The Prime Minister defended Dominic Cummings' trip to Barnard Castle saying he “followed the instincts of every parent” and behaved “reasonably and legally”
Now he brands refugees who try to save their children by seeking asylum “dangerous and criminal”.
One rule for them.
Bailouts:
- Ryanair and Easyjet £600m each
- BA and Wizz £300m
- Nissan £600m
- Toyota £365m
- Rolls Royce £300m
- Children who won’t have enough to eat over the summer holidays £0m
Tells you everything you need to know about this Government.
1000 arrests, school strikes, Attenborough highlights the emergency, Greta Thunberg in Parliament, the Bank of England governor says huge financial change needed. And what does the Govt do? Support a state visit for a climate change denier. We must ramp up the pressure.
Surely one of the most obscene front pages so far this year: A privileged millionaire brandishing a petition calling for money to be taken away from the world’s poorest.
Dear
@BBCr4today
you won’t have
@TheGreenParty
on during our party conference even though some polls have us in 3rd and what we’ve said about Coronavirus since April has been proved right.
But you invite the chair of Weatherspoon’s on to spout his opinion on a circuit-breaker?
If you are more outraged by the toppling of a statue of someone responsible for the transportation of 84,000 enslaved African men, women and young children, of whom 19,000 died on voyages - than the fact the statue was there in the first place - you have a serious problem.
Very disappointing to hear Keir Starmer say Labour is not backing a Universal Basic Income. Now is precisely the time when it would come into its own.
#Marr
Someone who turns their back on refugees, sets out to create a hostile environment for migrants & presides over a country with 128,000 homeless children is in no place to lecture anyone about “Christian heritage”
“We must do everything in our power to avoid a second peak of infection” the prime minister says, immediately after saying he will announce more measures to lift lockdown.
Completely meaningless rhetoric evident to everyone except the Prime Minister himself.
#DailyBriefing
Huge well done to
@RNLI
for standing up to the vile rhetoric from both Nigel Farage and the Government on migrants' rights.
You should be incredibly proud of the essential humanitarian work you do, saving people's lives everyday and bringing them home safe.
Thank you 💚
We're proud of the lifesaving work our volunteers do in the Channel – we make no apology for it. Those we rescue are vulnerable people in danger & distress. Each of them is someone’s father, mother, son or daughter - every life is precious. This is why we launch:
I have written to the Cabinet Secretary asking why yesterday's press conference was permitted and for an investigation into the alteration of Dominic Cummings blog to add reference to Coronavirus - both of which appear to breach the special advisers code of conduct.
Hundreds of thousands of young people, including my children, had their education and lives repeatedly turned upside down again and again after dutifully and responsibly isolating. And now this. Anger doesn’t begin to cover it.
Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak were contacted by NHS Test and Trace as contacts of Sajid Javid
Downing Street said the pair would take part in a pilot programme, where daily tests replace self-isolation
Speaking truth to power is a cornerstone of democracy. Desperately sad that so much of the broadcast media won’t do it. But thank goodness there are a few politicians who will!

It’s v clear where this Govt’s priorities lie.
If there is to be another lockdown we must have vital support in place (like a Universal Basic Income) an evictions & sanctions ban, and it must be used to get on top of the virus with a fully resourced, effective, locally & publicly run Find Test Trace Isolate Support structure
Missing the climate debate isn't just a clear show contempt for the next generation, it's a clear sign that Boris Johnson is unfit for office. This is the greatest crisis we face. Chickening out of these debates is a disgrace.

£100m spent on Government propaganda. What this could have paid for in education:

- 10 million books

I have written to the Permanent Secretary about the Home Office video which makes a highly politicised
attack on lawyers acting for people threatened with removal from the UK. This video should be withdrawn. There should be an investigation into how it was created and published.
It wasn’t simply that Cummings was in lockdown, he was in quarantine after displaying symptoms.
If he doesn’t go voluntarily, the Prime Minister must sack him.
The first duty of Govt is to protect. But the Prime Minister is stating here he will remove mitigation measures - that could easily continue - in the full knowledge it will result in deaths. Let’s be clear. This is not just negligent or reckless. It is a choice to let people die.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson says "there could be 50,000 cases detected per day by July 19" and that "we must reconcile ourselves to more deaths from COVID".

Northern Ireland is tracing 98% of close contacts.
Wales is hitting 90%.
In England we’re barely scraping 50%.

But it is as unacceptable now as it would have been at any other time. This must not become the new normal.

You can’t have your cake and eat it. Declaring a climate emergency is about making the right choices: no new road building, or new coal mines, HS2, airport expansion and fossil fuel subsidies - and investing instead in the radical transition we need to a low carbon economy.
We all want to get rid of this Government but a general election where both the biggest parties support some kind of Brexit and neither supports giving the people a say, won't heal the very real divisions Brexit has caused.
What the Prime Minister announced today is nothing like a ‘new deal’ and certainly not Green.
He used our branding on his podium. He used our language in his speech. But it was greenwash.
President Macron has announced that gas, electricity, water bills and rents are to be suspended in France.
The UK Government should be looking to ensure that everyone’s basic needs are met in this country.
While 'green' number plates dominate we have learned in 24 hours:
❌ Govt has rejected including aviation & shipping emissions under Climate Change Act
❌ £1bn meant for Green energy is earmarked for fracking
❌ Britain now G7's biggest net importer of CO2 emissions per capita

We know how devastating the affects of air pollution are. We should be investing in the solutions.
Good grief. At what point will they realise that outsourcing is the problem? Resource local authorities and public health teams to carry out test and trace!
Good grief. The Environment Secretary's speech:
1. Climate change is devastating
2. We can still frack, expand airports and build roads.
4. But he'll help us adapt.
He should be declaring a climate emergency & charting a course out of this crisis!
Note to UK media. Will you now please stop labelling those who are fleeing persecution and danger, and looking for the UK to provide safety, “migrants”. They are refugees.👇
Migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats are overwhelmingly genuine refugees, senior Home Office officials have confirmed.

Blaming white poppies for the lack of funding for veterans is like blaming peacemakers for the under-resourcing of the Red Cross. Governments should meet their obligations to support those they send to war. Veterans should not have to rely on charity.

Labour’s position on a wealth tax is now that it would rather we “grow our way out of this crisis”.

Wealth redistribution is an alternative to endlessly pursuing growth, and gives us a way to address both the economic crisis and the climate crisis.

We already have the highest incarceration rate in Western Europe. More prison places is not a solution. We should be looking to halve the prison population not increase it.
The Government is clearly easing lockdown without the necessary assurance it has the pandemic under control.
Is any other party leader saying this?
If not, they should. This is not a time to stay silent.
Almost half of the electorate were ignored at December’s general election due to a “morally and politically bankrupt” voting system. The country has never had a say in moving to a modern, fair electoral system where seats match votes. Time for change.
A quick summary of the last couple of hours in terms of Green gains: Our first ever seat in Hastings, first ever seat in Derbyshire, gained SIX (so far) in Suffolk, one in Worcestershire and one in Braintree.
Still a long way to go but Greens are clearly on the rise.
If a result still stands even when campaigns break the law what is the point in having election laws? There are no two ways about it - this calls into question the legitimacy of the referendum result.
