carnage"!

Should we "commit at least 90% of incoming slots at law schools and universities to [graduates of] public schools–to match the proportion of them in the country, and to reverse the massive bias toward wealthy prep school[s] at elite colleges today?"

Never been clearer that law schools need to figure out how to loosen themselves from the political economy of white-shoe law firms. This includes seeking *public* support for both education and entry-level legal jobs (think about all the unmet demand for lawyers) .

No! There are urgent social goals (not "industry demands") that we indeed need to meet through technical means. Every student--*every one*, not just the fortunate ones--deserves to study deeply about this world & why it's worth fighting for. And then to help shape those "demands"

Working for a labor union is public service. It doesn't make sense for student loan repayment programs that apply to (other) nonprofits and public employment not to apply to labor jobs.
