Are you looking for a narrative podcast host with years of experience writing and telling science stories?
Do you want a voice over artist who understands the scientific words they're saying?
I'd love to work with you!
Anyone who had their second Pfizer jab and DIDN'T get any side effects, please make yourselves known.
I'm trying to convince my brain that I won't react to it at all.
PhD students suffer from anxiety and depression at rates that far exceed the general population. How about rather than looking for ways students can treat themselves, we look at the structural reasons why academia is destroying the mental health of so many PhD students?

at rates that far exceed the general population. A recent study suggests that mindfulness interventions—a form of exercise for the brain—may help.

Sexuality is different from most other minorities: you can be the only gay person in your entire family. Your parents likely don't know what it's like to be gay, can't teach you about gay history and gay issues first hand. That's why it's so important to teach it in schools.
This is your reminder that

Ideas worth spreading are apparently not ideas worth paying for.
Big gulp! The Nautilus team spotted a gulper eel doing just that in
@HawaiiReef
. That pouch-like mouth can inflate in an instant, scooping up much larger prey like a pelican! This gulper was likely a juvenile, as they can grow up to three feet in length.

For those outside the YouTube bubble, this is the equivalent of Harvey Weinstein writing a book in 4 years time about what it's like losing your job in Hollywood because you're a sexual predator. And people buying it.
tw// There's a YouTuber who has just written a book about being vilified on the internet because he was accused by thirteen women of sexual misconduct. He is currently trying to climb the Amazon charts because he has no shame. Please don't support him, tag him, etc. thanks
Dear Santa, for Christmas I would like a film:
▪️About a lesbian couple
▪️Where neither is cheating on a boyfriend/husband
▪️Neither of them dies
▪️They get a happy relationship
IS THIS TOO MUCH TO ASK???
Dude, I'm a biologist with a published paper on sex and a lifetime passion for frogs in particular. Why did you feel the need to tell me this?

Male and female frogs get into a mating posture called amplexus. The male climbs onto the female's back and clasps his forelegs around her middle. Frogs can stay in amplexus for hours or even days as the female releases as few as one or as many as several hundred eggs.

Straight women saying 'girlfriends' when they mean 'female friends'. What am I supposed to call a girlfriend if you keep hijacking the term???
Being a tiny part of

I remember being exhausted after press interviews for GE at SXSW and the panel host

asking if I'd do one more interview for his podcast.
I'm so glad I said yes.
Reading through my timeline, it's abundantly clear that Stephen Hawking was as much a cultural icon as a scientific one. His forays into pop culture made people care about his research, even if they didn't understand it. If I can do just a little bit of that, I'll have done well.
Alcohol hand gel (aka hand sanitizer) definitely kills viruses such as SARS CoV 2.
Soap is better, but hand gel is good.

I am a highly trained scientist with years of experience in data visualisation AND still I find log scales incredibly difficult to interpret.
How on Earth can we expect the general public to get the correct message from this at a glance???
STOP USING LOG SCALES.
If only there was a low cost way to keep our cities cool in summer that was also carbon negative, improves human health and wellbeing and benefits biodiversity...

They release of water vapour, in the process of evapotranspiration
They also provide cooling through the provision of shade & reflection of solar radiation & storing less energy than artificial surfaces e.g. asphalt

Female science YouTubers receive over 2x more critiques and negative comments, over 3x more comments on appearance and over 10x more sexual and sexist comments compared to male science YouTubers
#InternationalWomensDay
It's just so bloody tiring. The constant drip drip of people telling you you're too fat, dressed wrong, fuckable, not fuckable...
And then you wonder why more women don't teach science on YouTube, or why women have more mental health problems.
I'm sadistically enjoying watching all the TV shows that are trying (and failing) to make high quality programmes from home isolation even with an entire team of highly trained professionals and huge budgets.
Meanwhile YouTubers have been doing this self-taught for years.
You know, like paying a living wage (or even minimum wage), giving employee's rights e.g. maternity and sick leave, penalising abusive supervisors more harshly and consistently, changing the culture from tearing down ideas.
Or just ask them to think about their breathing.
YouTube: "We have the best prediction algorithm in the world! We know what videos you want to watch more than you do!"
Also YouTube: "Now you've finished episode 21, would you like to watch episode 23 next?"
Dear companies,
Please know that we science YouTubers talk to each other about our sponsored video rates to make sure we are all getting a fair deal. Don't try to get us to cut our prices because "another YouTuber is offering it for less".
Sincerely

Reading about the possibility of raising the UK minimum wage to £15/hour.
This is your reminder that this doesn't just affect shop workers and baristas.
My job requires a minimum of a science degree. I produced a 1h BBC science radio documentary earning £10.91/hour.
A trend I have noticed is calling male animals FANTASTIC fathers for... any parental care.
Sure, male seahorses keep the young inside of them until they're big enough to survive. But you know what else does that? EVERY FEMALE PLACENTAL MAMMAL. And we don't call them fantastic.
Looks like everyone, students included, will be able to continue learning science with live classes this summer. Mark's covering physics and I'll be covering biology (probably at a slightly higher level)
BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!!! My dream job has always been to be a High School Physics teacher so here we go! Come to learn and have fun. I’ll be explaining science topics in simple terms with demos. First live stream lesson topic is “Sound” this Monday at 1pm PT on YouTube.
In conclusion what do each of these graphs make you think about the pandemic?
Data visualisation is so important, particularly at a time of global crisis. People making graphs can choose what message they want to tell you.
It's a responsibility they should not take so lightly.
Wow, that hit a nerve! Follow up point:
Non-profit does not mean everyone is unpaid. TED had $66 million revenue in 2015. TED employs staff and pays them salaries. They will pay for venues and production costs.
Just not its speakers.
OK wow that's a lot of people!
Thank you - I've heard so many people getting nasty side effects that even though I NEVER react badly to vaccines, I was worried the expectation might cause a placebo.
And as I'm presenting a live radio show the next day, I kinda need to be well.
We hear so much about how bad the USA (and Brazil) have had it.
"Quarter of a million deaths!"
"25% of all global cases!"
But the USA is huge.
Per capita, the UK has seen more deaths from Covid than the USA has *at every point in the pandemic*. WHY DO BRITS NOT KNOW THIS???
According to the commentators, this is the first time England have made an international final in 50+ years — since 1966.
According to Wikipedia, England reached the final in the UEFA Women's Championship in 1984 and 2009.
Good morning! Today is the first day of my life as a full-time science YouTuber. Even though my "office" is only 2 steps away, it's still rather daunting. Wish me luck!
It would be a terrible shame if more users on Twitter became aware of Sci-Hub, a website that allows you to access peer reviewed science papers for free that are otherwise hidden behind publishers' paywalls.
So terrible.
IMHO, for comparing countries, it should be shown as deaths per capita on a linear scale.
That way we are comparing like for like in a way our brains can easily process.
Any deviation from this should be only for a very specific purpose and must be clearly explained.
Right then, if we could now see the same level of organisation, funding and dedication put into to solving climate change, the energy/housing crises and the general state of the UK that would be great pls thnx
New goal: earn millions as a celebrity biologist, then buy up swathes of degraded farmland in the UK and plant/rewild it for nature, using ecotourism to make it self-sustaining. Who's in?
Very excited because today is my first day at...MY NEW JOB!!!
I'm going to be working for
@NakedScientists
producing a weekly science radio show for the BBC!!!
First, let's scrap the log scale and have a normal linear scale instead.
Instantly we see how bad the USA and Brazil are compared to places like Russia and the UK. Australia and the Philippines barely even register any more.
When I say I want a cat, what I'm really saying is I want a stable career in which I earn enough money to get a mortgage on a decent sized house and still have disposable income for pet expenses like vet bills and cat sitters.
I want a cat.
One friend had to weigh up taking sick leave against being able to afford rent as time off isn't paid.
One friend had a supervisor who would yell at their students
One friend had a neglectful supervisor who would be uncontactable and now has to cram before their UK visa expires
Female science YouTubers get more comments on appearance and more negative/critical comments than male science YouTubers, and that's only accounting for comments AFTER the blocking/spam process.
None of us are surprised.
"Female hosted [STEM] channels were found to accumulate... significantly higher proportions of appearance, hostile, critical/negative and sexist/sexual commentary." 😪
It's really not surprising, but there's an new interesting paper out re: YouTube hosts:
Hospital appointments should not be cancelled just because one woman has died.
Funerals should not be cancelled just because one woman has died.
People should not be arrested for criticising the monarchy just because one woman has died.
This isn't mourning, this is fascism.
I've just had the most lovely weekend being a bridesmaid for my childhood best friend.
The best bit was hanging out with her 2 year old daughter and m̶a̶n̶i̶p̶u̶l̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ encouraging her to become a biologist!
Male frogs and toads have a thing called amplexus which is a reflex to grip on to anything remotely female shaped at this time of year. Which leads to situations like this...
Today, I had a cafe worker tell me "you don't have to wear a mask anymore", the implication being that I would whip it off in relief and thank him profusely.
No mate. I'm wearing it because I don't want to get sick, not because of what some politician has decided.

I just got rejected from a job I had really set my heart on and I am totally and utterly crushed.
If I can't even get a part time job making online videos about scientific research from a certain prestigious university then what the fuck other jobs am I going to get?
I give up.
Dear science TV,
Saying "man" or "mankind" instead of "humans", "people" or "humanity" doesn't make you sound authoritative or add gravitas.
It makes you sound like you don't give a **** about 51% of the population.
Disgruntled,
Sally.
