Dear chess community, please stop using your phones in the playing hall. I don't care what is written on your damn badge.. checking the games with an engine while standing 2 meters away from the players is not cool.
The FIDE Grand Swiss in Isle of Man has been my personal favorite so far. I was involved with the video broadcast and the produced video content for the tournament and we've made some great material and innovations, which I will highlight below 👇🧵
It's funny to work on a chess broadcast with people who are new to chess. In yesterday's game Nepo played Queen d1 takes the Queen on d8. My colleague is glued to the screen for 15 seconds, stands up and announces to everybody: "the game is over. He took the king!"
#CarlsenNepo
Huge shoutout to all players, sponsors and organizers at Gameplan who made this
@tschessindia
event possible. This group photo is for (and with!) all the amazing fans in Kolkata ♥️
All my photos of the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid & Blitz:
After an amazing performance in the Lindores Abbey Blitz last week, Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi (2627) wins the

Rapid tournament with 6.5/9.

The
@tatasteelchess
tournament has a special place in my heart. My parents brought me to Wijk aan Zee as a baby, I've observed Kasparov as a 10-year-old kid, played as an amateur and now I'm happy to serve as the Jack of all trades 😅
All photos:
Here is a list of the opponents of
@lachesisq
and
@ChessMishra
for their respective GM norms. Nepomniachtchi made his norms in Wijk aan Zee C (2006), European Championships (2006) and World Youth Stars (2007). Mishra made his norms in GM-norm tournaments in Budapest.
We introduced a completely new camera angle: through the pieces, right into the face of the players. It feels magical so see the player's eyes, emotions and thought process in such an intimate way. I wish I could take photos from that angle :)
Back in Kolkata 🇮🇳 for

Rapid and Blitz. The first chess tournament of its kind with an equal prize fund for the men's and women's tournament.

The

tournament is one of the few events where I am involved with with the production of different type of content: livestream with
@chesscom
, video portraits with
@freshmenmedia
and I also took some photos in my spare time. A thread full of chess content 👇
The legend is back at the board!
@Kasparov63
will play a Chess960 match against the person who beat him in his last professional chess game: Veselin Topalov (Linares 2005).

Honored to win the award for best photographer in the photo contest of the Russian Chess Federation! My thanks goes to anyone who supported me in crucial parts of my chess career, including Kees Schrijvers/schaaksite.nl,
@STLChessClub
and Kathy Martinez.
We believe that all members of the chess community should have a voice in how we handle cheating in the game we all love.
Take our fair play survey and share your thoughts with us! ⬇️
Such a privilege to work as the
#GrandChessTour
photographer & DGT operator again this year. The first leg in Abidjan 🇨🇮 starts on Wednesday. And today we visited a local chess school.

It was a pleasure to work with the fantastic
@thelittlehat
and
@DavidHowellGM
, who give each other so much space and confidence to excel at the commentary booth. One of my favorite bits of the show was the moment leading to Bxh6 by Hikaru.
.
@MagnusCarlsen
's first round opponent Adam Tukhaev told the World Champion before the game that he has mixed feelings about this pairing as he has picked Magnus for his
@Chessdraft
team.
Croatian chess fans are amazing! They stay in the playing hall for hours: observing the players, staring at the position on the screens and quietly discussing the game with their neighbors. Awarding the players with a big applause after the end of the last game.

The four semi finalist of the Grand Prix in Belgrade. Who do you expect to win?
I visited Belgrade for round 5 and 6 because of the colorful playing hall 🌈

I personally love to see how nervous the players become during the game. Something that's so hard to see online is that Magnus' hands were shaking at the end of the game vs Mamedyarov.
Chess is a game with a scientific approach, but in the end it's a human battle over the board.
We streamed the top-11 games as individual streams on Youtube. The streams showed three camera angles, live board and audio from the playing hall. The videos are listed private on FIDE's channel, but you can find all links at
I've been producing broadcasts since 2014, but for the first time I feel we're doing something special. Together with my colleague Menno Pals we are developing tools to make chess broadcast easier to produce and more fun to watch. Thanks to
@FIDE_chess
for trusting us.
It was fun to catch up with Sagar

Throwback to the 2013 Tal Memorial. I traveled by myself, on my own expenses and stayed in a hostel near the playing hall in the center of Moscow. It's one of the first
#chess
events where I played around with a camera. Gelfand won the tournament.

Tomorrow is the opening of the exhibition "Chess art and the art of chess" in
@033Fotostad
in Amersfoort, Netherlands. Happy to show my photos along the works of other chess artists. The exhibition runs till March 5 in the city where I grew up.
I've built a website about chess streams. Wanna help me out with content (selection of best online games, funny Twitch clips, articles)... please let me know :)
A lot of chess is happening on
@Twitch
these days, but the streaming site is not very accessible to new viewers. There is nothing like a TV guide that tells you where and when chess is going on. That gave
@LennartOotes
the idea to create
@pogchess
.
The job title: "Local Technical Arbiter at the European Hybrid Qualification for the FIDE World Cup".
The actual job: walking chess players to the bathroom.
#NorwayChess
started today with the blitz -
@Vachier_Lagrave
won with 7.5/9! Very excited to see the new tournament format in action tomorrow.

I'm so happy that the
#grandchesstour
created a playing hall that got the lighting right! The hotel ball room is very bright and has interesting colors. Somehow that is very rare for chess tournaments 😅

I am happy to have a front row seat in Astana for the
#NepoDing
match, which became a tense rollercoaster. And a lot of work.
I am the director of FIDE's live show and operate the DGT board. And in the evenings I work on the daily highlights videos:
We've generated head-to-head stats of all pairings in the tournament, which supports the narrative for the commentators, but could also be used for social media and the broadcast.
2 hours for the entire game: no increment, delay or extra time. In case of a draw: Armageddon.
I love how
#NorwayChess
tries to make round robin events more exciting!!
We have news for you! The Altibox Norway Chess 2019 tournament will be a thrilling one, with a new time control format and Armageddon! Read about it here and let us know what you think:

Same old story with the
@theworldchess
website: it's simply not updated after the opening ceremony. No news report, no photos, no video archive, still a discount offer for first 5000 subs, still an announcement that the match will start on Nov 9. No obvious link to the game.
Meanwhile in the Netherlands: Jorden and Lucas van Foreest shared first place of the 🇳🇱 Championships with 5/7. Playoff will decide who is the Dutch Champion and who is not even the strongest in the family.
