On fossil fuels and literary festivals.
Ignore the people sneering at campaigners trying to kick fossil fuels out of culture. It's the climate activists who dare to dream of art for its own sake.

🥳UKIP have lost ALL of their six remaining councillors.
This means UKIP has been *completely* wiped out as an electoral force.
As of today, there isn’t a single UKIP politician elected anywhere in the country.
🔵Reform won four seats.
🟢The Greens won four seats.
This graphic shows the four Reform seats. The four Green seats are lumped in with ‘other’.
It has begun. There will be more. Call it out when you see it.
Give the Greens the platform they have earned.

These children have barricaded themselves against diggers sent to rip out the pedestrianisation outside their school.
It’s right to reduce traffic outside schools. It’s safer, healthier and better for the planet.
These kids know it. They’re heroes.
We opened a Fixing Factory today! An actual shop on an actual high street!
People can bring their broken stuff and get it fixed for free. This will reduce waste, cut carbon, and help with the cost of living crisis in the local community.
Want to hear a simple idea to tackle climate change?
Give workers extra time off to go on holiday by train rather than plane.
This would cut the carbon of a trip from the UK to Paris by 90%. Any organisation could introduce this overnight.
when the headline says ‘car’ it slightly downplays the sheer, inherent danger of a vehicle the size of a land rover.
these death traps need banning from our cities.
Just heard

say he isn’t in favour of onshore wind because he thinks wind farms are an “eyesore”
Anyone else think that wind turbines are quite beautiful?
I know all the caveats here, the Tories have adopted a lot of their stuff wholesale etc. but a) it is nonetheless great to see that taking the most reactionary possible position on everything sent them into oblivion b) come on, embrace joy for once!! just enjoy it! UKIP is dead!

hello 👋 I'm head of comms for a climate charity.

official government advice is that you can leave your house for exercise, as long as alone or with members of your household. why are you shaming people for walking their dog? genuine question. am i missing something?
UPDATE⚠️
Someone corrected me and pointed out that UKIP actually had SEVEN cllrs going into todays election. Not sure where/when they went up from six to seven but there you go.
Anyway, they just lost their seat too 🥳
every time you see Reform discussed on tv, remember that it’s all just one man pumping money into a rogue rightwing project. and when you much more rarely see a Green on tv, that’s the result of half a century of hard graft, grassroots support, & actual electoral success.

huge credit to the many locals and campaigners who kept pushing to make this happen.
no new coal. not in merthyr. not anywhere.
this misses the point of artwash/divestment movements entirely. the point is not that art must be politicised. it is that the funders of genocide & climate change must be delegitimated.

If a critical mass of people get used to working shorter hours for full pay (and see that the sky doesn’t fall in when we work a little less) people won’t stand for going back to the five day grindstone for their bosses.
A four day week is on the way.
@GeorgeMonbiot
are you going to collate these into a book? I think you should, would really help us make sense of the scale and scope of all this, when we are being battered by it in fragments during a time of national trauma
Sorry to see Lynne Jones join the Greens but wish her all the best. I’ve noticed that quite a few people who joined Labour under Jeremy Corbyn have left us again to join the Green Party. It will be interesting to see how it shapes Green Party policies and priorities in the
oh and also for everyone pointing out (with some justification) that UKIP remodelled the contemporary Tory party…
The Tory vote is in absolute free fall too 🥳
There's no better way to celebrate than watching their then interim leader Pat Mountain being interviewed by Adam Bolton ahead of the 2019 general election.
Surely one of the most inept interviews ever broadcast.

today I was effectively forced to vote for a candidate I didn't really want to vote for, so it's a good opportunity to give a shout out to

who do excellent work on making our voting system simpler and fairer.
Starmer blames bad polling on the success of the vaccine roll out.
That doesn't explain why the Greens (who have not rolled out the vaccine) are up by +23 among 18 - 24 year olds (who are almost entirely unvaccinated).
It's because Greens offer a real vision for the future.

yeh man, totally agree. I have always thought the thin justification is that no sitting NI parties stand in any other nation but I fully agree it’s not fair or good
just spent a couple hours walking my 3mo daughter around outside, and genuinely got a little bit emotional that tomorrow we’ll wake up with the protection of ULEZ, making the air that much cleaner in the years that really matter for her
The highly misleading opening credits of Postman Pat portray Pat with a range of skills and competencies largely absent from the show itself, in which he actually delivers just one parcel per day in the most shambolic and counterintuitive manner imaginable.

Let’s be clear about what’s going on here.
For decades, the tobacco lobby fought tooth and nail to discredit the growing mountain of evidence linking smoking to lung cancer.
Now we’re seeing the same thing with cars, air pollution, and public health.
If you're keeping score, this government has made Nadine Dorries sound reasonable, made Esther McVey sound leftwing, and made Shell sound like campaigners for wealth redistribution.
I’m no fancy political strategist, but maybe next time the Conservatives should consider putting forward a candidate to be Mayor of London who is not the worst person they could possibly find in the entire country.
it is genuinely remarkable that Labour have taken their best by-election result *ever* alongside their best result in Uxbridge since 1970, and used it to batter the most successful Labour politician in the country
@FisherAndrew79
As a former comms staffer for the Greens, I also feel compelled to point out that we were/are very happy to tell people about these policies, contrary to the claim on the leaflet.

The overwhelming majority of cars driven in London are ULEZ compliant.
When we expand ULEZ, it will affect a very small number of people, but it will benefit absolutely everybody.

The internal logic of this quote also makes absolutely no sense as it was Starmer who *stayed* rather than ‘taking advantage’ of his ‘freedom’ to campaign away from duties attendant upon a PM, and Sunak who went back to routine campaign activity and *didn’t* do his PM duties.
Arguably one of the most important UK political careers of the century so far.

this song is structurally critical to the whole movie, and restoring it makes the Muppets Christmas Carol the absolutely definitive adaptation of the novel.
there's a particular thing that I like about this song that makes it so important to the film imo 🧵
Important:
From today, The Muppet Christmas Carol on

Ten days ago, Thérèse Coffey's own department published figures saying the UK is off track on meeting its own legally binding carbon targets.
She says she hasn't read it, and her officials haven't briefed her.
£250m is the cost to reopen it for *motor vehicles*
they could reopen it for cyclists and pedestrians very quickly for much less money.
and if they had real vision, they could create a permanent car-free crossing for the capital:
The cost to repair Hammersmith Bridge has soared to £250 million - raising fears that it will never reopen

Find out why one of the oldest suspension bridges in the world faces an "embarrassing" fate:
We were shown what the authors produced ahead of being on the show, and it was barely a side of A4.
