I find that poker players often don’t grasp this statement. Chess players are so bounded by our ability to calculate that 1/10th into the “true” decision tree we just go off vibes (intuition). Poker players apply game theory and probability (ranges) in these spots. 1/7

It's awesome that 2 Dutch players are finishing first this year in Wijk. But honestly horrible rules if Alireza can't play in the tiebreak in case he wins his last game. All these other points ( Sonnenborn-Berger etc) are pretty meaningless in a round-robin. #TataSteelChess

First Saturday type tournaments is where IMs go when they’ve given up on getting their norms the normal way. The groups Abhimanyu played in are (notoriously) tailored for easy norms. All criticism about these events is fair & it would make sense to adjust rules a bit bcs... 1/2

FWIW, they are both great games, but poker puts you into the mindset to exploit an edge, whereas chess doesn't. This mindset translates well to trading, sports betting, etc. The learning curve to go into these areas is bigger for chess players. 7/7

This helps to narrow decisions down. In chess you calculate or use intuition. Calculating 1-2 moves deeper than your opponent consistently is an edge, but if there’s increasing variance in your ability to correctly evaluate the position x moves out…. things get messy. 2/7

Then, there's your short term memory for engine-assisted analysis. Sometimes you get a chance to play an opening variation where you remember everything and your opponent gets confused. The same game would've gone a different way if it had occurred 2 months later. 5/7

There is no easy way to mitigate this, sometimes you have to calculate deep & accept the diminishing ability to evaluate things correctly. No time to probability-weigh the correctness of your calculations, you're just trying to cover enough ground to make a decision. 4/7

@GMjtis I think g6 Qg4 Kh8 was missed. Maybe he even saw the move but figured it's bad since there is Bxg6 Rg8 Qf3! (ie he missed Qg7 missed, which is -/+) Instead, bxa4 Bxh7+ looks too scary, so he figured out he can go c3 first. The thought process makes sense to me

@bp22 In all seriousness, let's say a low 2700 player's time is worth $200 an hour. Odds of beating it are like 0.001% in classical. Shorter time controls are significantly more hopeless. 100k + jet is way too little considering the time investment
